The Christian Tradition: A History of the Development of Doctrine, Vol. 2: The Spirit of Eastern Christendom (600-1700)
The Christian Tradition: A History of the Development of Doctrine, Vol. 2: The Spirit of Eastern Christendom (600-1700)
The line that separated Eastern Christendom from Western on the medieval map is similar to the "iron curtain" of recent times. Linguistic barriers, political divisions, and liturgical differences combined to isolate the two cultures from each other. Except for such episodes as the schism between East and West or the Crusades, the development of non-Western Christendom has been largely ignored by church historians. In The Spirit of Eastern Christendom, Jaroslav Pelikan explains the divisions between Eastern and Western Christendom, and identifies and describes the development of the distinctive forms taken by Christian doctrine in its Greek, Syriac, and early Slavic expression.

"It is a pleasure to salute this masterpiece of exposition. . . . The book flows like a great river, slipping easily past landscapes of the utmost diversity—the great Christological controversies of the seventh century, the debate on icons in the eighth and ninth, attitudes to Jews, to Muslims, to the dualistic heresies of the high Middle Ages, to the post-Reformation churches of Western Europe. . . . His book succeeds in being a study of the Eastern Christian religion as a whole."—Peter Brown and Sabine MacCormack, New York Review of Books

"The second volume of Professor Pelikan's monumental work on The Christian Tradition is the most comprehensive historical treatment of Eastern Christian thought from 600 to 1700, written in recent years. . . . Pelikan's reinterpretation is a major scholarly and ecumenical event."—John Meyendorff

"Displays the same mastery of ancient and modern theological literature, the same penetrating analytical clarity and balanced presentation of conflicting contentions, that made its predecessor such an intellectual treat."—Virgina Quarterly Review

Developments in Central and East European Politics
Developments in Central and East European Politics The face of Central and Eastern Europe has been dramatically transformed since the collapse of communism. The region faces new challenges, including the needs to find a balance between effective leadership and accountability and to reverse the economic decline of the late communist years. Addressing these concerns and others, Developments in Central and East European Politics 4 brings together specially commissioned chapters by leading scholars from both sides of the Atlantic.

The chapters, all of which are new to this edition, focus on key features of the political systems that have emerged following the transition to postcommunist rule and the enlargement of the European Union through 2006. Full attention is given to the pattern of events in individual nations, but the main emphasis is on the framework of politics across the region—constitutions, leadership, parliaments, parties, and electoral systems—and the process of politics, as it is revealed in political participation, civil society, economic change, and the quality of democratic government within and beyond the region.

Clearly written and well supported with references and suggestions for further reading, Developments in Central and East European Politics 4 is the ideal guide to the process of change in a group of states that were formerly modeled on the Soviet Union but are now a distinctive and varied presence within a continent that has been redefining its boundaries, its values, its economic systems, and its international allegiances.

A Political Economy of the Middle East: Third Edition
A Political Economy of the Middle East: Third Edition
This integrated, analytic text presents a comprehensive analysis of the transformation of the political economy of development in the contemporary Middle East over the past several decades. Extensively rewritten and revised, the third edition of A Political Economy of the Middle East retains a focus on the interaction of economic development processes, state systems, and social actors even as it also: Documents the many changes in demography, education, labor markets, urbanization, water and agriculture, and international labor migration in the Middle East in recent years; Considers the effect of rising oil prices on reinforcement of authoritarian governance in the region; Refines its assessment of “the Washington Consensus” to provide a more nuanced approach to the issue of the shifting balance of state and market in economic growth and reform (in an entirely rewritten Chapter 9); Presents Islamism as a vital force in the region that is nonetheless a vast, diverse social movement with many conflicting participants (in a wholly revised Chapter 14).

Open Question: Greatest Resources of Portugal's economy? (read if you know a lot about Portugal's economy)?
My teacher assigned us countries that we have to do research on. I'm not looking for answers for the following questions, just help for where I could find the answer. But if you want to tell me the answer, be my guest, I'm still going to research it myself anyway. The question is: "What are the two greatest resources that Portugal has used to develop its economy? If it is still a potential area of growth, explain what it is, and how it should be used." The example he gave was that for some countries in the middle east, oil would be an example of a resource that has helped the country develop, I guess because it has brought in the most income. The second question is the opposite, asking what the "two weakest resources" are that have slowed, damaged, or inhibited your nations economic success and/or development? I'm guessing an example of that would be lack of technology in some African countries. How & where would i search for answers to these questions? thank you. (more...)

