A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols This disc could be more succinctly titled Christmas for Anglophiles. Few sounds are more British than the boy soprano-dominated Choir of King's College in Cambridge. And the group is heard--in some sections recorded live--in an actual Christmastide service amid the generous reverberation of a cathedral acoustic with little more than a tasteful though austere organ accompaniment. The repertoire isn't just conservative, traditional hymns and carols. One is harmonized by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and there are a number of contributions by contemporary composers Thomas Adès, Judith Weir, and John Tavener, all of which are probing, sincere, even personal examples of their art (and some are daringly liberated, harmonically speaking). The downside for some listeners--at least on repeated hearings--is that the entire service is heard, sermons and all. Others may take this in the spirit of a Paul McCreesh liturgical reconstruction, with congregational singing included. --David Patrick Stearns

Give Up
Give Up Give Up, the debut release by this indie supergroup composed of Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie and Jimmy Tamborello from Dntel, is a smart, quaint, and often transcendent little pop record. The roots of the album lie in "(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan," a woozy, gorgeous song recorded for the rad 2001 Dntel album Life Is Full of Possibilities. With Jimmy in L.A. and Ben in Seattle, the two simply mailed tracks back and forth, collaborating via (you guessed it) the United States Post Office. Lyrically it's far breezier and happier (though not too happy) than anything Gibbard had written up to this point for Death Cab. The music is an elastic, very smart update of synth-pop and the melodies crystal clear, while the backing vocals courtesy of Jen Wood and Jenny Lewis are spartan and pretty. The songs stick in your head for days at a time. Forget the tags that have been thrown up against this music--Poptronica? New new new order? Please just enjoy this album. It just might be a classic--but of what exactly, we're not quite sure. --Mike McGonigal

Anne of Green Gables - The Continuing Story
Anne of Green Gables - The Continuing Story In a departure from L.M. Montgomery's book series, this third TV movie jumps ahead to World War I and puts Anne and her beloved Gilbert smack in the middle of it. Instead of marrying Gilbert after her teaching days--as she does in the books--Anne spends a disillusioning year with him in New York City, and then the couple quickly marries before the good doctor ships out to France. (In the book Rilla of Ingleside, Anne's sons go to war and her youngest daughter is separated from her sweetheart.) Impetuous as ever, Anne joins the Red Cross and crosses the pond to track down her husband when his letters are returned unread. What follows is an adventure that takes her through battle zones--where the bodies pile up faster than you can say Saving Private Ryan--and on to London with a half-orphaned baby, her best friend's injured husband, and a tangle of international intrigue. Fans of the 10-book series may balk at the divergences and the fact that very little time is spent on Prince Edward Island. But the book's unrestrained romanticism and unapologetic sentimentality remain intact, as well as the surviving cast of the prior two movies, most notably Megan Follows as Anne and Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert. This movie, produced in 2000, clocks in at 185 minutes and is suitable for ages 9 and older. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Bond: On Her Majesty's Secret Service
Bond: On Her Majesty's Secret Service Australian model George Lazenby took up the mantle of the world's most suave secret agent when Sean Connery retired as James Bond--prematurely, it turned out. Connery returned in Diamonds Are Forever before leaving the role to Roger Moore and Lazenby's subsequent career fizzled, yet this one-hit wonder is responsible for one of the best Bond films of all time.

In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, 007 leaves the Service to privately pursue his SPECTRE nemesis Blofeld (played this time by Telly Savalas), whose latest master plan involves a threat to the world's crops by agricultural sterilization. Bond teams up with suave international crime lord Draco (Gabriele Ferzetti) and falls in love with--and marries--his elegant daughter, Tracy (Diana Rigg). Bond goes monogamous? Not at first; after all he has Blofeld's harem to seduce. Lazenby hasn't the intensity of Connery but he has fun with his quips and even lampoons the Bond image in a playful pre-credits sequence, and Rigg, fresh from playing sexy Emma Peel in The Avengers, matches 007 in every way. Former editor Peter Hunt makes a strong directorial debut, deftly handling the elaborate action sequences--including a car chase turned road rally through the icy snow--with a kinetic finesse and a dash of humor. Though not a hit on its original release, On Her Majesty's Secret Service has become a fan favorite and the closest the series has come to capturing the spirit of Ian Fleming's books. --Sean Axmaker

Kiki's Delivery Service
Kiki's Delivery Service In Hayao Miyazaki's magical Kiki's Delivery Service, a 13-year-old girl meets the world head on as she spends her first year soloing as an apprentice witch. Kiki (Kirsten Dunst) is still a little green and plenty headstrong, but also resourceful, imaginative, and determined. With her trusty wisp of a cat Jiji (a gently subdued Phil Hartman) by her side she's ready to take on the world, or at least the quaintly European seaside village she's chosen as her new home. Miyazaki's gentle rhythm and meandering narrative capture the easy pulse of real life (even if his subject is a girl flying high upon a broomstick) and charts the everyday struggles and growing pains of his plucky heroine with sensitivity and understanding. Beautifully detailed animation and the rich designs of the picture-postcard seaside town of red-tiled roofs and cobblestone streets only add to the sense of wonder. This charming animated fantasy is a wholesome, life-affirming picture that doesn't speak down to kids or up to adults. --Sean Axmaker

