The Burden of Southern History
The Burden of Southern History C. Vann Woodward's The Burden of Southern History remains one of the essential history texts of our time. In it Woodward brilliantly addresses the interrelated themes of southern identity, southern distinctiveness, and the strains of irony that characterize much of the South's historical experience. First published in 1960, the book quickly became a touchstone for generations of students. This updated third edition contains a chapter, "Look Away, Look Away," in which Woodward finds a plethora of additional ironies in the South's experience. It also includes previously uncollected appreciations of Robert Penn Warren, to whom the book was originally dedicated, and William Faulkner. This edition also features a new foreword by historian William E. Leuchtenburg in which he recounts the events that led up to Woodward's writing The Burden of Southern History, and reflects on the book's--and Woodward's--place in the study of southern history. The Burden of Southern History is quintessential Woodward--wise, witty, ruminative, daring, and as alive in the twenty-first century as when it was written.

Open Question: I have a few questions about the National Guard. I am asking here because I know how pushy recruiters can be..?
First a little about me: I currently work full time (1st shift) at a local plant. While I'm not crazy about the job, it helps me do what I need to do. Unfortunately thats the problem as well, It helps with the bare minimums but I need to do more to get ahead. I have always wanted to join the military but the timing just never worked out in my favor. I also have wanted to go to college, but again the opportunity hasn't presented itself until now. I'm now burdened by some credit debt and am considering joing the National Guard as a "cure all" solution. The bonus could help me pay down my debt while the guard would allow me to continue working and attend college at the same time. (Btw, my work would sustitute loss pay while away on active with the guard). Ok now to move on.... I have looked at the Guard website and it states the following as some of the benefits of joining (My questions are in the parenthesis): -College First ? Up to $20K bonus + 2 yrs no deployment. ( Whish MOS's in the central Virginia area offer the highest bonuses {the $20k}?Can anyone qualify for this option{College first}?) -100% Tuition Assistance ? Up to 100% tuition/nearly $20K over 4 yrs. (Is this just reimbursement or do they pay it upfront? Also it states "Up to 100%", what would qualify for the full 100%) -Montgomery GI Bill ? Up to $329/mo + up to $350/mo ARNG Kicker. (Do guard members have to pay into this to recieve it? How soon after enlistment is one titled to recieve this? What do you have to do to get the kicker?) -Student Loan Repay up to $20K (I don't currently have any student loans...) -$20K for certain jobs or prior service. (Again, which jobs does this pertain to? Im not prior service) -Up to $20K Enlistment bonus (Is this the same as the above statement? they have i listed seperately) Any constuctive comments are welcome. Thanks for all your time and help. Oh, and i do understand that I need to have EVERYTHING put in the contract. Yes I would be doing this for my coutry as well. I am now 27 and not living with my parents. This has been a dream of mine for a long time and now it seems like it may be the best option. I'm just looking for more info... thanks (more...)

Voting Question: Can someone Please tell me why in this day and age THIS is allowed to happen?
Right as i have said in previous questions I DO NOT have any grudges against asylum seekers / refugees / imigrants etc!! Since being at uni i have my friends are mostly people who have only been in this country a few years. They openly admit that within a few weeks of arriving here, they were found places to live in, there parents (not all but some) claim benefits. There is no problem here.... But please answer me THIS!!!!!! There is a guy in our local community, he is friends with most people round here as he used to do a lot of charity work, and was often at the church. Just the sort of person that everyone knows. About 6 years ago his whole life went down hill. He lost his kids and wife, suffered depression lost his job, went bankrupt! Basically his whole life went on a slippery slope. He went to the council and asked for a place to stay. You would think being a local guy, who done a lot of charity work, helped the community, worked damn hard to make an honest living, paid his taxes, had once served our army, that they could help someone down on their luck. They told him it was very difficult to find a single man his own house, as families need it more. Being the sort of guy he is he said he understood this. For the next 3 years, he went in and out of hostels that the council found him, often being beaten up and thrown out my regulars. He tried to find new jobs and things, but due to his history couldnt. Everyone local helped in out, with food and money sometimes a place to stay but he would not be a burden to anyone, Including the council. So after four years he gave up trying and became homeless, he was fed up asking the council for help, only to be put in horrible hostels to be beaten. 3 days ago he was found dead of a park bench. Literally frozen to death from the cold weather! Why can this happen. The council are being investigated, however my gran works there and has said they are under strict instructions to house immigrants etc before the homeless, before single mums, before anyone British for that matter. How can this be fair? I dont think it unlucky! I think its a little more than unlucky! Everyone did help him as much as they could, but the real helpers should have been the council. 'ability to survive' you make it sound like its his fault. I dont think many people would survive in -6 temperatures, day in day out. And as for moving to a warmer climate, not many countries take random homeless people.....except us. (more...)

