Securing Japan: Tokyo's Grand Strategy and the Future of East Asia (Cornell Studies in Security Affairs)
Securing Japan: Tokyo's Grand Strategy and the Future of East Asia (Cornell Studies in Security Affairs) For the past sixty years, the U.S. government has assumed that Japan's security policies would reinforce American interests in Asia. The political and military profile of Asia is changing rapidly, however. Korea's nuclear program, China's rise, and the relative decline of U.S. power have commanded strategic review in Tokyo just as these matters have in Washington. What is the next step for Japan's security policy? Will confluence with U.S. interests--and the alliance--survive intact? Will the policy be transformed? Or will Japan become more autonomous?

Richard J. Samuels demonstrates that over the last decade, a revisionist group of Japanese policymakers has consolidated power. The Koizumi government of the early 2000s took bold steps to position Japan's military to play a global security role. It left its successor, the Abe government, to further define and legitimate Japan's new grand strategy, a project well under way-and vigorously contested both at home and in the region.

Securing Japan begins by tracing the history of Japan's grand strategy--from the Meiji rulers, who recognized the intimate connection between economic success and military advance, to the Konoye consensus that led to Japan's defeat in World War II and the postwar compact with the United States. Samuels shows how the ideological connections across these wars and agreements help explain today's debate. He then explores Japan's recent strategic choices, arguing that Japan will ultimately strike a balance between national strength and national autonomy, a position that will allow it to exist securely without being either too dependent on the United States or too vulnerable to threats from China.

Samuels's insights into Japanese history, society, and politics have been honed over a distinguished career and enriched by interviews with policymakers and original archival research. Securing Japan is a definitive assessment of Japanese security policy and its implications for the future of East Asia.

Stopped at Stalingrad: The Luftwaffe and Hitler's Defeat in the East, 1942-1943 (Modern War Studies(Paper))
Stopped at Stalingrad: The Luftwaffe and Hitler's Defeat in the East, 1942-1943 (Modern War Studies(Paper)) By the time Hitler declared war on the Soviet Union in 1941, he knew that his military machine was running out of fuel. In response, he launched Operation Blau, a campaign designed to protect Nazi oilfields in Romania while securing new ones in the Caucasus. All that stood in the way was Stalingrad. Here, Joel Hayward chronicles Luftwaffe operations during that campaign, focusing on Hitler's use of the air force as a tactical rather than strategic weapon in close support of ground forces. He details the Luftwaffe's key role as "flying artillery", showing that the army relied on Luftwaffe support to a far greater degree than has been previously revealed and that its successes in the East occurred largely because of the effectiveness of that support. Hayward shows the poorly conceived strategies of Hitler, Goering and others in Berlin doomed the efforts of air commander Wolfram von Richthofen, a resolute leader attempting to come to grips with an increasingly impossible situation. By reconsidering the campaign in the light of a wider body of documentary sources and analyzing many previously ignored events, Hayward offers military historians and general readers a more complete understanding of the Battle of Stalingrad and its impact on World War II.

Darfur: A 21st Century Genocide, Third Edition (Crises in World Politics)
Darfur: A 21st Century Genocide, Third Edition (Crises in World Politics) Praise for the 2005 Edition--

"A passionate and highly readable account of the current tragedy that combines intimate knowledge of the region's history, politics, and sociology with a telling cynicism about the polite but ineffectual diplomatic efforts to end it. It is the best account available of the Darfur crisis."--Foreign Affairs

"Does the conflict in Darfur, however bloody, qualify as genocide? Or does the application of the word 'genocide' to Darfur make it harder to understand this conflict in its awful peculiarity? Is it possible that applying a generic label to Darfurian violence makes the task of stopping it harder? Or is questioning the label simply insensitive, implying that whatever has happened in Darfur isn't horrible enough to justify a claim on the world's conscience, and thus invite inaction or even the dismissal of Darfur altogether? These questions lie at the heart of a much-needed new book by Gerard Prunier. In Darfur: The Ambiguous Genocide, Prunier casts aside labels and lays bare the anatomy of the Darfur crisis, drawing on a mixture of history and journalism to produce the most important book of the year on any African subject."--Salon.com

"The emergency in Darfur in western Sudan is far from over, as Gérard Prunier points out in this comprehensive and authoritative book. . . . He concisely covers the history, the conflicts, and the players. . . . Darfur: The Ambiguous Genocide is essential for anyone wanting to learn about this complex conflict."--Library Journal

"If Darfuris are Muslim, what is their quarrel with the Islamic government in Khartoum? If they and the janjaweed-'evil horsemen'-driving them from their homes are both black, how can it be Arab versus African? If the Sudanese government is making peace with the south, why would it be risking that by waging war in the west? Above all, is it genocide? Gérard Prunier has the answers. An ethnographer and renowned Africa analyst, he turns on the evasions of Khartoum the uncompromising eye that dissected Hutu power excuses for the Rwanda genocide a decade ago."--The Guardian

Darfur: The Ambiguous Genocide explains what lies behind the conflict in Western Sudan, how it came about, why it is should not be oversimplified, and why it is so relevant to the future of Africa. As the world watches, governments decide if, when, and how to intervene, and international organizations struggle to distribute aid, Gérard Prunier's book provide crucial assistance. The third edition features a new chapter covering events through mid-2008.

