I Know Where I'm Going! - Criterion Collection

Assured, headstrong Joan Webster (Wendy Hiller) knows exactly what she wants and how to get it, until she's stranded in a rough, windswept Scottish village--in sight but out of reach of an island where a rich fiancée, a lavish wedding, and a loveless marriage await. While a raging storm prevents her crossing, a quiet, modest, and penniless Scottish laird named Torquil (Roger Livesey) slowly wins her cheerfully mercenary heart and upsets her carefully arranged plans with messy emotions. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's much-loved romantic drama is a handsome work full of vivid, offbeat characters (Pamela Brown is especially striking as an earthy villager always accompanied by a pack of bloodhounds) living in a world that's part tradition and part myth. Villagers work and celebrate with the simple spirit of common folk ("We're not poor, we just haven't any money," Torquil admonishes the materialist Joan). Powell brings his lively manner and bold visual invention to the creation of his beautiful but harsh primal paradise, culminating in the awesome spectacle of a massive whirlpool that could be the work of the "legend of Corryvreckan" or the stormy embodiment of Joan's hysterical heart. Awash in mystic power of ancient castles and chanted legends,
I Know Where I'm Going is one of the most romantic visions of Britain's most magical director.

Highland Broadsword: Five Manuals of Scottish Regimental Swordsmanship

Five manuals of Scottish Swordsmanship from the 17th - 19th centuries
he basket-hilted Scottish "broadsword" or Claymore has long been a symbol for Scottish independence and the fierce regard in which Scots warriors are still held. While the rest of Europe emphasized the use of smaller, lighter swords or curved cavalry models, the Scottish weapon retained its medieval flavor.
The methods by which these swords were employed were recorded in numerous published treatises from the 17th - 19th centuries, true manuals combining fencing theory with practical exercises for techniques unique to these brutal weapons.
Veteren swordsmen and accomplished authors Paul Wagner and Mark Rector present five key treatises that offer a wealth of advice for fighting with both the basket-hilted broadsword and the single stick -- an ash or rattan stick mounted in a wicker or leather basket-hilt, used both for training and as a weapon in its own right.
Included are complete transcriptions of: "Anti-Pugilism" by Sinclair, illustrated with copper plate engravings; MacGregor’s "Lectures on the Art of Defence;" "The Art of Defence on Foot with Broadsword and Saber" by Taylor; "Fencing Familiarized" by Mathewson; and Henry Angelo’s "On the Use of the Broadsword," rendered in full color.
These texts contain useful exercises for historical swordsmen of any background. In addition, Paul Wagner provides a full introductio n and overview on the fascinating basket-hilted broadsword itself with a survey of surviving examples.

Alive and Kicking: A Story of Crime, Addiction and Redemption in Glasgow's Gangland
From running with the infamous Calton Tongs to running Calton Athletic, David Bryce's life story is a remarkable account of crime, violence, alcoholism, and drug addiction in Glasgow's gangland. A respected "hard man," Bryce worked his way through most of HM's prisons in Scotland before an epiphany in 1977 made him realize that he was a hopeless alcoholic who needed help. A five-year battle followed, during which he sank into the abyss of heroin addiction before finally getting clean. In 1985, in an effort to help others who were struggling against substance abuse, Bryce set up Calton Athletic, a football team and social group made up solely of recovering drug addicts. Reformed gangster Jimmy Boyle was one of the first to have faith in Bryce and Calton Athletic, but the club eventually won widespread respect. Alive and Kicking is an inspirational tale of survival and success against the odds.

