Club Paradise
Club Paradise Robin Williams went through a period in the mid '80s when he looked like he'd turned into the next Richard Pryor: yet another brilliant standup comic neutered by the script mills of the Hollywood studios. Indeed, Williams seems almost like a spectator in this film, reacting to a supporting cast extremely deep in talent doing what they can with the mediocre script by Brian Doyle-Murray and director Harold Ramis. Williams plays a heroic Chicago fireman, who is injured and retires after saving several lives in a fire. He takes his insurance settlement and buys a resort on a poor Caribbean island (the film was shot in Jamaica). He spends the rest of the time playing straight man to a gaggle of guests that includes such SCTV alumni as Rick Moranis, Andrea Gross, Eugene Levy, and Robin Duke, as well as Jimmy Cliff and Peter O'Toole. Occasionally rising to the level of mild amusement, Club Paradise is, disappointingly, little more than a series of hit-and-miss sketches strung together by the feeblest of plots. --Marshall Fine

Financial Shock: A 360º Look at the Subprime Mortgage Implosion, and How to Avoid the Next Financial Crisis
Financial Shock: A 360º Look at the Subprime Mortgage Implosion, and How to Avoid the Next Financial Crisis "In Financial Shock, Mr. Zandi provides a concise and lucid account of the economic, political and regulatory forces behind this binge." --The Wall Street Journal "Aggressive builders, greedy lenders, optimistic home buyers: Zandi succinctly dissects the mortgage mess from start to (one hopes) finish." --U.S. News and World Report "If you wonder how it could be possible for a subprime mortgage loan to bring the global financial system and the U.S. economy to its knees, you should read this book. No one is better qualified to provide this insight and advice than Mark Zandi." -- Larry Kudlow, Host, CNBC's Kudlow & Company "Every once in a while a book comes along that's so important, it commands recognition. This is one of them. Zandi provides a rilliant blow-by-blow account of how greed, stupidity, and recklessness brought the first major economic crises of the 21st entury and the most serious since the Great Depression." --Bernard Baumohl,Managing Director, The Economic Outlook Group and best-selling author, The Secrets of Economic Indicators "Throughout the financial crisis Mark Zandi has played two important roles. He has insightfully analyzed its causes and thoughtfully recommended steps to alleviate it. This book continues those tasks and adds a third--providing a comprehensive and comprehensible explanation of the issues that is accessible to the general public and extremely useful to those who specialize in the area." --Barney Frank, Chairman, House Financial Services Committee The subprime crisis created a gigantic financial catastrophe. What happened? How did it happen? How can we prevent similar crises from happening again? Mark Zandi answers all these critical questions--systematically, carefully, and in plain English. Zandi begins with a fast-paced overview and then illuminates the deepest causes, from the psychology of homeownership to Alan Greenspan's missteps. You'll see the home "flippers" at work and the real estate agents who cheered them on. You'll learn how Internet technology and access to global capital transformed the mortgage industry, helping irresponsible lenders drive out good ones.Zandi demystifies the complex financial engineering that enabled lenders to hide deepening risks, shows how global investors eagerly bought in, and explains how flummoxed regulators failed to prevent disaster, despite crucial warning signs. Most important, Zandi offers indispensable advice for investors who must recognize emerging bubbles, policymakers who must improve oversight, and citizens who must survive whatever comes next. *Liar's loans, flippers, predatory lenders, delusional homebuilders How the housing market came unhinged, and the whirlwind came together*Alan Greenspan's trillion-dollar bet Betting on the boom, ignoring the bubble*The subprime market goes global Worldwide investors get a piece of the action--and reap the results*Wall Street's alchemists: conjuring up Frankenstein New financial instruments and their hidden contents*Back to the future: risk management for the 21st century Respecting the "animal spirits" that drive even the most sophisticated markets

Make Millions with Foreclosures and Short Sales - Secrets on How to Profit from the Real Estate SubPrime Crisis (Make Millions with Foreclosures and Short Sales)
Make Millions with Foreclosures and Short Sales - Secrets on How to Profit from the Real Estate SubPrime Crisis (Make Millions with Foreclosures and Short Sales) THE BEST-KEPT SECRET IN THE FORECLOSURE INDUSTRY IS NOW AVAILABLE IN THIS BOOK! This book is a step-by-step manual that teaches you how to profit from this current downturn in the real estate market. You begin by learning how to build a solid business model by putting together the right team. You will learn how to locate, negotiate with the owners and the banks and profit before these properties ever reach public auctions. Savvy real estate experts believe that the majority of the best deals are obtained at the preforeclosure stage. The key point that differentiates this book from other foreclosure investment guides is a strong focus on how to perform profitable short sales. A Short Sale is a sale of a property in which the proceeds fall short of what the owner still owes on the mortgage. Many financial institutions will agree to accept the proceeds of a short sale in order to avoid a costly and complicated foreclosure, and the owner is able to pay off the loan for less than what he owes.

