The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror
'Twas the night (okay, more like the week) before Christmas, and all through the tiny community of Pine Cove, California, people are busy buying, wrapping, packing, and generally getting into the holiday spirit.
But not everybody is feeling the joy. Little Joshua Barker is in desperate need of a holiday miracle. No, he's not on his deathbed; no, his dog hasn't run away from home. But Josh is sure that he saw Santa take a shovel to the head, and now the seven-year-old has only one prayer: Please, Santa, come back from the dead.
But hold on! There's an angel waiting in the wings. (Wings, get it?) It's none other than the Archangel Raziel come to Earth seeking a small child with a wish that needs granting. Unfortunately, our angel's not sporting the brightest halo in the bunch, and before you can say "Kris Kringle," he's botched his sacred mission and sent the residents of Pine Cove headlong into Christmas chaos, culminating in the most hilarious and horrifying holiday party the town has ever seen.
Move over, Charles Dickens -- it's Christopher Moore time.

Cottages by the Sea, The Handmade Homes of Carmel, America's First Artist Community
Carmel, California, has always been a community of artists, writers, and freethinkers. During the early part of its rich history, the area was home to Robinson Jeffers, Mary Austin, Ansel Adams, Charles Greene, Jack London, George Sterling, Upton Sinclair, and Henry Miller, among other great artists of the twentieth century. During the late 1980s, actor Clint Eastwood, a longtime resident, served as mayor.
While much about Carmel has changed since the days when Robinson Jeffers could be seen strolling the beach, the area remains one of America's most beautiful. It is also home to many of America's most charming but rarely seen cottages. In Carmel's residential district-- a very private, heavily wooded area surrounding the shops and tourist attractions of the town's often busy main street-- there are no sidewalks or streetlights. The U.S. Postal Service does not offer mail delivery. Homes have no addresses; they are simply known by name. Here, it is not uncommon for tourists, so intrigued by the uniqueness of the local architecture, to climb the fences of private homes in order to get a closer look or snapshot of the house on the other side. Now, for the first time, 34 of these homes can be seen more advantageously, in more than 270 specially commissioned and archival exterior and interior photographs.