Voting Question: Remote, Beautiful Cottages in Scotland?
Hey, me and my husband are looking for an isolated picturesque self-catering cottage in Scotland to spend our honeymoon in. We preferably want traditional features such as an open fire in a rural setting with lots of wildlife. We are taking our dog so it must allow pets. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Voting Question: How Do You Get Rid Of A Lisp?
I'll Be 13 In A Few Weeks Time. Im One Of The Eldest In My Year, Im Pretty Popular, & I Have Lots Of Friends.
I've Never Been Self-Concious, Until I moved Into High School (Scotland, UK) In August 08.
But, I've Became Really Embarrased About My Lisp & Voice. My Voice Sounds Really Babyish & My Lips Makes My "S" Sounds Slushy & My "R" Sounds Like "L" Sounds. I Cant Go To Speech Therapy As I've been Before & It Didn't Really Help Much. I Could Try Going Back Though.
Also, My Front Tooth Sticks Out Quite Alot ( I Need Braces ) And, Could It be That?
No Nasty Comments Please. Thanks xxoxoxoxo
Yeah, I Know Scottish Kids Can Be Such Bitches Lol.

Resolved Question: I need help with my confidence?
My whole life I've been teased because I've always been different. I moved to America when I was five and was teased because of my accent. I moved to Scotland and get teased because of my American accent. I guess I'm a decent guy, people tease me and make fun of me but they still hang out with me and enjoy my company etc..
It never bothers me but it resulted me in having zero confidence. This guy who used to be my friends would just slag me off and he was really popular and got all the girls. He would just lay into me in front of girls and talk about how great he was making fun of my skininess and flexing his muscles and putting a funny voice on to imitate me. People always make fun of me and I've grown used to it and it doesn't bother me I just take it, should I fight back.
Does it make me look weak in front of girls, I've pulled girls in the past and had a couple girlfirends but never any in school. My friends tell me I always look pretty handsome when girls rate me outta ten. I never really talk to girls that aren't one's I've known for ages, and find it hard to talk to them. I've never had any confidence and nothing can make me convince myself that I'm not the ugly idiot loser that I think I am. I'm paranoid I always think people are laughing at me and I think I hear my name in conversations when I don't.
I've never been called ugly but I always think people think I am. How do I improve my self confidence, how do I convince myself what I'm hearing is just in my head and that they're not talking to me.

Resolved Question: My fiance and I are about to buy a house together. Do I need to be on the mortgage to be on the title deeds?
We live in Scotland in the UK. I am self employed and don't have accounts so I would rather not be on the mortgage, but we are both putting a lot of money in as deposit and as we are not married, need the house to be in both our names. I have been told by one mortgage advisor that I have to be on the mortgage. Does anyone know if this is right?
Graham, we share the bills, he pays the mortgage, I pay council tax, electricity, food shopping etc. I am also paying about 70000 more on the deposit...

Resolved Question: What do you think of Andre Nel?
Against my better judgement, I really like Andre Nel.
Then again, I have always been partial to mass murderers and cult leaders, so maybe he just continues that trend for me.
People may be confused, as Nel is South African, and judging by my previous record, I?m not their biggest fans.
But try as I might, I just can?t help but like him.
Andre is the sort of guy you would love to have on your team, he gives it everything he has, and when that doesn?t work, you can sit at first slip and p1ss yourself while he rolls around the ground after beating a tailender with a straight one.
Clearly he is insane, I wouldn?t argue that.
But if I had to watch a fast bowler late at night, after a few beers, there is no one else in the modern game I would prefer to watch.
We all know the strain of professionalism is killing entertaining cricketers, in bowling, the situation is particularly grim.
The life seems to have disappeared from them, as Probot bowlers and toilers are taking over.
While watching probing overs from Stuart Clark, my mind wanders to thoughts about self mutilation.
When Matthew Hoggard grunts in, I wonder why I spend so much time watching this game.
And if I have to deal with another Kiwi grinder chuggin in for a long spell, I might go postal, or worse, become a scientologist.
That?s why I love Andre, he is completely different from the current crop of fast bowlers, other than his protégé Sreesanth.
I love it when he gives a vicious outburst for what seems a fairly common occurrence, i.e. a 2 minute spray for a batsman missing an outswinger.
His exaggerated follow through for every ball.
The way he turns fast bowling into performance art.
His amazement in not getting a wicket every ball.
The look on his face when a batsman has the audacity to hit a four of him, or a single.
When he dropped Allan Donald with a bouncer, and cried about it.
That he has been caught drink driving and using weed.
He is also underrated as a bowler, the man is a perfect first change bowler.
He is tall, hard to play, always at you, can move the ball both ways, and has a more than handy bouncer.
If you told him to bowl up hill, into a gale, while it rained, on a road, with a midget on his back, he would do so.
You can?t find many people like that, most bowlers frown at the word midget.
But I think the best thing about him is that he makes the batsman assume he is a raving Looney.
Another man did this, his name was Merv Hughes.
While they laugh and scoff at his antics, his brain is ticking over with a new plan to get them out.
When they don?t take you seriously, they forget you?re a threat.
Here is to the high class buffoonery of Andre Nel.
Let?s hope like heck there is never another quite like him, as Scotland Yard don't need the extra work, but that there are several who are just as insane without the homicidal maniac bit.
Clearly a nutjob. He has an alter ego, an oxygen starved mountain man known as Gunther. He blames his onfield behaviour on this Gunther.

