Open Question: I'm looking to switch our mortgage from Repayment to Interest Only ?
I have split up with my partner and we would like to rent our flat out until the property market recovers. We are with Nationwide and it seems we can switch to Interest Only but as part of the condition of this we must have an ISA/endowment policy in place alongside this. We are really doing this to reduce the cost so does anyone know how much banks would insist on us paying into an ISA? The current repayment monthly amount is £1407 and taking it to Interest only brings it to £930 Thanks (more...)

Open Question: Should I move or stay where I am? Please advise me.?
I live in an expensive city and am a sole parent studying. I am constantly struggling and lately feel really down. All I can afford to live in is a tiny granny flat/bedsitter and I hate it. Im thinking of moving up the coast, only about an hour away by train where it is significantly cheaper (I could rent a 2 bedroom, fairly nice place for the same price as I pay now) Im just scared about actually moving, changing my daughters daycare, making friends etc etc. I am close to my family who are here. I mean logically it isnt that far away but I still am unsure what to do. If you were in my situation would you move? lol no im in Sydney not Brisbane. Open Question: Can you force a spouse to help pay the bills?
My S-I-L is having some major issues with her husband. He didn't have a job for 8 months in 2008. He just started working a few weeks ago. While he was at home all he did was sit on his butt and play games on the internet. . . he refused to help clean, take care of the children (one his, one hers), cook . . . anything because it's "the woman's job". She is working at a fast food restaurant, maybe 15 hours/week. Over the months that he wasn't working they slowly fell behind on bills--> electric gets paid only when they get a shut off notice, their phone got shut off, they are 6 months behind on rent--to the point where the only thing her paycheck did was bring the checking account positive just to return to the red a few days later. Now that he's working, he is refusing to deposit his paycheck into the account because of her lack of financial responsibility and her "not" paying the bills. Altogether he has around $600 in paychecks that he is stashing, according to her, and he won't even put gas in their vehicle. In fact, instead of cashing a check, he borrowed money from his 11 year old daughter to buy cigarettes. She was told that he HAS to help pay the bills but I'm not sure if that is true?? I don't know all the details, like if his name is on the bills (I would assume). We live in MO. *She has talked about leaving him several times the past few weeks but seems to lack the conviction to follow thru. He is emotionally and verbally abusive to both her and her son (I've witnessed it), she wanted to start taking classes to further her education to be able to get a better job, and he flat out said that if she did, he would divorce her b/c then she wouldn't be able to work (heaven forbid he would have to pull his own weight). That was said barely a year after he finished his college education during which time (2 years) he flat out refused to work because he was taking classes. The said part is that he hasn't even done anything with the education he received. Anyway, she is wondering if there is any way that she can make him help pay the bills. Any help here is greatly appreciated. **She has asked me to go to the public legal aid office with her on Friday to talk to them because she won't understand the legalities, which I know nada about. It didn't make sense to me that you could force a spouse to pay the bills, but she said that she was told by several people. Her son isn't his and they never got a chance to finalize an adoption-->for lack of money, so she won't be able to get any support out of him. This is his third marriage and apparently his firt two were exactly the same i.e. he sat on his butt while the woman did all the work for him. *Which would have been a red light for anyone* She has pretty much said the only reason she is still with him is because she promised his daughter that she would stick it thru with her dad - I guess she left him once before a few years back.... I really try not to get involved in any of my in-laws lives (they are so complicated!) but I'm being dragged into this by my F-I-L because I have the sense to leave a spouse if I was treated like that. I want to save some more money in my apartment rent but I dont know many people where I live. Should I get a roommate I dont know and keep the apartment or should I move into a room or a phone booth kind of flat and lose space? Note that my current apartment is decent and has been renewed but it's still old nonetheless and the city where I live most apartments are like that; also moving into a smaller apartment would only save me about 20%, 30% max - the roommate or just a room goes to half of course. Open Question: what if i move out before tenancy end?
here it is: I'm living in a flat . I signed tenancy agreement for 1year and paid deposit and first season rent. but I need to move out soon. What will happen if I move out when my first rent ends? There's no clause says detail exactly about breach of duty, a manager only told me I only could leave with paying annual amount of rent... Could i just move out? thanks Sal I already contacted the flat manager several times. they said i have to: either sublet my room to aother one or pay one year rent.... which both hard for me it's ok for me to lose the deposit as penalty. but i'm afraid of court order or something like legal trouble (more...)

Open Question: How low in price can you go on a house offer?
I'm looking for flats to buy in London and some people have told me that I can go quite low on my offer as I don't depend on any mortgages, and I also have everything in cash in a bank account abroad (in Euros to be precise). So, for example, I'm looking at freehold flats of around 139,000 pounds, and I've been told that in the current climate I can make an offer in the region of i.e. 110,000 pounds, which would be very good for me. Do people usually accept such offers? I was also wondering if freehold flats need to pay any maintenance charges or ground rent just like leasehold ones? This would make it essential for me to go very low. (more...)

Open Question: Housing Benefit/Local Housing allowance?
I know i'm entitled to it up until June when i finish my course at college. I've been having trouble find somewhere because since i'm under 25 I only recieved a shared housing rate. Does this mean I can only stay in shared accomodation or can i find somewhere on my own and pay more, or in turn will working more affect my housing benefit? Also, if i find a shared flat do they have to accept that i'm paying part of the rent through benefits or can they refuse me?
