Mitigating Shore Erosion along Sheltered Coasts
Mitigating Shore Erosion along Sheltered Coasts Like ocean beaches, sheltered coastal areas experience land loss from erosion and sea level rise. In response, property owners often install hard structures such as bulkheads as a way to prevent further erosion, but these structures cause changes in the coastal environment that alter landscapes, reduce public access and recreational opportunities, diminish natural habitats, and harm species that depend on these habitats for shelter and food. "Mitigating Shore Erosion Along Sheltered Coasts" recommends coastal planning efforts and permitting policies to encourage landowners to use erosion control alternatives that help retain the natural features of coastal shorelines.

Resolved Question: Don't "Terrorists" by definition: Attack Civilians (Bomb Schools, Ambulances, UN Convoys, Houses, Children)?
"After days of intense haggling, the Security Council passed a resolution urging an "immediate, durable and fully respected cease-fire," and for Israel to withdraw from Gaza after a 14-day air-and-ground offensive. The United States abstained... Moments before the resolution was passed, Israeli warplanes dropped bombs on areas on the outskirts of Gaza, the main city in the north of the coastal strip. There was no immediate reaction from Israeli officials after the Security Council vote, but Israel had opposed the idea of a binding resolution. Israel's military commanders are keen to pursue the ground offensive and secure more gains. On Thursday, ambulance workers ventured onto the battlefield to gather decomposing bodies from the rubble. Hamas officials said the Palestinian death toll had risen to 765, of whom more than a third were children." http://uk.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUKLS69391620090109 "The civilian death toll in Gaza increased dramatically today, with reports of more than 40 Palestinians killed after missiles exploded outside a UN school where hundreds of people were sheltering from the continuing Israeli offensive." http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jan/06/gaza-israel-death-un Who are the "Terrorists" again? seems everybody buys the propaganda...would Hamas even exist if Israel had abided by U.N. Open Question: Survivor: Winner's Edition (Episode 7)?
This is where the Yahoo Community gets to decide who will win Survivor: Winner's Edition. Last time the Legata tribe lost immunity. Danni, Aras, Vecepia, and Tina voted for Todd. Todd and Richard voted for Aras, and Chris voted for Vecepia. Todd was the 6th person voted off the island. Voted off so far: Ethan, Bob, Rupert, Tom, Amber, Todd. When Legata came back to camp, Richard was calm. Chris was shocked, and Danni was the new power player. The next day Jeff announced that their would be no immunity challenge. Because both tribes will be going to tribal council. The tribes are shocked. So head on back to camp. At Legata Richard and Chris are on the outs. However Richard talks to Vecepia and Tina about flipping. They aren't very thrilled about the idea. So going into tribal council the alliances are (Danni/Vecepia/Tina/Aras) with (Chris/Rich) on the outside. So will Vecepia and Tina get payback for the shampoo, or will they target the original winner of Survivor. Back at Sukinni things are more interesting. Parv and Jenna are still tight. Yul and Brian are still tight. However Earl and Sandra are up in the air. Nobody knows that Jenna has the Real Hidden Immunity Idol. Earl decides that maybe their is more than one and he looks in her bag. While he is looking Jenna and Parvati walk in the shelter. "Uhhhhh" Earl says. He didn't see anything because Jenna had hid it in a bush. However they want him gone because they see he's a snoop. So he goes to Brian and Yul and says he will vote out one of the girls. Sandra still doesn't know who she's voting for as tribal council comes around. So will she go with the guys and vote Jenna or Parvati out, or will she join with the girls and force a tie. Jenna will be bringing her idol to tribal council, but that doesn't mean she has to use it. So who will be voted off the island? (more...)

Resolved Question: Would I get in lots of legal trouble if I did this?
I recently broke up with my long term partner and I'm trying to get a council home for my daughter and I (by the way before I get lots of answers saying why don't you get a job and get your own place, I do have a job as a teacher and I'm 22). I know that I'm going to get a few people saying I should be pleased to get what I get etc, but that's not what I'm asking about. I don't want to get into trouble, but do you think that I would get into trouble if I put some notes into some local houses and said that I would give £1000 if someone transferred the house to my name if someone in that house was thinking of moving, or had to go into sheltered accommodation and it was a council house. I don't want to live in a dodgy tower block, and I will do anything to make sure that my daughter and I have a good life. But would I be in legal trouble? Thanks. £1000 isn't even enough to put down a deposit on a flat, and I can't fund monthly payments for a flat on a teachers starters salary. (more...)

Resolved Question: How would you help the homeless?
This is my thoughts on how to help them. (These ideas are just rough and not well thought out, but it could be the basis of a start to give back some dignity and help some get a second chance to get back on their feet) Why not set up some large warehouses spread around the towns and suburbs with cubicles and amenities where they can call home. Now they are not homeless. Doing this would not cost a fortune because there are a lot of empty warehouses around and it would probably be cheaper to house people than manage the trouble they find themselves in sleeping in parks and subways etc. A management system is put in place by local councils to supply menial work like gardening, cleaning parks, mowing, graffitti removal etc. This work could be divided out between the members living there, after a small rent is deducted to allow for electricity and food. Local businesses could also contract members to work casual for them in piece-work situations during busy periods. this would give folk a new way of getting and keeping a full time position should they perform well and impress a potential employer. It would be like each town would have a labour source to do stuff. Even if you wanted your home painted or something, you could just ring the manager and they would send a crew with painting experience around. The guys who work.... get better accomodation than the guys who bludge and refuse work, and the eager folk that prove themselves get offered a grant to start their own small business after a 2 year assessment period. If shelters like this were set up around the country, everyone would have somewhere to call 'home' (like a halfway house to get back on their feet). The folk who don't take part and continue to beg and sleep in the park anyway, get picked up and put in a boot camp to dry out and returned to a shelter to try again. Tough love, I know, but there are no free lunches these days. What are your thoughts? (more...)