Open Question: Is not the definition of "terrorism" actually a definition of government?
According to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, the definition of terrorism is " the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion." Dictionary.com's definition of terrorism is "the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes." This is in effect the definition of what a government is (specifically, government, as it exists in the real world, not in the utopian fantasies of the well-intentioned advocates of government). Governments routinely use violence and threats to intimidate and coerce. For a prime example, look at the foreign policy of the United States. Under George W. Bush, the United States government did not even bother to use the threat of violence to coerce other governments to act in the manner it desired. However, Barack Obama is going to "change" this as he promises to "talk to" (ie. threaten with violence unless they do what he wants) other governments that are designated as "enemies" of the United States government. Another example of government action in effect fitting the definition of terrorism is taxation. In all "countries" (ie. turf claimed by criminal gangs of the governmental variety), the government demands that its "citizens" (ie. victims, slaves, or serfs) pay "taxes" (ie. a portion of their income) to the government or face violent retaliation (generally, the penalty for not paying taxes is "confiscation" of your property, being tossed in a cage, or both; in extreme cases, a person who refuses to pay taxes may be killed by agents of the government). It can hardly be argued that "taxation" is anything but an act of terrorism. Another example of terrorism by government is its threatening campaigns against peaceful people who act in a manner which is deemed to be "immoral," usually by the standards of the religion that is currently being used to justify the government's existence. The government, in effect, threatens to use violence against anybody who decides to smoke the wrong vegetable, pay their sexual partners in money (instead of other forms of compensation), say the wrong word on certain TV or radio stations, start a radio or TV station without government permission, for owning a weapon for self-defense and a whole host of other imaginary victimless "crimes" invented by politicians. The government engages in terrorism against these people who have never harmed anybody, but merely choose to act in a manner that is unconventional and/or unpopular. In effect, the definition of "terrorism" is the definition of government. The reason why governments must wage a "War on Terrorism" is fairly simple of course. Governments are organizations which claim a monopoly on the Terrorism industry and since it is impossible to create a monopoly without the use of violence to suppress competition. The reason why governments create justifications for their existence after the fact (by hiring intelligent people who either lack moral values or are themselves deluded by the justifications offered previously) is because they need to create a false sense of legitimacy for their massive criminal operation in order to convince their victims that the operation is legitimate. For the same reasons, governments operate schools for the purpose of indoctrinating the young (the "Western" governments even admitted that the "Communist" governments operated their schools for such purposes), but also teach them useful (and non-threatening) skills in order to make them more productive "workers" when they reach the artificial government-ordained age-number that supposedly confers adulthood. Can anybody who considers government to be a legitimate institution refute my arguments (and no, logical fallacies do not count as refutations) against their beloved institution of government? How exactly is government not "terrorism" by definition? (more...)

