HISTORY OF PHOTOCHROM PRINTS

The photochrom process was initially developed in Switzerland and was spelled without an "e", so the correct original spelling was actually "photochrom". Once the process was introduced in America, the "e" was added to aid pronunciation. A Photochrom is a color photo lithograph, produced from a black-and-white negative. The final prints were created using different color impressions from multiple lithographic stones. The stones used by the publisher Detroit Photographic Company were imported from Bavaria and coated with a special Syrian 'asphaltum' substance that would be chemically sensitized to light, put in contact with a photographic negative, exposed to the sun for up to several hours, then "developed" in oils of turpentine. A separate stone would be made for each color to be used. A minimum of four stones and as many as fourteen stones might be used for a given image.

50 Ways to Improve Women's Lives: The Essential Women's Guide for Achieving Equality, Health, and Success (Inner Ocean Action Guide)
50 Ways to Improve Women's Lives: The Essential Women's Guide for Achieving Equality, Health, and Success (Inner Ocean Action Guide) A powerful new call-to-action series was launched with the New York Times bestselling "MoveOn's 50 Ways to Love Your Country." The second book in the series, "50 Ways to Improve Women's Lives," written by nationally recognized women, is poised to again become an instrument for change and reinvigorate a movement. "50 Ways to Improve Women's Lives" parlays the collective expertise of the National Council of Women's Organizations' 200 member organizations - which include Planned Parenthood, NOW, League of Women Voters, CodePink, the AAUW, National Council of Negro Women, and the YWCA - and features 50 personal, inspiring essays with "Helping Ourselves" and "Call-to-Action" sidebars. Covering subjects as diverse as pay equity, reproductive health, childcare, racism, and women in leadership, the book addresses topics that affect women (and all of us!) on a personal and political level, and provides readers with ways to move beyond old arguments and turn inspiration into action.

Contributors include Madeleine Albright, Gloria Feldt, Kim Gandy, Patricia Ireland, Eleanor Smeal, Congresswomen Schakowsky, Maloney, Ros-Lehtinen, and Feinstein, and many others.

The Meanings of Timbuktu
The Meanings of Timbuktu
Contradicting the popular notion that African history survived only through the oral tradition, this collection of essays examines the rich legacy of written history on the continent, specifically in Timbuktu. It brings together articles written by a number of leading international scholars from Europe, the United States, and several African countries, covering a wide range of areas in the study of Timbuktu, from archaeology and literature to the intellectual life, libraries, and private collections in Timbuktu and West Africa.

Resolved Question: Good points for making the case for library facilities bond?
Our town has grown from about 6K to 24K in recent years and we have outgrown our current library facilities. We have a bond coming up which has to cover only a portion of the town's wish list. While the town council seems inclined to put building a new library near the top of the list, a bond committee left the library off their final recommendation. What are some good points to make in favor of the library facilities at the final town council bond review public meeting? I have a number I made at an earlier review, but would love some fresh ideas. Thanks! Unfortunately, some of the detractors on the bond committee are concerned the library has become a source of babysitting, because of the large number of after school youth. (You'd think having a kid in the library learning would be preferable to having them in a gang or being a couch potato.) (more...)

Could I get into an Ivy League (preferably Harvard, Yale, Penn State, Dartmouth), Duke, Wake Forest, UNC-Chapel Hill, Western Carolina U, or Lenoir-Rhyne U? Any feedback at all is greatly appreciated. Thanks! I am not necessarily interested in attending an Ivy League institution. I simply asked about my chances of acceptance to an Ivy in order to compare them to what institutions I am genuinely interested in attending: Lenoir-Rhyne University, Brevard College, UNC-Asheville, UNC-Chapel Hill (perhaps), etcetera. I apologize for not being clearer. I scored a III on all standardized EOCs except for the computer test, upon which I scored a IV. (more...)