Views of Seaside: Commentaries and Observations on a City of Ideas

Seaside, Florida, is a town designed as an "ideal" community, where houses have front porches and verandas, picket fences, sleeping porches, where streets are carved and paved with brick, and sidewalks are made of pebbles and seashells. This resort town on Florida’s panhandle coast has had an extraordinary impact on the thinking of architects, developers, planners, traffic engineers, sociologists, environmentalists, and even political thinkers. As the first, the most widely published, and now at twenty-five by far the most esteemed and well-known example of the revival of traditional neighborhood design, Seaside has become the icon of the New Urbanism movement, and has been emulated extensively.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip ? Warplanes pressing one of the Israel's deadliest assaults ever against Palestinian militants widened their sights on Sunday, dropping bombs on smuggling tunnels that are a major weapons pipeline for the Gaza Strip's Islamic Hamas rulers.
Israel's Cabinet authorized the military to call up 6,500 reserve soldiers for a possible ground invasion and moved tanks, infantry and armored units to the Gaza border. Since it began Saturday, Israel's offensive against Gaza rocket squads has been carried out exclusively from the air.
Crowds of Gazans, backed by a bulldozer, breached the border wall with Egypt to escape the chaos. Syria, reflecting the rage in the Arab world over Israel's aerial onslaught, broke off indirect peace talks with the Jewish state.
The airstrikes, which initially targeted Hamas security compounds, killed more than 280 Palestinians and wounded hundreds more in its first 24 hours, said Gaza health official Dr. Moaiya Hassanain. A Palestinian human rights group said among 251 dead it counted, 20 were children under 16 and nine were women.
The Palestinian Center for Human Rights said it was difficult to keep an exact count because of chaos at the hospitals, and difficulty in identifying dismembered bodies.
The civilian casualties included a 15-year-old boy who died in southern Gaza on Sunday in an attack on a greenhouse near the border. At least 644 people were wounded, Hassanain said.
Battered militants managed to launch more than 20 rockets and mortars at Israeli border communities. The number of attacks was down sharply from a day earlier, indicating the Israeli airstrikes took a stiff toll. Israel's head of military intelligence told Israel's Cabinet on Sunday that Hamas' ability to fire rockets had been reduced by 50 percent.
Still, two rockets struck close to Israel's largest southern city, Ashdod, reaching deeper into Israel than ever before, and confirming Israel's concern that militants are now able to put major cities within rocket range. No serious injuries were reported. The rockets landed some 23 miles (38 kilometers) from Gaza, doubling the militants' previous range.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said it was unclear when the operation would end. The situation in southern Israel "is liable to last longer than we are able to foresee at this time," he told his Cabinet.
The carnage has inflamed Arab public opinion, and the diplomatic fallout came swiftly.
A Syrian official said Damascus would suspend indirect peace talks with Israel, begun earlier this year, over the Gaza attacks. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, says "Israel's aggression closes all the doors" to any move toward a settlement in the region. Israel and Syria held four rounds of negotiations in Turkey.
Condemnations and protests against the Israeli offensive swept the Arab world for a second straight day, occasionally turning violent. A suicide bomber on a bicycle blew himself up in the midst of a large demonstration in northern Iraq. Israeli troops fired on a violent protest in the West Bank, killing a Palestinian man.
Hamas' fiercest rival, the Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, urged the Islamic militant group to renew a truce with Israel that collapsed last week. However, Abbas has had no influence in Gaza since Hamas seized control there by force in June 2007.
The Israeli army says Palestinian militants have fired more than 300 rockets and mortars at Israeli targets over the past week and 10 times that number over the past year.
Israel's foreign minister Tzipi Livni told "Meet the Press" that Israel launched its strike because Gaza's Hamas rulers were smuggling weapons and building up "a small army."
But, she added, "Our goal is not to reoccupy the Gaza Strip." Israeli soldiers and settlers left the tiny seaside territory in 2005 after a 38-year occupation, though Israel retained control of Gaza's borders.
The Israeli military said warplanes attacked 40 tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border in the course of four minutes Sunday. Medics said two people were killed and 25 were injured. Witnesses reported large fires and dozens of explosions. Black smoke rising from the area of the attacks was especially dense closer to the Mediterranean, apparently after missile struck a makeshift underground fuel pipeline.

Voting Question: What's the name of this 80's AUS (UK?) children's TV sci-fi series?
Hi, I'm looking for the name of an 80's children's TV series which was - I think - either Australian or English. The series dealt with a small community living by the seaside, where some of the children discover that there are aliens living among them in (very surly) human form. These aliens live in these foamy constructions under the sea (looked like soap bubbles), and they have to dive down to get there. At the end of the series, one of the boy dies, having hit his head when the boat they are using to escape is rocked on the waves...
Many thanks!

Resolved Question: Does speeding by 2X reduce my chance of being hit by a rock by 50%?
In my seaside community, there's a cliff side road that begins with the signs "30 MPH" and "Danger - Falling Rocks". I wonder, if I sped through at 60 MHP instead, do the odds of being hit by falling rock then reduce by 50%? Or, does it stay the same, since the chance of being hit by a falling rock is set by being in a certain location at a very specific time, which is then independent of my car's speed?

Resolved Question: Fluids help on this physics question?
To better fight fires in your seaside community, the local fire brigade has asked you to construct a pump system to draw seawater from the ocean to the top of the steep cliff adjacent to the water where most of the homes are. If the cliff is 12.9 m high, and the pump is capable of producing a gauge pressure of 141 kPa, how much water can be pumped using a hose with a radius of 3.6 cm? (Neglect the viscosity of the water.)