Resolved Question: Rare Numbers with Interesting Properties?
You have to find a number say abc Where a^2 x b^2 x c^2 - 1 = abc. Example: The number 143 so 1^2 * 4^2 * 3^2 - 1 = (1 x 16 x 9) - 1 = 143, It can be any number of digits, so it could work for a number ab, abcd, abcde, abc...........................z. What are other a number that fits this? I had found three such numbers 143 , 323, 11663 On analysis of above numbers I found something very interesting. Just Imagine, these numbers are product of two PRIMES 143 = 11 * 13 323 = 17 * 19 11663 = 107 * 109 Since (abc.......z)^2 - 1 =abc........z (abc.......z - 1) (abc.......z + 1) = abc........z So we know that such numbers will be product of two integer with difference of 2. But I do not know why those two numbers are PRIME. Can you find next number of this sequence? Or Give useful insight on this? Note: Original question was asked by Josh S where SMCI, Duke & miryana gave very useful contribution. (Yahoo is not allowing me to post link to the original question) @ Miryana: Thanks for pointing out that last digit must end with 3 or 9, when I saw you original reply I knew that something is wrong & you will correct it :) Anyways I do not have much time left as its already midnight, see you all tomorrow. @Torquest: Thanks for your effort. Can you please share your logic? (seems faster than mine, as it took me 1 hour to test till 10^8).May be I can check it little further as I have Core2Duo 64bit processor with 8GB RAM. @Miryana: Moreover if you notice such number is always in form of (2^m * 3^n) - 1. Any idea why this happens? @torquest: Okay, I was speaking in terms of x where you are referring to x^2-1, so that way I have also checked 10^16. (10^8)^2. Anyways I really wonder whether there are any such number besides those 3, I am thinking of submitting this sequence to OEIS with "hard" tag so that one who has interest & resource can try it :) @Torquest: Just ignore my last comment, now I understood what you were referring to, Anyways I did it for 10^18 using your algorithm (earlier I feared about 5 being any of the digit so I had used little complicated one which took hell lot of time). I have submitted this sequence in OEIS, let's see what happens. It is weekend so I have time for working on this. Wow!!! Our sequence got listed on OEIS. Resolved Question: I thought these banks that got the bailout money are suppose to help the public?
5 years ago we bought our town home for 185k. before we bought our home I was 30 days late once on my car loan, for that i got thrown in a ARM sub prime loan. well 6 months ago it adjusted to 9.99% with a 550 payment hike. in the mix of this my wife lost here job. I called up my bank to get it refinanced. They said credit is fine and ordered a appraisal, they found the property was valued at 155k, we owe 162k, then they told me i would have to come up with 27k at closing and the new loan would be 139k with a 5.50% apr. Naturally i don't have 27k laying around. Then he said there is nothing they can do, I asked him about the government money. They told me its not for homeowners its for lending business money. I just would like some advice on this, going broke with this payment. I posted this last week and found some very rude answers to this matter such as you made your bed now lay in it. Please don't waste your time with commits like this, we both work hard, always lived within our means. Again i am not looking at getting smeared by blaming the lenders. IF these damn banks punished me for being late once on my car payment i would not be in this situation. Its like a big game. I know folks who delibertly skip out of there obligations in the past where viewed as the same credit worthyness. (more...)

Resolved Question: MALAY SPEAKERS PLEASE HELP TRANSLATE?
PLEASE TRANSLATE THIS ENGLISH INTO MALAY PLEASE? THANKS!!!! The national flower of Malaysia is the hibiscus, or bunga raya. The flower is found in abundance throughout the country, and for this very reason, was chosen to be the national flower (in 1960) by Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman. There are many varieties of the hibiscus, but the five-petaled Hibiscus rosa sinensis was chosen above the others, as the most symbolically relevant. The five petals of the bunga raya symbolise the Rukunegara (the Five Principles of Nationhood), while the colour red represents courage. It is believed that the flower first arrived in Malaysia via trade from its original home in the Far East sometime before the 12th century. The national flower, bunga raya, is known for its medicinal properties. The roots of the plant are used as a cure for fever and other ailments, while the juice obtained from the leaves and roots is said to be effective in relieving skin eruptions and glandular troubles. Also, the petals were commonly used as cosmetics to darken and highlight women's eyebrows. (more...)

Resolved Question: Do we know anything about the relation of prime factorizations of n and n+1?
...except for that there are no primes in common? As in n = 99: 99 = 3*3*11 100 = 2*2*5*5 Can we tell anything about the factorization of 100 if we have factored 99, except for that there will be no 3's and no 11's? The property mentioned above sounds very puzzling for me (despite the proof is trivial)... When we know what primes won't be included (will have the power of zero), how could it be that we would know nothing about all other primes? Icarus Rising: I don't mind when the discussion goes a little off-topic, it's all very interesting :-) I did the same around the time I was beginning with Y!A. Just FYI, I have a counterexample for the refined version of your claim too. 2*3*5*7*11*13 + 1 = 59*509. I'm sorry, your source must have been wrong. (more...)

