Open Question: Study In London - Finance Worries?
Hey I'm applying to study a Foundation in Styling and Photography at the London College of Fashion in Sep 2009. I'm 17, have a good job (earn close to £500 a month), and I'm completing a BTEC National Diploma in Art & Design. What are my chances of getting in? I'm awful with money, and haven't saved a penny yet (oops!). I'm in a single-parent family (parent doesn't earn much at all.... definitely below the average), living in an ex-council house in N.Ireland. I don't know if I can afford to follow my dream and go to the best fashion college in the UK. What sort of loan would I be able to get? Any other money sources? How do I find accommodation? (Zone 1 or 2 ideally) It's really starting to upset me, I have no parental support, Mum thinks my ideas are ridiculous.... She keeps claiming I will never afford it, and I shouldn't bother.... PLEASE HELP!!! (more...)

Resolved Question: How to build The Ark in Britain?
In the year 2009 the Lord came unto Noah, who was now living in England and said, ?Once again, the earth has become wicked and over populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me. Build another ark and save two of everything along with a few good humans?. He gave Noah the CAD drawings, saying, ?You have 6 months to build the Ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights? Six months later, the lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard but no Ark. Noah! He roared, I?m about to start the rain! Where is the Ark? ?Forgive me lord,? begged Noah, ?but things have changed. I needed Building Regulations Approval and I?ve been arguing with the Fire Brigade about the need for a sprinkler system. My neighbours claim that I should have obtained Planning Permission for building the Ark in my garden because it is a development site, even though in my view it is a temporary structure. We had to then go to appeal to the Secretary of State for a decision. The he Department of Transport demanded a bond to be posted for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions to clear the passage for the Arks move to the sea. I told them that the sea would be coming to us but they would hear nothing of it. Getting wood was another problem. All the decent trees have Tree Preservation Orders on them and we live in a site of Special Scientific Interest set up in order to protect the spotted owl. I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls ? but no go! When I started gathering the animals, the RSPCA sued me. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodation was too restrictive, and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space. Then the County Council, the Environment Agency and the Rivers Authority ruled that I couldn?t build the Ark until they had conducted an environmental impact study on your proposed flood. I?m still trying to resolve a complaint with the Equal Opportunities Commission on how many disabled carpenters I?m supposed to hire for my building team. The Trades Unions say I can?t use my sons. They insist I have to hire only accredited workers with Ark building experience. To make matters worse, Customs and Excise seized all my assets, claiming I?m trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species. So, forgive me lord but it will take at least 10 years for me to finish this Ark.? Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine, and a rainbow stretched across the sky. Noah looked up in wonder and asked, ?You mean you?re not going to destroy the world?? ?No?, said the lord, ?The British Government beat me to it?. (more...)

Resolved Question: Would I get in lots of legal trouble if I did this?
I recently broke up with my long term partner and I'm trying to get a council home for my daughter and I (by the way before I get lots of answers saying why don't you get a job and get your own place, I do have a job as a teacher and I'm 22). I know that I'm going to get a few people saying I should be pleased to get what I get etc, but that's not what I'm asking about. I don't want to get into trouble, but do you think that I would get into trouble if I put some notes into some local houses and said that I would give £1000 if someone transferred the house to my name if someone in that house was thinking of moving, or had to go into sheltered accommodation and it was a council house. I don't want to live in a dodgy tower block, and I will do anything to make sure that my daughter and I have a good life. But would I be in legal trouble? Thanks. £1000 isn't even enough to put down a deposit on a flat, and I can't fund monthly payments for a flat on a teachers starters salary. (more...)

Resolved Question: My partner and i split after 3 years....I still love her?
I have know my ex partner for about 7 years as friends. The night my ex wife told me she was in love with someone else, we bumped into each other in a bar. When I told her about the now ex wife. she was great and said try and work it out,if not call me. Long story short we got together. I was 47 she was 34. My ex wife couldn't have children which she told me before we got married. now ex girlfriend had two daughters aged 14,16 and was in a lot of debt. After 3 months, she had told me her ring size etc. Also she asked me why I had never had children. She was due to have a sterilization. We made love often and she got pregnant. She didn't carry the child and had the op. Over the next two years we got on great. Had loads of holidays with her 2 girls. She kept on about us moving in together. Much that I wanted to, after my first marriage I was very hesitant. Also she lived in cheap council accommodation. I did think, if things went wrong I would be ok, but her and the girls would be in trouble. Moving forward to this year.... She has been very busy with work. Been promoted. More money etc. Had a great holiday in April with the girls. She was very busy/tired in June and said she wanted a break in July. Still friends and would go out for a meal once a month. In August she told me that she had met someone else. She has now given up her council house and has moved in with him. I know he beat his last girlfriend up! She is a strong woman, i know she would do anything to protect the girls. How do i tell her to go careful with him, without sounding that i want her back. (yes i know I do, but If i have to lose her, i still want her and the girls safe) I know her, and what ever I say, she will protect the one she loves. (more...)

Resolved Question: Need help with council housing?
My husband and I have recently spilt and I am currently in army accommodation, however before long I will be given 3months to move out. I cannot afford to rent privately so that is not an option. So what should I do? I have no where to go, would the council help to rehouse me? We have no children together and no savings. Also will the council take into consideration that I have mental health problems? I'm guessing I would need to stay in a hostel for a while until they find me somewhere but will I ever get a place due to the fact I'm not 16 with three children???? I hate that I'll be penalised just because I tried to do things the right way around. Can any one give me some advise or has any one been in a similar situation? if so what happened? sisterofthedarkmoon - I KNOW that these people get housed! I know a ton of youngsters with children who get housed pretty quickly, why should I not be able to have a council home? I work, I always have done, I pay my taxes, I'm an honest law abiding citizan - seems to me you either have to be a drug addict fresh from prison or a child thats having children to be housed... you may think I'm bitter and you'd be right in thinking so, I'm tired of paying for these scroungers and yet I get no help whatsoever. Yep British Citizen and never lived abroad..... (more...)

Resolved Question: Confused about student accommodation for next year [UK]?
Hey Well, we're told to start putting our names down for accommodation December/January at the latest for September '09 (I'm a first year) but I have no idea what I'll be doing then? When would you have to be certain about what you're doing? Accommodation is usually gone by March so does that mean putting down a deposit? The only 1 student person I'd want to share with is thinking about commuting next year and houses are supposed to comprise of 4-6 people. If i was wanting to get a 1 bed flat with my non-student boyfriend how would that work? Would we just apply for non-student accommodation and I'd be council tax exempt? When would we start looking for that? (more...)