Voting Question: First job delima....?
Well I've put off getting a job until I was legally able to drive myself to and from the workplace so I wouldn't burden anyone of having to take me there everyday. So I'm about to turn 16 and REALLY do NOT want to work at fast food, so I was thinking more along the lines of stocking shelves or something at the local Walmart/Publix/Win-Dixie .. but I'm not sure yet. What do these jobs pay about? Minimum wage most likely. ($7.21/hr?) All I really need to make it a few $100 a week or so to pay for gas and have some left over for other things. Which one of the stores above would you suggest and what positions there if they are available? If not stocking shelves or something, which is what I'm looking into. (more...)

So many MORE than the busy metro of Cincinnati I left. There is not a day that goes by that I, who, would notice these things, neglected dogs, cats in fields, on busy roads & hiways, at Walmart p-lot, the library, church, EVERYWHERE! While returning home the other day I saw 5 kittens huddled (5-8 wks old) together in a field wet & starving....i took them to the local Animal Shelter & they REFUSED them!!!NO ROOM! after it took me 1 hr. to russel them to my car for they were starved & scared to death! There is a lady 1/2 mile from my house who is very unfortunate monetarily with 35 PLUS cats & dogs ALL STRAYS who i help when i can with leftover & un-liked food etc. She doesn?t know how to stop taking them in. NOT US! our LOVE saved them for now!I know there are many people things to worry about in our world today....but I mean it i see dogs on the streets, on the dangerous hiways, around dumpters, or dead, running, starving, cats missing a leg, missing an eye, 2-5 dogs cats in the parking lots of Walmart, the gas station,up to 2-6 EVERYDAY here in Live Oak, FLA & am just heart broken!!! I think sometimes i shouldn't go out for what I might SEE!! I carry around 1/2 bags of dog/ cat food a bowl & a pitcher of water ALWAYS & when I see a stray baby I get honked at, yelled at because i am feeding them & protecting them for just a moment on the side of the road!! I couldn't take them home, i would just end up like my neighbor w/ so many neglected babies to feed...and i can BARELY feed myself & my 8 STRAYS, I've acquired in the last 12 yrs on my SS income!!!! PLEASE pray that God Almighty helps us with this struggle. FEED your pets, keep them close & DO NOT LET them stray to worry ME & others who truly care!??? I feed mine bread soaked in chicken broth when i cant pay $20 plus dollars for their food almost every wk. I WOULD NEVER let them stray from me to become homeless !!!! BUT it seems SO MANY HAVE! I tried to ignore this...BUT I CAN"T... i wish i had a happy story to tell...but its not there!!! I have plans to start an "underprivileged pets" something to help those who need food for their babies but people look at me like I am crazy...but something has to be done....soon! We do without so much during these recent times. DESPERATELY robbing Peter to pay Paul to have enough worthless green paper to BUY MY BABIES CARE & FOOD! HELP HELP I am in constant prayer for the state of our world today...AND I pray & prayPrayPRAY prayHOPE believe have faith that our babies will somehow be saved, loved always & live in peace!!! before it is toooo late for them...and me! Much love & peace of mind to us all! Please hear our cry's. (more...)