Voting Question: Self Confidence Help?
Hi,
Ok so here goes. I went to school two years ago when i was 15/16 years old. When i left i basically ran out lol i really didnt like it, i was never bullied but its just a place i never liked. I had a couple of friends but cos i was off all the time (!) i never really kept them as friends when i went back cos they have "moved on" with other friends and i soon left. I went to a college with my sister to study highers but left after a bit cos i just couldnt understand it. Ever since then ive been sitting in the house doing nothing. I have put on weight, have no friends (some from school which i message on bebo and myspace) but none face to face.
I turned 18 two months ago and i cant believe its took me this long to realise how much ive wasted the last two years of my life.
I want to get a job but ive put on like 3/4 stone since leaving school and have no self confidence at all and to add to that ive always been shy.
I would love to act or sing, i was in the school choir for 1st and 2nd year but left after i started not going to school. But i dont have the confidence.
I would like to move down south, maybe liverpool for university (im currently doing an open learning course for my highers Again!, and currently live in scotland) Just to get out and also if i moved down south then i could "be myself" i understand it sounds cheesy but if im honest i dont have a clue who "i am" i want to find myself if you know what i mean. But again i need money to do that, and need a job but i have no confidence to actually get it especially when i feel everyone is watching me and my weight.(im a size 18) and it doesnt help that during arguments my dad and sister both called me fat etc which makes it a horrid circle. I know the more i stay in the worse its going to get but i just cant do it. How can i improve myself? Please, thanks!

Everyone has been so kind. Thank You

Voting Question: What's Wrong With Me :REPOST with full story?
When I was 11 (March 22nd 2008 [10 days before my 12th birthday]) My mum and dad were arguing. My dad threw glasses and smashed the phone spat on my mum and everything. I Shouted down several times from the top of the stairs to stop it because my younger brother was crying and so was i . But then i was sitting at the top of the stairs telling my dad to calm down , he had my mum by the throat when i screamed at him and swore he threatened to hit me with the brush from downstairs but i wouldn't stop yelling so he chased me up the stairs and i shut my door which he broke down and smashed my phone when i tried to phone the police. he was bashing my mums wrists on the banister as she tried to get him away from me my brother was hitting him. He calmed down them he and my mum went downstairs and started shouting again. my mum came up to calm us down and told us to use the phone in her bedroom to call the police so we did. the police came but my mum wouldn't press charges because it turns out he had been wanted by the police in scotland for 8 years. Since i was 4 my life had been a lie. He continually harrasses us that he wants home visits but my mum refuses. i'm not close to my mum because i don't spend much time with her - she works full time and is hardly ever in and even then she has to catch up with work or take my brother to football which she also does for most of the weekends and on a sunday we go to our nans for a meal . i cry all the time and i cut myself i get jealous of anyone who has more than me or is slimmer or prettier or nicer i take the slightest insults to heart and permanently put myself down. But in front of everyone i seem happy-go-lucky becuase i act happy and loving so people don't know what's wrong with me and i get straight A's. What's wrong with me. Yes i probably do have self esteem issues but that can't just be it because people always compliment me and i believe it for a bit and it makes me feel good until i look in the mirror. I'm 12, 5'5" and 150lbs (i've gained 17lbs)
P.S. he went to prison for what he was wanted for and got 4 years but he can get out in 2 on parole and good behaviour.

