My Romance - An Evening With Jim Brickman in Concert
My Romance - An Evening With Jim Brickman in Concert Pianist Jim Brickman invites a Salt Lake City audience to "pretend I'm over at your house for dinner and I'm playing you a few songs." This casual introduction is followed by 75 minutes of beautiful piano playing in a style that incorporates New Age, jazz, and pop influences. Brickman's solo piano pieces are romantic and impressionistic (his inspiration stemming from a contemplation of personal relationships) and his playing wonderfully emotive. Joining Brickman are singers Olivia Newton-John and Donny Osmond, and saxophonist Dave Koz--a mix that lends a nice variety to the show. Especially effective are Osmond's performance of "The Love of My Life" and Newton-John's "I Honestly Love You." Brickman also makes his vocal debut with a pleasingly mellow timbre on "The Love I Found in You" and "Star Bright."

Some critics bemoan a similarity of sound in his pieces, citing repetitious arpeggio playing over predictable chord progressions, but fans counter that that repetition defines Brickman's unique style. While this DVD and the compact disc of the same name are both based on the PBS special, it's worth noting that the song selection does vary between the two. Snuggle up by the fire with a loved one, grab a glass of wine, and spend the evening with Jim Brickman--you won't be disappointed. --Tami Horiuchi

Open Question: How Do I Politely Tell Someone I Can Not Babysit?
I'm a bit of a push over at times. My boyfriend's cousin (we're friends) just left me a voice mail asking me to babysit her son for a few hours tomorrow, starting at about 10am. The back story is the her husband has to work and her best friend is going to go into labor any second now. She insists she must be there for the birth of the child. It's very last second and I know that babies and births are unpredictable. So, a 2-3 hours could easily turn into 8-10 hours. I'm just nervous about my whole day being taken up. I normally don't mind sitting. But, I like to have specific hours. For example, I like knowing they'll be home no later than X time. I feel bad because I know this is very important to her, but it's so last second. Plus, the news keeps saying a big snowstorm is coming tomorrow and I hate driving in the snow. But, I feel badly about it and I feel like I'm being selfish too. But, it's so last second and I don't want to be roped into sitting at her house for 6-8 or maybe even more hours tomorrow. (more...)

Open Question: What do you think of my rant / article / intro?
An Ordinary Woman With Many Simple Questions What is it to be me? What makes me different from any other woman on the planet? Sure, I have different finger prints, my eyes change colour depending on the light reflecting off them, my teeth can not be matched? But I am sure there are plenty of women on the Earth who have medium brown hair, olive skin, blue (ish) eyes and are about five foot six inches tall. I?m sure my partner would tell you that I am unique and completely lovable? As he should tell you! My mother would probably tell you I am the most beautiful woman inside and out, ever to walk this land? Again, as she should! Isn?t it funny, how others are so eager to tell us how unique we are, but on the inside we?re constantly telling ourselves, ?there?s nothing special about me?! Maybe you will be the better judge. Maybe you can answer my questions and I warn you I have many. Many, many questions haze up my mind, making my world unclear? The funny thing is, no one seems to expect me to have such deep and meaningful thoughts? I often wonder why! Does everyone think I am dim? Or do they just think because I am a mum, all I want to talk about is my child? Or do they think as I never went to university, I can?t have anything important to say? I wonder if you ask yourself so many questions? I wonder if you lie in bed at night debating politics, religion, mathematical statistics, or simply whether you acted as a good wife that day? Did you care for your children in a respectable fashion, never loosing your temper? Did you tender to your husbands desires? Did you put on your make up and straighten your hair? Did you cook the most delicious three course meal? Did you further your career? Isn?t it amazing the stresses that media, relationships, religion and worst of all ourselves put onto women or more specifically wives and mothers? I?m constantly doubting my abilities as a woman. I will happily own up to that fact right now. I have a young daughter, who I love with all my heart! I have a husband, who I cherish dearly! But, a bad nights sleep, no energy to make myself look good and wear heels around the house? Can?t be arsed to put a ribbon in my hair! Can?t be arsed to make sure I eat, let alone whether my husband gets a three course meal when he comes home! I can?t even be arsed to read a gossip magazine, never mind studying towards a better career! Do you feel like this too? Or is that one of the things that makes me unique? I find it very hard to believe that I am the only woman in the world encountering these types of crises. I can?t be the only one who struggles sometimes with a heavy load and I know others have a much heavier load than I! Sure, there are women who have that incredible ability to do everything on the list above and more! Gosh I do wish I could be them from time to time?. But wouldn?t that boring? Wouldn?t men surely hate to live with a female robot? Sure they struggle with our hormonal mood swings, our crazy fetish for chocolate at 11pm, or the fact that we get unusual headaches at the worst of times? But surely we have that little sparkle, that quirky giggle, that completely free attitude after a glass or two of wine, or the fact that we are so comfortably sexy in our mans? oversized t-shirts in the morning? I do try to remind myself after a bad day that I am loved because I am different and that I don?t try to be something that I am not. My daughter just cried on cue, bringing me back to earth. I am not a journalist, I am not a freelance writer, although the idea does sound rather exciting and romantic?. I?m sure they too have those terrible days when they wish they could just stay in bed and let someone else take over their life that day! I often wonder, will my daughter end up like me? Will she share the same burdens? Or will peoples perceptions change? Will people accept issues and difficulties, rather than crossing the street because their best friend who just lost her husband was walking there? I find it crazy when someone trips or tells you bad news we say ?oh dear?, as if we are telling them ?get over it already? even when it?s just literally happened. People from other cultures tend to have a bit more courtesy and respect for that situation, instead of saying ?oh dear?, they say ?sorry?. It?s not that it was their fault but they feel genuinely sorry that the situation happened to that person. I for one would love to live in a more understanding community. Wouldn?t you? I?m sure my ramblings are making you depressed or bored. But I do not mean to cause such! I merely am trying to express some of the thoughts and questions in my head and however it seems, I am not depressed. I am genuinely happy and love my life and all the people in it. I just have many questions and don?t believe that things are as simple as they look. I don?t believe that women are all comfortable with what is expected of them. I don?t believe that our culture and society is functioning as it should, (more...)