Resolved Question: Should Christians Always Obey Their Government?
Hebrews 13:17, Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you. My Government is not my leader GOD IS So can I grow canabis in the garden now ? Also Does this Scripture mean: First Century Christians should have renounced Jesus and worshipped Caesar so as to please the Roman authorities? - Jesus should have just said, ?Oh well, I am not really your King. Go ahead and worship Caesar?? - Christians in the 1850s should have obeyed the Fugitive Slave Laws and sent runaway slaves back to their owners? - Rosa Parks should have obeyed the local segregation ordinances and given up her bus seat to that white man? - America should never have declared its independence from Britain? - Christians should not have defended Jews or otherwise resisted in Nazi Germany? - No one should have resisted or fled from numerous Communist regimes of the last century? - Christians in countries where Christians are persecuted should renounce Christ and just ?go along to get along? with their earthly masters? So can I grow canabis in the garden now ? (more...)

Resolved Question: What do U think of this latest study Illegal Immigration Costs Colorado Nearly $1.1 Billion Annually ?
WASHINGTON, Dec. 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A report prepared by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) finds that illegal immigration costs Colorado about $1.1 billion a year, or about $612 for every native-born household in the state. The report, The Costs of Illegal Immigration to Coloradans, looks at just three essential state provided services and programs: K-12 education, public health care, and incarceration from criminal illegal aliens. According the report, illegal aliens in Colorado pay about $160 million in taxes, reducing the net costs to the state to $912 million annually. However, since most of the jobs currently held by illegal aliens would likely be filled by legal workers, at higher wages, the taxes paid by illegal aliens would have been collected anyway. The release of The Costs of Illegal Immigration to Coloradans coincides with worsening fiscal news for the state. While the state spends more than $1 billion on services for illegal aliens, Colorado is faced with a $101 million budget shortfall for the current fiscal year. -- Education. K-12 education for the estimated 84,000 children of illegal aliens attending Colorado public schools costs taxpayers $925 million. It costs the state an additional $68 million a year to provide for the special educational needs of nonEnglish-speaking kids. -- Health care. Uncompensated health care for illegal aliens costs Colorado $78 million a year. -- Incarceration. In addition to the human and economic costs of crimes committed by criminal illegal aliens, incarcerating the perpetrators carries a $38 million annual price tag. "Even in the best of economic times, $1.1 billion would be an unnecessary and unjustifiable burden on Colorado taxpayers," said Dan Stein, president of FAIR. "With Colorado, like nearly every other state, forced to cut vital programs and services these costs are simply untenable." In recent years, Colorado has taken limited steps to enforce laws against illegal immigration, including having two police units trained to identify and detain suspected illegal aliens. Gov. Bill Ritter has also appointed a special panel to examine other options for local immigration enforcement. "The costs of illegal immigration in Colorado are ten times greater than the current fiscal shortfall," noted Stein. "Given the stark realities faced by the state, it is critical that Colorado take the necessary steps to reduce the $1.1 billion burden associated with illegal immigration." The full report, The Costs of Illegal Immigration to Coloradans, is available at www.fairus.org. http://news.yahoo.com/s/usnw/20081211/pl_usnw/illegal_immigration_costs_colorado_nearly1_1_billion_annually_finds_newly_released_study_from_fair (more...)