Resolved Question: Are there any unspoiled Florida (Emerald Coast) residential communities left?
My husband and I are in our 30's and we are looking at a possible relocation to Florida. We do not want crowed tourist areas. What we would love to find is a gulf coast community that vacationers have not found or there are very few and the price for a house with a view of the gulf is somewhat reasonably priced. Oh yeah, and there are employment oDestin, Pensacola, Seaside, Panama City areas are the types of places we want to avoid. Does this place exist?
Appalachicola is nice. We went to St. George Island last summer and we spent some time there. We are looking for some place we could find a home to purchase that would be beach front or beach view.

Resolved Question: can someone summarize this arcticle?
K i am not trying to give an excuse but my dad just pasted away from pacriatic cancer and my teacher wants this summary in so if someone can summarize this article to the best of there abiiltiesi really appreciate it
Long known for its coal-burning power plants and oil refineries, New Jersey is about to take a major step toward clean energy with offshore wind turbines that would generate enough electricity to power half of the houses in North Jersey.
A pilot project to install dozens of turbines off the coast is scheduled to be approved next week and will act as a cornerstone in Governor Corzine?s push for renewable energy.
Five companies have submitted proposals for a $19 million Board of Public Utilities grant that state officials say will boost the project. Plans range from 74 towering wind turbines a few miles off the coast of Atlantic City to 225 smaller ones off Seaside Park.
The 350 megawatts generated in this first wave will not make a huge dent in the amount of coal, natural gas or nuclear energy used to generate the almost 20,000 megawatts needed in New Jersey. But advocates hope this wind farm will lead to more.
?We need a new way to generate power, and offshore wind is essential to our future energy demands,? said Jeanne Fox, the BPU president.
The decision, expected on Oct. 3, could make New Jersey the first state to have an offshore wind farm, although Delaware officials approved a plan this summer.
Land-based wind turbines have been providing electricity everywhere from Atlantic City to West Texas in recent years. But even though the wind is strongest at sea, offshore wind farms have never been built in the U.S., largely because of the enormous construction costs, environmental concerns, and community objections that a 250-foot turbine would mar picturesque seaside views.
That is changing after the success of offshore wind farms in Europe that have shown minimal environmental impact. Some are built far enough off the coast that they are barely seen.
1,000 megawatts
Corzine wants more than just a pilot program. The proposed state Energy Master Plan calls for 1,000 megawatts to be generated by offshore wind. That may be increased to 3,000 when the plan is adopted this fall.
Environmentalists have long supported wind power, but they do have concerns. Some believe the construction will disrupt life on the ocean floor. There is fear that the 100- to 150-foot blades will chop up birds.
Another concern is how much this will eventually affect a consumer?s electric bill.
Constructing offshore turbines is expensive. One applicant, Garden State Offshore Energy, said it would cost about $1.1 billion to build its planned 96 turbines 16 to 21 miles off the coast of Atlantic City. In the long run, however, it may be less expensive than fossil fuels since wind is free and there is no need for expensive air filtering equipment like those required at coal plants.
?Whether wind will be more costly than other forms, we don?t know,? said Stefanie Brand, director of the state Division of Rate Counsel, which advocates on behalf of consumers. ?Constructing a new generation of power sources is expensive. We want them to be as economical as they can be.?
Electricity from the turbines will flow from underwater cables to power stations onshore, where it will enter the power grid. If the turbines are built off Atlantic City, much of the power generated will be drawn into South Jersey. But more turbines would mean wind energy would eventually make it to North Jersey. Onshore wind farms located in sparsely populated areas in the U.S. have had trouble getting their power into the grid; that is not a problem in densely populated New Jersey.
Regulators and the applicants believe the BPU?s $19 million grant will fast track the project with permits needed from the state Department of Environmental Protection and the federal Minerals Management Service, which would lease portions of the ocean floor to builders.
?It?s very much a head start,? Fox said. ?The permitting agencies should be more sensitive about moving this forward.?
Several plans are similar, but each applicant says they are the best for different reasons.
* Garden State Offshore Energy, a partnership of PSEG and Winergy Power LLC, said their technology allows them to build wind turbines farther offshore than their competitors. They also tout a plan to use wind turbines to store compressed air in tanks that could be used to generate electricity when there is no wind.
* Bluewater Wind, a Hoboken company, said its selection this summer to build Delaware?s first wind farm would allow it to develop in New Jersey at a lower cost.
* Fishermen?s Energy of New Jersey, a consortium of fishing companies in Cape May, said it would be the best steward of the oceans since its members know the Jersey coast better than anyone.
* Environmental Technologies of New York said its smaller vertical axis turbines will

