HISTORY OF PHOTOCHROM PRINTS

The photochrom process was initially developed in Switzerland and was spelled without an "e", so the correct original spelling was actually "photochrom". Once the process was introduced in America, the "e" was added to aid pronunciation. A Photochrom is a color photo lithograph, produced from a black-and-white negative. The final prints were created using different color impressions from multiple lithographic stones. The stones used by the publisher Detroit Photographic Company were imported from Bavaria and coated with a special Syrian 'asphaltum' substance that would be chemically sensitized to light, put in contact with a photographic negative, exposed to the sun for up to several hours, then "developed" in oils of turpentine. A separate stone would be made for each color to be used. A minimum of four stones and as many as fourteen stones might be used for a given image.

Open Question: How much would a month long holiday to the US cost?
I plan to fly to LA, and travel cross-country by coach and train through the Southwest, South and up the east to Boston before flying back to LA and then back home to Australia. I plan to stay in fairly affordable accommodation, and don't mind staying in hostels, camping etc. I haven't calculated or consulted a travel agent or anything, and just wonder roughly how much I would need not including airfare if I were to go for a month-long, self-guided cross country tour of the States. Thanks. (more...)

Resolved Question: Wanted to take a trip to Pakistan and needed some advice?
Hey, So, i wanted to head to Pakistan and visit a friend of mine in Lahore. I wanted to stay for roughly two weeks and didn't want to spend a ton on airfare, because i will need to pay for accommodations as well. I have to leave from the East Coast (Newark, New York, or Philly) but i can't find any travel sights that allow me to plan a few months ahead. Anyway, i was wondering, has anyone had experience in traveling to Pakistan? What was the best time to go? Are they accepting of foreigners in the Punjabi region? Anything i should keep in mind while traveling? and please, serious answers are greatly appreciated. (more...)

Resolved Question: What is the best city to live in Texas with lots of jobs, construction etc.?
I am originally from Hawaii and married an African American from the East Coast. I enjoy the city but also like to travel a bit to hunt. I prefer a mix of every accommodation of shopping & restaurants as well as lots of out door, naturalistic things to do. I do enjoy the museums, shows, music etc... as well. I am looking for an enriched life. I am currently a Christian. We have taken a big hit with the construction economy here in California. We need to immediately get jobs i.e. concrete finisher and also have the opportunity to continue our education to change careers and get back on our feet financially. We wish to rent and live in a safe area with lots of diversity. NO discrimination. We will be looking to also start a family. Any information or input you can provide is helpful. I don't know why Texas, I guess it's because I grew up on a Ranch when I was a little a girl. Thank you again. (more...)