Resolved Question: Proofread / Subject Verb Agreement essay?
Anyone mind helping proofread my essay? And as an extra note, to perhaps look specifically for any subject-verb agreement errors (My teacher is cracking down on this and my eyes are horrible at finding these) The power of youth opens up numerous paths to the future. While you are young you can decide on many things that can shape your future. Not only those, but decisions made as a youth may positively effect other people in the long run. The power of youth does not only extend to decisions, but it also increases the capacity to learn. Compared to when you are older in life, your ability to learn is much higher, it all depends on your willingness. If a youth puts their mind to it, they can achieve nearly anything. In history there were youths that grew to be historically important. One such person would be King Tutankhamun who became a Pharaoh at the age of nine. Due to various reasons he became one of the most well-known Egyptian Pharaohs in modern culture. He was burdened with the incredible task of ruling an entire country. However, for 10 long years he endured it, and had to mature at that early age. Another such youth was Joan of Arc who led several victories against the English and became a national heroine of France. There are even youths that have still gained incredible things presently. While an elementary student was looking out the window as his mom drove, he noticed many homeless people on the streets. Watching them, he had an intense feeling of wanting to do something to help them. After some thought, he decided on making blankets for every homeless person. At first it was only a small local charity program, but soon enough it became a city-wide project. All the work he has put into this paid off as it had a positive impact on many homeless people that had been hit upon bad times. For his work he was given many scholarships and can practically go to any university he wants when he is old enough. Another young, accomplished youth in England got his piloting license at the age of 16! To have obtained a pilot license at that age is an amazing feat as many have said that it was too young to have a license. Over our long history, we have shown to do many remarkable things at our age. In the past and present we have done remarkable things that have surpassed others expectations. This power of our youth is so very overwhelming. It develops and enhances the minds of young children into young adults and serves as a powerful tool for society to raise its youth to serve our society. This process has been a never ending cycle since as long as anyone can remember. The children of today who grow into adults will continually prove that the youth are powerful in many ways. (more...)

Resolved Question: Are older people necessarily wiser when it comes to practical decisions?
I'm 22 and my husband is 25; I cannot believe how many times we've been told not to do certain things and/or have been judged by other adults (generally people over 30) without merit. Here's an example: My husband and I used to live in northern Delaware and we were going to a church just over the border in Elkton, MD at the time. My husband was getting ready to graduate from the University of Delaware with his computer science degree when word slipped out in the church that we were planning on moving to Huntsville, Alabama. A woman in her 50's we barely knew, confronted us at a church dinner insisting that it was absolutely a bad idea to move and that financially we would be much better off, living for some bizarre reason, in Maryland versus Delaware or any other state. Our plan had been in the works for the better part of a year and we had thus collected and evaluated STACKS of data on not only Huntsville but numerous other cities throughout the south. Based upon our ranked criteria (1. ratio of engineering jobs to population, 2. cost of housing, 3. overall tax burden, 4. population density, 5. average commute times and 6. distance to rural areas,), Huntsville won hands down. She refused to listen to me when I was able to show concrete evidence from several sources that refuted her claims that Maryland was the best place to live. Apparently she had allowed her daughter to screw up royally by getting into drugs and making several children whose fathers are still unknown. She claimed that she wanted to "save us" from a bad decision because she had allowed her daughter to be irresponsible. I don't think moving to a new city when you have marketable skills and a job waiting there is "irresponsible". I'll admit, I've made mistakes but seriously, if you can't get something major right the first time don't go into overkill and give unwanted and unwarranted advice. I encountered the same thing while I was taking a first time home buyer class at a local community center here in Huntsville. When I mentioned that my husband and I were specifically looking at houses that had been sitting on the market for awhile because of the potential for finding a good deal, an older woman spoke up and said that we were just asking for trouble. Apparently she had bought a home without getting a proper home inspection and ended up loosing it to foreclosure because she couldn't afford the major repairs that popped up. What bone head buys a house without having it inspected first anyway? Plus, this class had a very easy ("duh" type information, nothing serious) 60 question multiple choice test at the end; I got all of the questions right while the woman only got about half of them. That irked me further because she obviously didn't do her homework the first time she bought a house and couldn't even get the test right but felt the need to judge me for my well researched decision. My husband and I are very handy people and see repairs as an adventure to learn new skills. We actually just bought a house that had been on the market for almost 18 months (fully inspected by a licensed home inspector and found to be in good condition) at a considerable discount. Houses are a hit or miss game and its hard to spot the junkers from the jewels unless you really look. Time on the market doesn't necessarily flag a house as good or bad because there's a sucker born every day. This is all 10 months since the first example and it seems like I've proved those people and the others not mentioned wrong. I do take advice, only advice that I can prove is actually valid. Does older REALLY mean wiser? (more...)