Open Question: Any suggestions? I don't know what to do with my life! (Regarding college degrees)?
I am currently attending school. Since I was in junior high, I have wanted to be a teacher, but now that I am older and a little wiser, I have seen that I don't have the authority/spine to do it. I want to help people in their lives, but I am a little panicked at the moment because I have always had a plan. I am 2 years into college (Thankfully mostly core classes) and I have no clue what to do with my life! I enjoy working with kids, but I don't think I could handle a classroom--I'd be walked all over. I have thought about being a speech therapist, but I am deaf in my left ear and have concerns about whether I'd be able to help my clients, and I have thought deeply about going into psychology, but I struggle with depression and I am afraid that it would make it worse. I am taking Introduction to Human Services this semester in the hopes that it might help. Any suggestions? Thank you, I just would like some other brains helping out with ideas. :) Thank you! Open Question: Are basic cable channels free?
I've been posting A LOT of questions on Yahoo lately. Most of my questions have to do with this analog-to-digital switch, I am so confused. I was perfectly ok with having my old analog set connected to a DVR box provided by the cable company I currently subscribe to. I know the switch wouldn't affect me (since I'm a cable subscriber) but I decided to upgrade anyway. I went out and bought a HDTV with a built-in tuner and upgraded to an HD DVR box, I've had nothing but problems since doing this. The HD DVR box is crap! My picture constantly freezes, audio drops like every two seconds and the box will not record an entire program. Instead, it will record like 45 minutes of a 60 minute program. I'm currently paying TWC $150 for phone, Internet and cable. I was thinking about canceling the cable and phone and just keeping the Internet service. Question: if I connect the cable line to my HDTV, will I get basic cable channels for free? I remember being able to do this 10 years ago. I used to get CNN, ESPN, TBS, TNT, SpikeTV, Food Network, USA Network all for free just having the cable line that ran into my house from the outside hooked-up to my TV. Will I have to pay for these channels now? I keep hearing that cable companies are making people pay for these channels. Is this true? If these channels are still free, I could drop my cable company, connect the cable line to my HDTV and save some money. (more...)

Open Question: Dear Sirs: I found an E-Mail Address and Name linked up with my own E-Mail Address: It was ?
Furthermore, I had wondered who may had been erasing my E-Mail since around 1 AUG 2008. I see that there are some "poor persons" who feel it is their quest in life to stop or just slow down what they term as "gigalos" or "pretty boys." They do, in all fact, despise athletes, good lovers, and strong men with deep voices. They also seem to think they are very able to communicate about things religious. I want Joe Aycock, Alex Jones, and Marvin Trayler, associated with the local Salvation Army looked into as persons that may have had something to do with the erasures after I wrote a polite E-Mail to the emergency services director at a shelter, here, called the "S. A. M. M. Shelter," 910 West Commerce St., here, San Antonio, TX 78207. I believe that Joe Aycock, Alex Jones, and their Assigns are, in fact, racketeering against me, trying to stalk me electronically and to find out whether of not I watch "porn." I believe that they are sexless people, and they can tell me nothing about Faith or religious beliefs. Their religious views I have no need for. That way, I may remain a religioius person. I believe that people here also are "playing sick" and, thereby, they seek to get social security bebefits and shelter space. The point here is that my E-Mail address, material received, and money I make and have, is off limits to stalkers and male abusers. I suppose now they have a spanking reserved for me personally that I do not want them in my life as a nepotist of their "religious gurus" and actual race-baiters. Thank you for your time. I want to stop the interference of outside influences into my life so that I may begin living here, and in Texas, without a shadow of superstitution over me. I have a clean record, and I am not what is termed in academic circles as "a user-abuser." I am just tired of the abuse. I have contacted an attorney by the name of Mary Mendez, St. Mary's University Legal Clinic, Center for Social Justice. Thank you for looking into this matter, as it has been a long time in getting resolved and grasped for proper solution. Afterall, there are predators and stalkers on the street, and they show up also in the shelters pretending no to have a penny, wanting to stop the people who sue to stop collective thieves and local "corrupt" evil-doers. Thank you, again. I am and remain, the Undersigned, Sincerely, James Howard Day (Jr.) JHD, JR/jhd, jr Enclosure(s): 0 DATE: FRIDAY, 9 JANUARY 2009 TIME: 16:40 HOURS/4:40 P. M. (more...)
