Golden Arches East: McDonald's in East Asia, Second Edition
Golden Arches East: McDonald's in East Asia, Second Edition What does it mean that McDonald's has become an integral part of daily life throughout East Asia--so much so, in fact, that many Asians have ceased to consider the American hamburger chain "foreign" at all? The five scholars who contribute essays to Golden Arches East have taken a novel approach to cultural anthropology. Call it hamburger historiography, perhaps, but their analysis of McDonald's ascendancy in the East has much to say about both the corporation itself and the changing values of Asian societies. Despite widespread criticism of McDonald's as a symbol of global homogeneity and environmental degradation, not all of these changes have been negative. In Hong Kong and China, for instance, McDonald's has actually contributed to improving standards of bathroom cleanliness and table manners, according to the authors. And the transformation has cut both ways; McDonalds itself has been forced to adapt to local culture and tastes. In studying how McDonald's has been assimilated into Asian societies, Watson et al. provide a fascinating portrait of cultural accommodation, compromise, and change.

Open Question: Vietnamese and Laos women are body hairless?
I'm caucasian part south east asian, most caucasian already find I do not have much body hair, I don't have to shave my legs as well as the hair on my arms are very unnoticeable but I sure I got the hair and many south east asian women do have hair but not much as caucasian women, but I notice that the asian women from Vietnam and Lao seem to be most group that lack of body hair. one time I went to my mother country in south east asia, I met the maid of my grandpa, she was older than me. she looked at my arms and said. "you have got pretty arms because you have a blonde body hair and it looks pretty but I have no hair." so I look to her arms and surprised that she has no any hair on her arms, including her upper arms. -one time I met the vietnamese waitress in the restaurant. this girl also has no any hair on her arms and legs ( almost hairless) she also has got very smoothed skin ( pale yellowish like the color of sculpture) another time I went to the salon, I met the Lao woman. this girl also hairless. I'm thai part swedish. (more...)

Open Question: Am i doing my this right?
Im supposed to round.... The marching band at Durango High School has 120 members. Of these, 18% are 9th grade students. Estimate the number of 9th graders in the marching band. so i rounded it to 20% over 100% and got 1/5. So that would be 20 people... is that right?? In one east-coast side, 35% of the restaurants in the city are on the bay. The city has 180 restaurants. Estimate the number of restaurants on the bay. I rounded it to 30% over on bay to x over 180 total restaurants. and got 1/60. So if i set the proportion up right... then is 60 restaurants correct?? (more...)

Open Question: Farnsworth House in Gettysburg? Ghost Picture?
We spent a week in PA this spring, and took a tour of the Farnsworth House in Gettysburg. I've never really been one to believe in ghosts, but I can't help but be so intrigued by what happened while we were there. I went on the tour with my Dad and younger brother, so it was pretty interesting. The first hour was fine for me but I was obviously very uneasy about the whole thing despite loving ghost stories etc, and I felt prickly all over while in the attic. After the attic part was over and I was a little bit settled down we headed down to the basement, the guide started telling his stories etc, and told how if you hear talking its just the restaurant upstairs (its a bed and breakfast/tavern also). Suddenly out of no where I heard laughing and I looked around to figure out where it was coming from, it sounded like directly behind me but there was nothing there but a wall, and I finally realized that my Dad and brother were staring at the same spot. I asked them if they heard that and they said yes, and we were all confused because it definitely didn't come from upstairs as it wasn't muffled and it was directly behind us. I tried to explain to them how it sounded, like it was almost in another dimension or something, and they agreed. It creeped me out a little bit so I started fidgeting but eventually that part of the tour was over and I headed up front to take a picture of the elaborate set up (1800's seance type display) with my digital camera. I took the picture and my camera shut off, despite the batteries being full. I was confused and was fooling with the camera trying to get it to work but I was holding up everyone behind me so I walked out of the basement with a dead camera and I turned it back on after I was out and it was perfectly fine, but when it turned back on, it had a strange picture on it. It really was interesting because it was completely pitch black down in the basement except for some candles, and I didn't use a flash because I wanted the natural candle light. I was shuddered by the picture when I realized that it just didn't make sense, and I looked to see the battery was still completely full. After the tour was over I showed the guide and he told me it was definitely a picture of a ghost, but I still am undecided on whether or not they actually exist. While on the tour of East Cemetary Hill I got great pictures of alot of orbs, even a red one. So it was pretty cool all in all, but what do you think of this picture? http://xs135.xs.to/xs135/09021/vacation_196452.jpg Sorry if that's a little lengthy but thanks for the interest! (more...)

Voting Question: Relationship Advice. What should I do?
I have been talking to this guy for about 5-6 months now and we definitely have a lot in common and enjoy talking to each other. Problem is, he's in the Military and is on the west coast while I am nearly 3,000 miles away on the east coast. We talk every night for about 2 hours and we never seem to get tired of each other. He is home right now for a few weeks and has taken me out to movies and really nice restaurants for dinner and has taken me to meet his parents. When we're out in public, we definitely act like we're a couple (holding hands, kissing in front of people, etc) but I guess it's just the fact that he is so far away that makes a relationship not very possible at the time. All I know is I care about him and like him very very much and if he were willing to be in a relationship, I would be willing to be in one too and try to make things work out together. I know he likes me and he knows I really like him too. Does absence and time really make a heart grow fonder? Is just staying really good friends until he gets out of the military and then maybe trying to start a relationship a good idea? What should I do? Thanks so much for the advice! (more...)

Resolved Question: PUERTO RICAN TAKE OUT FOOD DALLAS, TEXAS?
Hi! My fiance is Puerto Rican. He has lived in Dallas for 2 years and misses home cooked Puerto Rican food. Thankfully, he was a cook for 10+ years, raised in Aguada, PR. So he's able to cook it himself. But sometimes we would like to hop in the car and go some place. And surely there are other locals that would love to do the same. Therefore, we've decided to try our hand at a "cuchifrito"!! If you're from the East Coast and/or if you're PR you know what I'm talking about. It's their "soul food". Any feedback on this idea would be greatly appreciated. Especially if you're in the restaurant business. Thanks! (more...)

Voting Question: How could I politely correct someone of assuming I am of a different race?
I live in the north east of the US, people always assume (before asking me) what race I am, and they always seem to think I am hispanic. I am 75% American Indian/25% European. They will walk up and just speak spanish to me (which I don't speak at all), Or last weekend, my husband (he is African American) and I were at a restaurant with our 1 year old daughter, and a waiter came up to us (he wasn't serving us.) and asked how we were doing and such, then he brought up how his grandson was mixed with African American & Hispanic and went on talking about that. And I never said anything about our daughter's multi-cultural background. It is getting annoying that people don't seem to have the respect to ask what my heritage is. Should I even go out of my way to correct them politely? Or just ignore it? (more...)

Resolved Question: Best places to live in Minneapolis/St. Paul?
So currently I live on the east side of Milwaukee, which is called the fashionable/trendy east side. It's also not too overly expensive, I mean average one bedroom is 600 a month and has plenty of shops, coffee, restaurants, and great bars around my place and on the east side in general. It's also known that its a younger part of the town as there are 2 universities in the general area. Looking to see what would be very similar in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area that's not TOO expensive. Now granted it doesn't have to be near universities but the rest would be nice. Thanks so much for taking a look! It also wouldn't hurt if it was near water too. :-) (more...)