Resolved Question: If I told you this, what would you think of me?
If I told you that; I volunteer at least once a week (homeless shelters, I make blankets for cancer patients, running marathons to benefit good causes, retirement homes, etc.) I'm an active member in my church. I take piano lessons. I have a serious part-time job. I babysit my cousin a few hours a week. I'm on the honor roll at school, I'm in the Interact club, a member of PALS, on student council, and in treble choir. I run cross country and I swim. what would you think of me? As in, do I look like an appealing person? To date, to be friends with, for college, anything. (more...)

Voting Question: Chances at Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, University of Chicago?
These are the some of the schools I'm applying to. Of course, I have some other schools, and some safeties, but I was wondering what my chances are for these. Here's my HS profile: Have taken the most rigorous roster offered at my school since freshman year Currently in IB program, but taking AP courses at the same time (basically, at our school, if you're in IB, you're also considered an AP student, and have to take the AP exams too - right now, i'm taking AP calc, AP physics, AP english, AP french 5, AP U.S. history, and at the same time, they're IB too, so I also take TOK) Rank = 1/323ish (its around 323, but i'm not too sure of the exact number) ACT score = 26 (I know this sucks; idk what happened here, but I retook it, and hopefully, I did better) Activities: Varisity Volleyball - 3years (senoir year was one of the captains) National Honor Society - 11th and 12th grade French Club - Secretary Debate team Brain Bee - 2 years Model United Nations - 3 years Newspaper Committee Principal's Council Advisory Veteran's History project - 2 years Judged middle school science fair Took 1 class at a community college nearby last summer, and I'm scheduled to take 3 more classes this spring Been in the honor roll since freshman year Recieved recognition by Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz for the Veterans History Project Honorable Mention for all public in Volleyball Selected and recieved an award at the National Language Convention Recieved a couple of "best of" awards in junior and sophomore year (basically, these awards recognize you as the best in your class in that particular subject) Volunteer Work: Went on Whosoever Gospel Mission Trip and cleaned down the burned building which was used as shelter for some people with few resources Volunteered at a Library nearby for about 30 hours Volunteered at the High School Exposition, where I represented my high school Went on the Multiple Sclerosis Walk Will be volunteering soon (in about a week) at a nearby hospital That's really all I can remember right now. I've also been in math competitions, but I don't think that counts. My ACT scores are horrible. I really don't know what happened there; I retook them, and hopefully I did better. But, do i have any chances at any of these schools? Please be honest. I really appreciate any help. Thanks a lot! GPA - 4.0 I'm not exactly sure what it is weighted, but I only have A's on my transcript. (more...)

Resolved Question: Survivor: All-Stars 2 (Part 1)?
Day 1: The Dasterro Tribe arrives at their camp. We are in the rural hills of Chile. Immediately, Paschal and Neleh (Best Buds in Marquesas) reunite. Ken and Sugar hug as well. However, Courtney and Denise are another story. ?Will I be stuck with that accent for another month?? Courtney asks during a confessional. Erik is as excited to see Colby as he was Ozzy in Micronesia. The two go off looking for wood. ?It?s been ten minutes and the two boy scouts are already earning merit badges.? says Colleen. Denise still has her mullet ponytail thing?Neleh and Paschal are somewhat withdrawn, as they dislike everyone except Colby. ?I watched their seasons,? says Neleh, ?I don?t like ?em.? Sugar and Ken have reconciled since Gabon. When Kenny forgives Sugar, she begins to cry. Erik and Colby return and begin to build a shelter with the help of Kenny, Denise, Neleh, and Pashcal. Sugar, Courtney, and Colleen go off to ?gather fruit.? They talk about strategy. Sugar says she can get Kenny on her side. Courtney says she can get Denise. Along with Colleen, this 5-member alliance could dominate?in theory. There are problems. The members are weak and the tribe would lose challenges. It was just an idea thrown out there but it would get them through Tribal Councils. Now for your part: You?ve just seen Dasterro?s first day. You can now share any thoughts so far. Also, will this potential 5-member alliance of Courtney, Denise, Colleen, Sugar, and Ken be successful? Ozzy is NOT in the season. His name is mentioned but he is NOT in the game. (more...)

Resolved Question: Racism? What is racism? Is this racist?
I honestly do not think im a racist person. In the very slightest. However does feeling angry about these things make me racist? That my sister gets no help at her school for her dyslexia and learning difficulties, yet the school fund for 10 hours of english language lessons every week for foreign students? That the local community center was knocked down. A place that hosted so many events, the yearly bloody donations, the monthly council committy, the weekly youth center, the annual xmas dinner for the elderly, ever a shelter for flood victims, Was bulldozed to make way for a mosque? That our next door neighbour, an elderly woman, whose husband died recently was moved out of her council home to make way for an immigrant family. They worked hard all their life, plunged all their money into making the house their own, her husband dies, and she is now in a 1 bedroom flat! My aunt gets £30.00 a week for being a carer to her disabled child. Yet an young asylum seeker in my school was boasting how his family get £400+ a week for doing nothing! I could go on .... does being angry make me racist? I have lots of multi cultured friends! I just thought for once id post the same question in different categories to see how responses differ just depending on where a question is posted. All the answers are great. Nothing to do with the answer there brilliant. Just my own curiosity. Yes her moving out was connected. They didnt want her to stay in the 2 bedroom house when it was only her. There were more needy families apparently. (more...)