Resolved Question: What are my chances at admission?
I apologize for the length of the post, but cutting to the chase, here is my profile. SAT- 2330 SAT IIs: US History - 770 Literature - 710 Math II - 710 Spanish with Listening - 750 National Merit Semifinalist with 220 on PSAT, and an AP Scholar with Honors, with 5s on the AP English Language, Spanish Language, Calculus AB, and US History. I have a weighted 5.1 GPA, 4.0 unweighted. I am currently enrolled in all AP classes and will be taking 7 AP exams in May (English Literature, Spanish Literature, Latin Literature, Calculus BC, Biology, US Government, and Microeconomics). I have taken 7 courses at my community college with an A in each. I am ranked 3rd in my class but that will likely rise to 1st or 2nd when this semester ends. I am worried about whether my extracurriculars are insufficient. I am a member of Link Crew, Key Club and NHS, a regular volunteer at the local library and children's museum. I have volunteered at a variety of other organizations, from soup kitchens to the YMCA. I am Secretary of the California Scholarship Federation and my district Youth Advisory Council, and was an officer and founding member of my school arts magazine. Language is my forte so I am very confident in terms of my essays. It is my extracurriculars that really have me worried. I am applying to Stanford, Harvard, Cornell, UPenn, Washington University in St. Louis, Duke, and Notre Dame. Please offer any wisdom as to my chances of admission at any of the above, preferably if you yourself have been admitted there or have any special knowledge as to the admissions processes at these schools. Thank you very much for your responses! (more...)

Voting Question: Chances at entering NYU?
I want to enter NYU early decision and study journalism. It's been my dream since Grade 8, but I'm not sure if I can get in. Here are my stats: - Grade 11, studying in Toronto, Canada - female Asian - did bad in Grade 9 and 10 marks - current marks are fair, overall average is 76% (we don't do the GPA system in Canada) - currently studying for SATs, both Reasoning and Subjects (English Literature and World History) - extracurricular activities: exec. reporter for school reporter (just had all 5 articles published for fall issue; very unusual for school paper), Assistant Stage Manager for school Christmas show, current member of PACE (Performing Arts Council Executive; we organize drama-related events), current member of school environment club, secondary lead in this year's school play (Edith in The Women), stage crew for school play in Grade 10 - just completed 60 hours of volunteer work in library (Ontario system asked for 40 hours) - currently searching for a job - our school don't offer AP or Honors courses, as most of the courses are either U (university), M (university/college), or C (college). The courses I'm taking are mostly U and M courses As well, I learned that in order to enter NYU from Ontario, you must earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. I completed all of the requirements, and I'm about to earn it when I graduate, as I only have 7 credits left to earn. So, do I have a chance? If anyone's unsure about the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, here's more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario_Secondary_School_Diploma (more...)

Voting Question: Chances at Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, University of Chicago?
These are the some of the schools I'm applying to. Of course, I have some other schools, and some safeties, but I was wondering what my chances are for these. Here's my HS profile: Have taken the most rigorous roster offered at my school since freshman year Currently in IB program, but taking AP courses at the same time (basically, at our school, if you're in IB, you're also considered an AP student, and have to take the AP exams too - right now, i'm taking AP calc, AP physics, AP english, AP french 5, AP U.S. history, and at the same time, they're IB too, so I also take TOK) Rank = 1/323ish (its around 323, but i'm not too sure of the exact number) ACT score = 26 (I know this sucks; idk what happened here, but I retook it, and hopefully, I did better) Activities: Varisity Volleyball - 3years (senoir year was one of the captains) National Honor Society - 11th and 12th grade French Club - Secretary Debate team Brain Bee - 2 years Model United Nations - 3 years Newspaper Committee Principal's Council Advisory Veteran's History project - 2 years Judged middle school science fair Took 1 class at a community college nearby last summer, and I'm scheduled to take 3 more classes this spring Been in the honor roll since freshman year Recieved recognition by Congresswoman Allyson Schwartz for the Veterans History Project Honorable Mention for all public in Volleyball Selected and recieved an award at the National Language Convention Recieved a couple of "best of" awards in junior and sophomore year (basically, these awards recognize you as the best in your class in that particular subject) Volunteer Work: Went on Whosoever Gospel Mission Trip and cleaned down the burned building which was used as shelter for some people with few resources Volunteered at a Library nearby for about 30 hours Volunteered at the High School Exposition, where I represented my high school Went on the Multiple Sclerosis Walk Will be volunteering soon (in about a week) at a nearby hospital That's really all I can remember right now. I've also been in math competitions, but I don't think that counts. My ACT scores are horrible. I really don't know what happened there; I retook them, and hopefully I did better. But, do i have any chances at any of these schools? Please be honest. I really appreciate any help. Thanks a lot! GPA - 4.0 I'm not exactly sure what it is weighted, but I only have A's on my transcript. (more...)
