Yearning for the Land: A Search for the Importance of Place What does landscape mean to us? How does it shape our sense of “rootedness” to place and connection to community? Can that sense and that connection enrich us in the same manner as having knowledge of our familial lineage? Landscape historian John Warfield Simpson sets out to answer these questions by following the journey of the great conservationist John Muir from his homeland along the North Sea coast in East Lothian County, Scotland, to his family’s adopted home in the fields and forests of Marquette County, Wisconsin. Along the way he discovers much about himself; and we, in turn, can learn much about ourselves.

In 1849 the Muirs immigrated from East Lothian to the wilds of central Wisconsin in search of religious and economic opportunity. What concept of land did they and millions of others from the Old World leave behind, and what did they find in their New World homes? Simpson physically retraces the Muirs’ journey, as he delves into the meaning and importance of place. He speaks with estate owners and tenant farmers in Scotland who have centuries-long ties to the land they own or work; to Wisconsin farmers for whom one hundred years measures a profound connection to place; and to Native Americans working to reclaim the land they lost to white pioneers like the Muirs and to the author’s own Scottish ancestors. This is what wikipedia says on the Scottish mafia: The Scottish mafia, tartan mafia or Scottish Raj, is a pejorative term used by English nationalists for a group of Scottish Labour Party politicians and broadcasters who they believe have undue influence over the governance of England. The term is occasionally used in the UK press and in parliamentary debates. References to a Scottish mafia are based on the perceived over-representation of Scottish Members of Parliament (MPs) in senior government posts (four cabinet ministers out of twenty four) and on the constitutional arrangements which give them a say in English affairs whilst denying English MPs and Scottish Westminster MPs a say in some Scottish affairs. The latter is known as the West Lothian question. The 'Scottish raj' is seen to be a distinctively Labour - and, to a lesser extent - Liberal Democrat phenomenon, as the Celtic fringe and North of England have always seen strong support for these parties, whereas Conservative support is traditionally based in the South East of England. Resolved Question: I want to move to a village in the UK. Any recommendations?
We currently live in a busy town in East Lothian, Scotland but we would like to move to a quiet village somewhere in Scotland (or maybe even England if we get a house cheaper?) I want a good school for my son (he will be starting school in 5 years time so plenty time to think about this) We arent loaded so we will move anywhere that isnt too expensive, as long as its nice! Resolved Question: used wheelchair?
I am looking for an old wheelchair for a friend who has a shop with steps, so people who have scooters can go in back door and use wheelchair to get about shop. In East Lothian in Scotland Not possible to have a ramp. Health and safety people have been in and are quite happy with wheelchair. Steps at front door are outside the building and ramp would need to cover more than half the pavement. Inside steps, there is 2. The shop is large and I feel that it is acceptable to have wheelchair for those people who can get up 2 steps with assistance. Not possible to remove steps, front door of shop is at least 10 feet above pavement level, and 10 feet wide. A ramp woud have to stretch 1/2 way across road. .Ramp has to be at least 1in3 so wheelchair can be pushed up so it would at least 30 feet long!!!!!! (more...)