Resolved Question: Should I do a guided tour or self-drive?
My husband and I are planning on going to Ireland or Scotland in April. We have never been there and we are wondering if we should go on a guided tour or on a self-drive tour. Neither one of us have ever been out of the states so we didn't know how well we would do driving, but we are private people and we didn't know how it would be going on a tour with other people. Also if you have any suggestions on the best places to go I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Resolved Question: Are they really serrious?
As much as I Love Scotland and the Scots this will never happen against the Mighty Black Machine
Scotland have been urged to visualise their feelings of elation following what would be just a first-ever win over the All Blacks this weekend.
The All Blacks will meet the Frank Hadden-coached Scots at Murrayfield, Edinburgh, on Sunday, with Scotland winless over the All Blacks despite 103 years of competition.
The closest Scotland has ever gotten to beating the All Blacks was a 0-0 draw when the two sides clashed in 1964.
Despite the fact Scotland is likely to field a near B-strength team on Sunday morning (New Zealand time), the Home Nations under-achievers have been told to think big.
Part of that renewed belief has been put down to a mentoring programme for their test stars, one which has seen former All Black great Sean Fitzpatrick provide advice with Scotland hooker Ross Ford.
The programme is part of the 'Winning Scotland Foundation', the brainchild of former Scotland wing and multi-millionaire Bill Gammell.
"I would never expect to go out onto any pitch anywhere without the belief that I could win, so the most important thing (against New Zealand) is for the coach to ensure the players absolutely believe they are fully capable of winning," Gammell said.
"I believe that any Scottish team must go out onto the park believing it can win and that comes from the leadership inspiring individuals to believe they can win.
"It is totally in the mental attitude, the power of a positive mental and winning attitude is huge. From where I sat, Scotland should have beaten Argentina in the World Cup, but I don't believe the players believed they could.
"The players take responsibility on the pitch, they make the decisions, and have total self-belief and the difference between a successful and unsuccessful rugby player is being mentally strong, having self-belief.
"The point of Winning Mentors is trying to put the experience of guys from the past, who have learnt lessons, who have seen the challenges Scottish internationals face, to help them recognise that there is no bar (to achievement); it's up to the individual to get there.
"I'd have everyone visualising how great we're going to feel when we beat New Zealand and have the players to visualise and believe that."
The All Blacks arrive in Edinburgh on Tuesday morning (New Zealand time).
They will be without regular starting hooker Andrew Hore, ruled out of the remainder of the season-ending tour after less than five minutes of Saturday night's 19-14 win over the Wallabies.
Veteran fullback Mils Muliaina will also miss the clash after deciding to fend off the first two tests of the tour following the birth of his first child.
Joining Fitzpatrick in the mentoring programme, are former Scottish greats Roy Laidlaw, John Rutherford, Jim Calder, David Sole, Colin Deans, Gordon Bulloch and Gregor Townsend.
Scottish tennis ace Scott Murray is also involved.
Townsend was no stranger at tasting defeat at the hands of the All Blacks during his lengthy test career.
He said any initiative such as the mentoring programme had to be good for the fortunes of the Scottish national team.
"I've been overwhelmed by the response of these mentors, 25 in all, who all genuinely want to help, which is fantastic for Scottish rugby," he said.
"The concept of mentoring has proven very successful in business and education, and research has shown to be successful in sport as well.
"Everybody who has made it to the top has had a mentor at some point in their lives, but there have been no real formal programmes in sport, not just in Scotland, but around the world, in mentoring like this.
"Already I am seeing the relationships take off and it's very exciting for me because I believe it can make a huge difference to the players."