Open Question: Even if Hamas fires rockets, why is israel killing children?
For all you who are ignorant and can't see past israels war crimes, think about this. Ok, you say hamas fires rockets correct. Well why then is Israel killing children- http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090108/ap_on_re_mi_ea/ml_palestinians_young_victims. Why is it all the civilians are dying. Is this not a war crime. And if you say that casualties are part of war, well there would be no citizen casualties if Israel would allow the civilians to escape the war zone, but they wont. they are keeping them in gaza as a concentration camp and killing them. Gaza is so densely populated. There are 2 million people in a tiny area, how can they not hide behind anything. there is no room to move. Maybe if Israel would allow the citizens to leave gaza and seek refuge, but isralel won't let innocent children and women leave. (more...)

Open Question: Do you think I should I tell my kids...?
So my Grandma called me yesterday and told me that the doctors have diagnosed her and told her she has 6-12 months to live. I am devastated by the news. My mom called last night and asked if I was going to tell my kids about what my grandma told me. My kids are 11, 8 and 7. My first thought was no. If I tell them they will worry and they won't even enjoy the time we do have with her. The doc. is not God, I mean she can still live for longer, maybe a few years. Well I was just wondering what do you wonderful parents think or what you would do? Also any suggestions of special things we could do for my great grandma? We won't get to see her much because, she lives about 2 hours away, and the doctor told her she can not be around any one sick, if she gets sick or any type of infection her body might not heal. With 3 kids one of them is always sick with a runny nose or something. Any suggestions would be helpful. (more...)