Open Question: Christianity and Antisemitism. Any Christians/Jews wanna clarify?
So I'm browsing Youtube, looking at videos, when I come across one by a fellow by the name of Preacher717, a Christian Fundamentalist whose sole hobby appears to be spewing biblical verse at people outside of Strip Clubs, abortion clinics, left-wing protests, Mosques, parades, etc. This particular video was a protest against a bunch of Jews and Muslims who were together asking for peace at a rally in L.A. The guy who's speaking in this video is Reuben Israel, an antisemitic, Islamophobic moron who condemns Jews for "not believing in their messiah," and giving up land in Israel that "God gave you!" in accordance with UN peace plans... And then at the same time spews hate against Muslims for all being terrorists... But I digress. I'm going to link to the video at the bottom. My question is this. I saw these comments on this video. Preacher717, unsurprisingly, hasn't censored them. "TURNTOCHRIST (1 hour ago) yes I Agree but whats the american love affair with the jews? they are just as vile and going to hell, jews are not special people they also need to turn to Christ and repent. Jews insult and say vile things about Jesus Christ, Narrow is the way" "JeffTheDude777 (1 hour ago) 'whats the american love affair with the jews?' I dont really know. The only thing that comes to my mind is that we are allied with them. and maybe some of the points in this video- watch?v=1F870vi8VKU&feature=ch annel_page But I agree with your comment." I would've expected such vile statements, such despicably insulting comments, to have come from the mouth of David Duke, or someone posting at Stormfront.org. Here's the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m94Wycjry50 However, from Evangelical Christians? I guess I shouldn't be surprised, considering these people take the NT seriously, and by doing so, they include the vicious antisemitism enclosed in that naughty little book. Evangelicals, that is, people like these two troglodytes, make up the largest religious category in the United States, an astonishing 28%. Is America going to be the next Reich? Is Christian "support for Israel" and "love for the Jews" only go so far as using them to fulfill the prerequisite events in order for Jesus to return, to slaughter all Jews who haven't accepted his status as Lord? Now, I understand that this apocalyptic vision won't happen, but I also understand that the agitating that Christian Zionists perform, apparently on Israel's behalf, only exacerbates the Middle East situation, and eagerly supports Nuclear Strikes against Iran. These people are actively supporting a path that will likely kill millions, if not billions of innocents, and destroy Israel. It's the inevitable result of the noxious dogma that these people have embraced. So what say you, Evangelicals? Want to either correct these two? Or are you just going to admit that your love for the Jews is just simply a dogma, a conditional love, a love that is, for all practical purposes, a vile, thinly-veiled antisemitism. I want to see a clarification. The statement which "TURNTOCHRIST" is saying "Yes, I agree..." to is JeffTheDude777's comment that "Islam is evil." My point is, that there are many...in fact, too many Christians who read their Bibles and take it seriously, and through it find themselves holding a tremendously disrespectful, hateful, condemnatory stance against the Jewish people. Christianity is touted as perfect; that it's God reaching out to man, that it's divine, that Christ was perfect, that one who is saved in Christ has the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Yet, we see many Christians admitting that they are no more or less susceptible to being human than anyone else; Christianity doesn't make anyone a better person...And in cases such as those above, it makes you worse. red_head You accuse me of generalizing, and yet, you simply assume I haven't read the Bible. The NT is pretty antisemitic. Not completely, but if one takes it to be the Word of God, they're going to carry antisemitism with it. It's one thing to write an antisemitic book. It's another to claim that book is inerrant, and from God, and thus make that antisemitism a virtue condoned by God himself. St. Augustine. Martin Luther. Jean Calvin. You won't argue these men didn't read their Bibles. Yet, they wrote some of the most antisemitic things imaginable. That's not up for debate. Who are you to say the NT isn't antisemitic? It has produced accusations of Christ-killers, it has been used to justify pogroms, inquisitions, crusades, and blood libels. When I see a Christian such as yourself, red_head, who does not hate the Jews, I see someone whose love for the Jews is something they possess in SPITE of their Christianity. Not because of it. http://www.messiahtruth.com/anti.html Check it out. A little update. Another Christian chimed in...The odds that this is an isolated opinion among Christians are dwindling... Proverbs1x26 (1 hour ago) Jew-worship is rooted in the false heretical Scofield Reference Bible. The actual Bible is quite clear on the false Jewish religion: "the Jews...who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men...the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost." (1 Thess 2:15) They're not God's chosen anymore, we are: "The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof" (Mt 21:43) (more...)