Resolved Question: ARE YOU GOING TO DENY the AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL REPORT?
Israel and the Occupied Palestinian TerritoriesSTATE OF ISRAEL Head of StateShimon Peres (replaced Moshe Katzav in June) Head of governmentEhud Olmert Death penaltyabolitionist for ordinary crimes Population7 million (Israel); 3.9 million (OPT) Life expectancy80.3 years (Israel); 72.9 years (OPT) Under-5 mortality (m/f)6/5 per 1,000 (Israel); 23/18 per 1,000 (OPT) Adult literacy97.1 per cent (Israel); 92.4 per cent (OPT) The human rights situation in the Israeli Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT) remained dire. Israeli forces killed more than 370 Palestinians, destroyed more than 100 Palestinian homes and imposed ever more stringent restrictions on the movement of Palestinians. In June, the Israeli government imposed an unprecedented blockade on the Gaza Strip, virtually imprisoning its entire 1.5 million population, subjecting them to collective punishment and causing the gravest humanitarian crisis to date. Some 40 Palestinians died after being refused passage out of Gaza for urgent medical treatment not available in local hospitals. Most Gazans were left dependent on international aid for survival but UN aid agencies complained that the Israeli blockade made it difficult for them to provide the much needed assistance. In the West Bank, the Israeli authorities continued to expand illegal settlements and build a 700-km fence/wall in violation of international law. Impunity remained the norm for Israeli soldiers and Israeli settlers who committed serious abuses against Palestinians, including unlawful killings, physical assaults and attacks on property. Thousands of Palestinians were arrested, most of whom were released without charge. Those charged with security-related offences often received unfair trials before military courts. Some 9,000 Palestinian adults and children remained in Israeli jails, some of whom had been held without charge or trial for years. Attacks by Palestinian armed groups killed 13 Israelis (see Palestinian Authority entry). Background In January, President Moshe Katzav took leave of absence after the Attorney General announced he would be charged with rape. The President resigned in June after striking a plea bargain in which he admitted responsibility for lesser offences, including sexual harassment, indecent assault and harassment of a witness, in exchange for agreement that the rape charges would be dropped and he would be spared prison. One of the plaintiffs petitioned the Supreme Court to set aside the plea bargain, and women?s rights organizations called for Moshe Katzav to face trial. The case remained pending. In June, Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres was elected President. The Israeli government resumed talks with the Palestinian Authority (PA) and in November the two sides participated in an international meeting in Annapolis, sponsored by the US government, about resuming peace negotiations. However, no concrete measures were announced at the meeting. Prior Israeli undertakings to ease movement restrictions on Palestinians and to remove some Israeli settlement ?outposts? had not materialized by the end of the year. In December, the Israeli authorities announced further expansion of Israeli settlements in the OPT, in violation of international law. Killings of Palestinians Frequent air strikes and other attacks by Israeli forces killed more than 370 Palestinians, including some 50 children, and injured thousands more. The Israeli authorities maintained their strikes were in response to ?Qassam? rocket and mortar attacks by Gaza-based Palestinian armed groups against nearby southern Israeli towns and villages and against Israeli army positions along the perimeter of the Gaza Strip. More than half of the Palestinians killed by Israeli forces were armed militants who were participating in armed confrontations or attacks, or who were extrajudicially executed in air strikes. The rest were unarmed civilians not involved in the hostilities. Some 50 children were among those killed. Five children were killed by Israeli missiles in two separate incidents in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza, in August. Mahmoud, Sara and Yahia Abu Ghazal, aged eight, nine and 11, were killed on 29 August while grazing their sheep, and Fadi Mansour al-Kafarna and ?Abd al-Qader ?Ashour, aged 11 and 13, were killed and a third child was injured on 21 August while playing in a field. Zaher al-Majdalawi and Ahmad Abu Zubaidah, aged 13 and 14, were killed on 1 June as they were flying kites on the beach in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza. Killings of Israelis Seven Israeli civilians and six soldiers were killed by Palestinian armed groups, the lowest annual fatality figure since the outbreak of the intifada in 2000. Shirel Friedman and Oshri Oz were killed in Sderot by ?Qassam? rocket attacks on 21 and 27 May. Justice system Detentions Thousands of Palestinians, including scores of children, were detained by Israeli forces in the OPT. The majority of those arres (more...)

Voting Question: Who is financing and designing all the futuristic places in Dubai?
http://stylecrave.com/2008-12-16/the-top-10-architectural-wonders-of-dubai/ Look at the "large archipelago of a scaled map of Earth", the Midgar (Final Fantasy 7) vision of "Business Bay", the insane uber-Disney World "Dubailand", and "The Palm Islands"??? Who is planning and building all of these insanely extravagant resorts, that are all obviously boasting the kind of National affluence Rome once exhibited, and US in it's economic prime? I am hoping for some more specific, analytical answer than "the sheiks"... I mean, how much is the actual Gov't behind these plans? Are there any huge multinational or regional corporations behind this? Are there any connections to any "American" corporations mixed in to finances of these future structures? Dick Cheney bought a property on "The Palm Islands" there for retirement, and many many upper class Americans are following suit... So I'm curious of which multinational corporations are behind it... or is it a totally Gov't based thing, funded from oil profits? (more...)