Open Question: Why is Obama proposing economic policies even more reckless and irresponsible than the New Deal?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090109/ap_on_go_pr_wh/obama_economy Barack Obama is proposing a new $800 billion "stimulus" to the economy of a bunch of government boondoggles. FDR's similar boondoggle, the New Deal (which, along with Hoover's interventionist policies, was responsible for prolonging the Recession of 1929-1930 until 1946, cost only $500 billion in today's dollars. Obama is proposing a recklessly irresponsible boondoggle that will turn this recession into the Greater Depression that sound economists have been predicting for the last few years (based upon their understanding of the intentions of politicians, the state of the economy, and the timeless laws of economics that governments throughout history have so tirelessly tried to repeal without any success). Even FDR was never as fanatical as Obama. Why couldn't we have elected a true statesman like Martin Van Buren or Grover Cleveland (both of whom resisted interventionist whims when faced with recessions created by the other party's reckless monetary policies and allowed those recessions to run their course and the economy to recover)? I'd be the admit that the Bush Republicans favor reckless economic policies as well. The Bush Republican coalition was a coalition of Neo-Cons and the Christian Right that never held any strong attachment to the free economy and which was primarily concerned with waging war and promoting morality. In fact, I advocate policies similar to that of Presidents Van Buren and Cleveland, both of whom were non-interventionist in foreign policy and socially liberal, as well as being non-interventionist in economics. Open Question: Why are some US based properties such cheap?
I am not living in USA at this moment, but I was born here so I like to know everything regarding my country, so...today I read an article: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Radical-cheap-1000-cnnm-14005833.html It says that the real estate market is falling, and the prices of some houses dropped to 2-3000 $ and even less. I want someone to try to explain me this matter. How is this possible? People lost their properties, having big debts to their banks, and lost their houses in this way? The second matter - how much must pay a simple US citizen to the IRS, anually, for a small property like this one: http://www.realtor.com/search/listingdetail.aspx?pg=53&srcnt=579&sid=64c595b959554c84a8702eeb66dc9566&fhcnt=23&loc=detroit&usrloc=detroit&ml=2&mnp=1000&mxp=3000&bd=3&bth=2&typ=3B&fhpg=5&lid=1103577306&lsn=521 Are the property taxes so big? The house from my last link, is located near to Beverly Hills and is priced only at 1350$. How is this possible? Open Question: Another horror remake, that is going to be incomparable to the original?
...just caught the trailer for the upcoming remake of "Last House on the Left", and I really have to say, it looks way too slick, to have the potential of being comparable to the raw, visceral, gritty and depraved original film. This is what made the original film so shocking...so much a film, where the viewer is disgusted and repulsed, yet unable to look away, at the horrific proceedings that occur in the story.... http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=51800 ...now, a mere three years ago, an independent filmmaker, named David DeFalco, came pretty damn close, if not right on target, as far as equaling the unswerving shock and power of director Wes Craven's original film, with a veritable "...House..." remake, called "Chaos"; it was so irreparable and unflinching in it's depiction of the original story, and definitely warrants the attention of those who might be interested in seeing a 'true' remake of Wes Craven's classic cult film.... (...a fan-constructed trailer of "Chaos", as the actual trailer seems to be inaccessable) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XP9HRl2oqE&feature=related http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaos_(2005_David_DeFalco_film) ...I can appreciate the fact that both Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham, who conceived of the original film, have a hand in the inception of this new incarnation (...and will probably be the only reason why I would entertain a viewing of the new film); but I am very hard pressed to imagine this new film, barely even beginning to hold a candle to the original. It's just not that easy to shock movie audiences in this manner, anymore, and the producers of "Chaos" appeared to have had the courage and the unflinching nerve to actually do that very thing.... ....I am curious as to what you fine folk out there, have to think about, in this regards.... Open Question: Has anyone seen these facts about how people voted in 2008?
Wilson Research Poll The 12 "Zogby" questions were duplicated, one on the Keating scandal was added for extra balance. The results from Obama voters were virtually IDENTICAL in both polls. Here are the highlights: 35 % of McCain voters got 10 or more of 13 questions correct. 18% of Obama voters got 10 or more of 13 questions correct. McCain voters knew which party controls congress by a 63-27 margin. Obama voters got the ?congressional control? question wrong by 43-41. Those that got "congressional control" correct voted 56-43 for McCain. Those that got "congressional control" wrong voted 65-35 for Obama. The poll also asked voters to name all the media sources from which they got information. Those ?exposed? to Fox News got "congressional control" correct 64-25 (+39) Those ?exposed? to CNN got ?congressional control? correct 48-38 (+10) Those ?exposed? to Network news got ?congressional control? correct 48-39 (+9) Those ?exposed? to print media got ?congressional control? correct 52-37 (+15) Those ?exposed? to MSNBC got ?congressional control? correct 55-35 (+20) Those ?exposed? to talk radio got ?congressional control? correct 61-29 (+32) Voters in the "South" had the best response rate on ?congressional control? (+22) Voters in the "Northeast" had the worst response rate on ?congressional control? (+9) Those ?exposed? to Fox News voted 70-29 for McCain. Those ?exposed? to CNN voted 63-37 for Obama. Those ?exposed? to MSNBC voted 73-26 for Obama. Those ?exposed? to network newscasts voted 62-37 for Obama. Those ?exposed? to national newspapers voted 64-36 for Obama. Those ?exposed? to talk radio voted 61-38 for McCain. Those that could associate Bill Ayers' name/story with Obama voted 52-48 for McCain (We added Ayers name to the "Zogby" question and it significantly increased the rate of correct response, indicating a very superficial grasp of the overall story). Those that knew Obama had made negative comments about ?coal power plants" voted 76-24 for McCain. Those that knew Obama had his opponents knocked off the ballot in his first campaign voted 66-34 for McCain. McCain voters did poorly (only 42% correct) on the Keating question and,in general, the voters did universally worse on questions where the negative information was about their candidate Women under 55 did worse than they might have by guessing on four of the thirteen questions, and yet 95% of them knew that Palin was the candidate with a pregnant teenage daughter. Even 95% of those in this demographic group who didn't know ?congressional control? got this question correct. Those ?exposed? to MSNBC ?scored? 90% correct on the three Palin questions (including an incredible 98% on the ?pregnant teenage daughter? question), while those not ?exposed? to MSNBC averaged 84% correct on those three questions.