Voting Question: Does anyone know anything about Voodoo- ? And it's merit?
Is there anybody who can help me understand the practice of voodoo and it's merit?
Two years ago I moved to a small Florida seaside community and was immediately befriended by a guy who seemed genuinely nice. After a few months I started getting a bad vibe from this guy. He seemed to take much pleasure in other peoples misfortune. In fact, when very bad things happened to people around him I sensed it fuelled almost an elation within him that sort of shocked me-I noticed his wife always seemed silent and unhappy- and one time when we were alone she asked me strange questions-like if I knew what he did for work! She claimed she did not know which struck me as COMPLETELY bizarre as they have been together 14 years. She also confided in me that she wanted to leave him but was fearful claiming he was the most "vindictive, and inherently evil person" she had ever known. My conversation with her that day ...for a lack of a better phrase....completely freaked me out as it came out of nowhere. We had never spoke more then two words to each other and she was speaking to me in an almost desperate tone.... while my friend had stepped outside to use his cell phone. Shortly after that weird conversation my friend started opening up to me as well- He was from the backwoods of Louisiana, His parents were abusive- and he thought he had these mystical voodoo like powers-He claimed he could heal people-hurt people- and something to do with voodoo-Honestly-when he spoke about this stuff- I kind of winced inside, never really paying attention, always thinking that this guy was a nutjub...And one day I just ended out friendship-I simply stopped calling him and made it a point to never answer the door- Soon, I started getting just evil, threatening IM's- Some even threatening me with everything from horrific curses, to death. I should have saved them- but brushed them off because I thought he was harmless, and basically nuts----Then, really bad, really strange things started happening to me one after another- First my Mom who I was very close to passed away suddenly and with no warning while here in town visiting-She was 68, no cause of death could be determined....Then I was hospitalised with a rare - antibiotic resistant blood infection which almost killed me-I'm a 40 year old, totally healthy guy who never even gets the flu- I was hospitalised for 3 months-Then, while walking to my car one night...right outside my house- I was attacked by two guys dressed in black wearing ski masks-I was pistol whipped- and after 5 minutes of being severely beaten up,one of the guys pulled me up and put the gun to my head- My neighbour (Thank God) came running out of his house screaming the Police were on their way. It took 8 staples to put my scalp back together. The strange part was....there was no motive-These guys were perfectly silent-did not rob me - I live in a great neighbourhood- very low crime rate...etc....And c'mon- huge guys dressed in all black in ski masks????? That is not real. That is like movie stuff. Then I lost my job-I had a stellar work record, but suddenly and out of the blue my company scaled back my department and laid me off---another bizarre twist as I have worked for them for 7 years and they spent a lot of money to move me from Chicago down here to Fl-One month prior they had given me a great review and a raise. Now, my girlfriend of 11 years also very healthy---36 years old- who works out every day and eats right- has suddenly been hospitalised... first with an abdominal issues and had to endure two major abdominal surgeries in 9 days, and strange boils that have grown and seem to be ... antibiotic resistant. I feel I am a rationale guy- And while I don't want to let my mind wander down a road that would lead me to believe curses are real...etc....but the timing of all these events...one right after another are really scaring me. Can anyone tell me about voodoo-or curses- etc? Has anyone had any personal experience with such?