Open Question: UK anti-semitism increase since Gaza attack ?
We read with concern that attacks on Jews in the UK has increased since the Israeli genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. Its a great shame that a minority of people cannot separate the actions of the Israeli state (which is made up of Jews, Christians, Muslims and Druze) from innocent people in the UK who just happen to be Jewish. It is unfortunate that there are elements in the UK who would use this situation in the middle East to forward their own political agenda's. Yes people in the UK should point out, and object to the Israeli governments genocide of the Palestinians, but that is very different from attacking someone for their religion in the UK who has played no part in Israeli's barberous actions. How do you feel about this seriously wrong development ? Source: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/uk-antisemitism-surge-since-gaza-attack-1229111.html (more...)

Open Question: Is it time for the Prime Minister to recuse certain appointments due to conflict of interest ?
and review the efficacy that existing and potential placements have on diplomatic policy and process. Rohitha has stated in the press that certain posts have been filled with "caretaker" diplomats until new corps can be trained but I wonder why there are newly created appointments at new venues staffed with persons without any diplomatic expertise and truly nepotistic connections? I would remind that for every overstep of power there is a remedy. When common sense is not a sensibility, a full accounting of diplomatic resources is neccesitated. This includes a full review of qualifications of the present and past diplomatic porfolio. I wither the thought of how some people achieved their thoughts on democratic diplomacy. Selective recollection of conversation is no excuse for prohibition of established procedures of good governance. http://www.lakbimanews.lk/news/laknew4.htm Just because we have had a protracted war on terrorism it does not mean that a fisticuff between and within the three branches is acceptable. I would hasten all those I spoke with to recall that the primary policy of Sri Lanka that was discussed was equal opportunity for growth, equal representation under the law, equal distribution of services, equal justice. I am sure that if a certain 24 year old son-in-law-to-be found himself party to an executable offense in the Middle East that the Foreign Ministry would be in an uproar, but I have to hear a query about 2 nationals that were executed yesterday. I am not commenting on Saudi legistlature, or the justice or injustice of such. My inquiry is rooted in the fact that the Ministry that oversees such affairs is apparently more interested in cocktail parties and junkets with golf club managers than it is in its citizens. The stability, policy and efficacy of a government cannot be based on whether the Chief Executive is in town. It cannot be based on created false tests to verify standards. It cannot be bantered or bartered about. I see much commendable development in Sri Lanka but future development will not be based on political posturing/jockeying it will be based on the fullfilment of the equitable goals to bring energy, quality education, due process, security and better quality of life to the many. It will not happen overnight and it cannot be fabricated, it must be grown-thus prefabrication is out of the question. There is no such thing as democracy-in-a-box, but the unruly behaviour that has spread throughout the world will be put in check, everywhere including Sri Lanka. What I am seeing in this article is the propogation of engineered foods, an item that is not a part of our domestic or foreign policy. The Ministries are to forward the National Policy not personal agenda. It is apparent that a National/International Policy Statement needs to be created by the Executive and the Cabinet. Line item #1 is to eliminate terrorism while maintaining sovreignity. Prior to making appointments consider the dis-appointments of misplaced placements. Furthermore, refrain from tete-a-tete's with foreign leaders in hotel rooms when there exists government accomodations for meetings that pertain to governmental affairs. Consider this my request to Nasheed for full divulgence to the Executive. Please pass my congratulations to Linda Spelenwade(sp?) my number is at the LA Consul and with the President's Secretary. This is to be a time of national pride - I ask all our citizens to cloak yourselves in our national identity. Its our flag and our country. (more...)