Open Question: USA are the real terrorist!! What do you think?
For all you USA pride freaks out there don't **** me yet and you should know, after a little research and thinking haven;t you realized that US are the biggest crooks acting police? They raped Iraq for the oil and everyone knows that. GBush made everyone xenophobic to muslims so he can just do that. He supports Taiwan so he US can annoy China because it is a strong competition. The whole "free tibet" bullcrap campaign was funded by the CIA to cause upheavel and hate for China around the world hoping to weaken it but that failed. Back in the 80's American fighter planes deliberately try to bother the Chinese by flying over their airspace on purpose and when the CHinese got pissed they shot the American planes down they accused the chinese of starting war?!? In Vietnam did they do much? No and they planned not to because all they wanted was use Vietnam as an excuse for military testing ground disregarding millions of human lifes. Oh yea back in ww2 the US started the Morgenthau Plan which was to starve millions of Germans, furthurmore US supplied weapons to Indonesia which killed thousands of civilians in East Timor. Not to mention human rights which they killed literally genocided millions of Natives Indians!! I got heaps more that tive researched but USA is just the biggest criminals and i really know how countries such as N Korea, Cuba and others feel about america. Land of the Free? Democracy my balls! Open Question: Why shouldn't anyone kill themselves?
I'm not planning to, but philosophically I can justify it. Everything forwards and back, north and south, east and west, up and down, sane and insane, might as well be reversed. Who can know? Truth itself has been turned on its head?it no longer exists. ?Meaning? and ?knowledge? become an artificial creation?a fictional composition of language for the sake of human utility, nothing to do with ?reality? or not ?reality.? For how can anyone say there is such a thing as meaning inherent to reality itself? No one can say anything about it without being untrue; ?for all facts are but interpretations? (quote from Nietzsche)?even that statement is one. An abyss is in all directions (even I am a part of it) and only when humans (as if we know reality itself) try to solidify wisps of nothing, putting their faith in it, does anything (or is it really nothing) come about?all based on nothing. Going back to the fundamental origins, all ?truths? require a priori statements, undoubtable axioms?but there are no undoubtable axioms. Everything is subject to question. Even so-called ?obvious? conclusions are really a self-deception intended to make things easier for oneself; a closing of the eyes when the thoughts swirl too fast for one to see. All ?truths? are based on necessary ?falseness.? So then, ?truth? is just a human creation for humans to escape nihilism?an intentional deception, like all of ?thought??a oversimplication and lying to make the world intelligible to just the amount that we want?a matter of utility for the biased preservation of a certain species of life, whose worth itself up for questioning. I've noticed that hardly anyone addressed the philosophical issue. Telling me your prejudices to life does not address the philosophical issue. Following this way of thinking, whether if someone should kill themselves or not is indefinite, which pretty much leaves the answer to the question to how you lean one side or the other. Although, of course, that is not my final answer. (more...)

Why are the Reconquistas planning tantrum in Bay Area for fair and humane immigration laws, when we already have fair and humane immigration laws as say compared to Mexico fair and humane immigration laws and we already took in up to 12 millions illegals from north of America, already so why the tantrum from the Reconquistas ?SAN JOSE, Calif. Resolved Question: Bay area ferry transit, yes/no?
The Bay Area is embarking on an ambitious new ferry transit scheme... http://www.watertransit.org http://www.mercurynews.com/breakingnews/ci_11363165 Commuters in Richmond, Berkeley, Antioch, Hercules, Martinez and Redwood City could be hopping 31 new ferries to San Francisco by the end of the decade. A planned eight-mile ferry service between Oakland's Jack London Square and South San Francisco is expected to begin in late 2010, after a new terminal is built at Oyster Point in South San Francisco. Additionally, co. Environmental planning has begun on proposals for service from Richmond to San Francisco and from Martinez and Antioch to San Francisco. Planning has not begun on three other proposed ferry routes ? from Redwood City to San Francisco and the East Bay; from Hercules to San Francisco; and from San Francisco to Treasure Island. People are hoping to make ferry transit as popular as BART/freeways in moving people between various parts of the Bay Area and downtown San Francisco. While ferries may not be as efficient as buses, they are without a doubt more romantic and enjoyable... Do you support this broad effort to increase Bay area water transit? (more...)
