Robin Hood: Elizabethan Ballad Settings Paul O'Dette has done more to introduce the lute and its extensive repertoire to modern ears than just about anyone. On Robin Hood, he plays a collection of Elizabethan ballads that were arranged for solo lute in the 16th century. Although the names of the composers of most of these pieces have been lost to us, the music is of a uniformly high quality and stands up very well next to the selections by known composers like William Byrd and Peter Phillips. O'Dette plays the selections on three instruments: the lute, the orpharion (a flat-back, metal-strung cousin to the lute), and the cittern, (a metal-strung instrument that is plucked with a quill rather than the fingers). The metal strings of the orpharion and cittern have a longer sustain than the gut strings of the lute, which gives the pieces played on them a sound similar to that of the modern steel-string guitar. O'Dette is renowned for his scholarship, which he demonstrates in the meticulously annotated liner notes, and for his formidable technique. Resolved Question: what do u think of homeless Puppy on Christmas Day ?
The first unwanted puppy this Christmas was handed over to a rescue shelter on Christmas Day, a charity has said. The Dogs Trust said a couple in Scotland had bought the puppy, called Theo, as a present to themselves but decided they couldn't look after him. So they took Theo to the West Calder Rehoming centre in West Lothian where he is being cared for. Staff at the centre are taking Theo home with them over Christmas, as they are worried he might get scared. (more...)

Did anyone feel a sense of schadenfreude when they heard this news about the Labour MP being mugged and beaten? Are Labour still 'tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime'? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/7419398.stm Police have launched an investigation after Labour MP Anne Moffat was attacked, BBC Scotland has learned. Ms Moffat said she was mugged by a gang of drunken youths and left with broken ribs while jogging near her home, in Cockenzie, East Lothian. The East Lothian MP was knocked unconscious and her watch and jewellery taken by her attackers. She was treated in hospital in Edinburgh after the incident on Friday and branded her attackers "scum". Resolved Question: Whats the best way to rent out my flat?
I own a small 2 bedroomed flat in West Lothian, Scotland and am having trouble meeting my (ever increasing) bills each month. I have a friend who is looking for a tennant, and he has suggested I move in to his spare room and rent out my flat for a year or two, as this would likely halve my outgoings each month, letting me pay off debt more quickly. I've checked the local market and prices, and it seems that my flat would rent for a good price, but am a bit unsure about what to do next. Should I hire an agent? What do they do, and how much money will they try to take from me as commission? Or should I try to let the flat privately? What are the risks involved in letting out a flat? This is my home rather than an investment, so I want to make sure it will be well looked after! Advice from landlords, agents and tennants would be really appreciated! (more...)

Resolved Question: TV Cameras in Edinburgh High Court?
There was a TV Series on about 10 years ago featuring real life court cases. TV Cameras were allowed in the Court so we could basically watch the full trial. I,m trying to find out more or even watch again the one called "The Lone Path Killer." This was about an older man in Scotland (The Lothian area I think?) walking home from the pub one night and he was attacked and stabbed to death for no reason whatsoever.