Voting Question: What do you think about "GAZA" & "ISRAEL" ?
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Israeli tanks and infantry rolled into Gaza after nightfall Saturday, launching a ground offensive in a widening war against Hamas that the Israeli defense minister said "will not be easy and will not be short." The ground operation was preceded by several hours of heavy artillery fire after dark, igniting flames in the night sky. Machine gun fire rattled as bright tracer rounds flashed through the darkness and the crash of hundreds of shells sent up streaks of fire. Artillery fired illuminating rounds, sending streaks of bright light drifting down over Gaza's densely packed neighborhoods. Gunbattles could be heard, as troops crossed the border into Gaza, marching single file. They were backed by helicopter gunships and tanks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Gaza will not be paved with flowers for you, it will be paved with fire and hell," Hamas warned Israeli forces. Spokesman Ismail Radwan said in a televised speech Gaza will "become a graveyard" for Israeli soldiers. "This will not be easy and it will not be short," Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in a televised address shortly after the ground invasion began. "I don't want to disillusion anybody and residents of the south will go through difficult days," he added. "We do not seek war but we will not abandon our citizens to the ongoing Hamas attacks." Israeli officials told NBC News that the goal is to strike at Hamas' foundations and that the operation could take many long days. Israeli security officials said the objective is not to reoccupy Gaza. The depth and intensity of the ground operation will depend on parallel diplomatic efforts, the officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. Eight days of fighting so far have left more than 460 Palestinians dead and four Israelis were killed by rocket fire. Gaza is densely populated, and intense urban warfare in those conditions could exact a much higher civilian toll. The U.N. estimates that at least a quarter of the Palestinians killed so far were civilian. The United Nations Security Council scheduled a special meeting to discuss the latest developments. Heavy artillery fire Before the ground incursion began, heavy Israeli artillery fire hit east of Gaza City in locations were Hamas fighters were deployed. The artillery shells were apparently intended to detonate Hamas explosive devices and mines planted along the border area before troops marched in. A text message sent by Hamas' military wing, Izzedine al-Qassam, said "the Zionists started approaching the trap which our fighters prepared for them." Hamas said it also broadcast a Hebrew message on Israeli military radio frequencies promising to kill and kidnap the Israeli soldiers. "Be prepared for a unique surprise, you will be either killed or kidnapped and will suffer mental illness from the horrors we will show you," the message said. Hamas has also threatened to resume suicide attacks inside Israel. (more...)

Open Question: What do you think of this plan for the Palestinians and Israelis? If not, show the hole in the plan, please? ?
The Jews lived in that area under the kingdom, however, when the kingdom failed they, the Jews, for the most part, moved to Europe and in latter centuries, the Americas. Britain, after WW2 still owned what is now Israel...vague swath of land (but not the West Bank, Golan Heights or Gaza). After the terrible things the Jews were put through during world war two, the English promised the Jews a homeland -- That 'homeland' they promised them was Israel. Then, in 1967, the state of Israel took the West Bank, Golan Heights and Gaza by force from the Arabs. There was a relatively brief war but the Israelis, with Western support (not so much America though, at that time) took these places. So, what's the long term solution? Israel has a right to be, no doubt in my mind and in 2002 the Saudis got agreement from most all Arab Nations that Israel has a right to exist. Still, Israel doesn't own the West Bank or Golan Heights and many consider those occupations. The Golan Heights, for true peace with Syria will have to be returned to them. See, the Golan Heights is very close to the capital of Syria, Damascus. So, tactically, it wouldn't be the best move, but if true peace is to come then it is a must. Syria probably supports Hamas as a proxy against Israel because they, the Syrians want their land back. However, if Israel were to give the Syrians back their land, Syrian support for terrorist groups like Hamas would dry up. See, Syria and Hamas are both Sunni Muslims where Iran and Hezbollah are Shiite Muslims. Think of Them as Catholics and Protestants: The two religious factions don't get a long very well. Despite this, Iran is probably supporting Hamas as well as Hezbollah as the both have the same foe. it is unliky there will be a cessation of monies and arms given to these two, Hamas and Hezbollah, by Iran as they are, basically, state sponsor of terrorism So, Give Syria back it's land. Now, we come to the West Bank...oh dear. So, this land was taken by Israel in '67. When you look at the size of the West Bank it is very, very large part of land and if Israel were to give it back entirely it would reduce the size of their country dramatically. So, at least for now, what Israel needs to do is stop new housing development on the West Bank until they can figure out a way to share the land in some manner. Gaza, actually, hasn't entirely been given back as Israel still controls the air (Hamas has no Air Force, thank goodness), still controls the land port and the sea. The Palestinian people in Gaza are angrey that they have nothing and they turn towards people that will fight for them, sadly, Hamas will literally fight for them. If peace befalls Gaze by an end to this violence, on both sides, there will be foreign investment, I think Hamas would crumble as they have no experties to handle treasure (as in money) and it would be squanders or misused. The people of Gaza would get angry and kick them, Hamas, out. You're going to need both sides make concessions -- Hamas and Hezbollah going need to lay down arms, for good. In the case of Hezbollah assimilate into the National Lebanese Army or disassemble, one of two..Preferably disassemble because there are trust issues. A creation of a Palestinian state is probably needed but that is a massive undertaking and we can't have progress on that front without peace. Good Luck to you in this coming New Year, the people of the Middle East and of the world. Peace. What do you think of this plan for the Palestinians and Israelis? If not, show the hole in the plan, please? ?????????? Brayden, 15 years. bill, you'd be surprised. the west invested in China -- China Kicked the west out and they went back into China...not with tanks, with their wallets. (more...)
