IN THE MIX - Interns & Volunteers: Giving and Getting Back
IN THE MIX - Interns & Volunteers: Giving and Getting Back Length: 30 min. Performance rights included. (Gr. 6-12, College) Hosted by In the Mix interns, this program looks at various ways teens can gain valuable skills and a head start on careers while making a positive difference in the world. We meet teens volunteering at Youthline, a hotline for their peers; teens who started a mentoring program in their neighborhood, and teen environmental activists who cleaned up their beach. We also take an ambulance ride with an amazing group of teens and lifesaving EMTs, and we see how other teens build a house on their spring break. Plus the winner of a scholarship award and a teen intern at Polygram Records who designs album covers share their experiences. They all give their time to help others, but they also get back much more in experience and self-esteem. The sincerity of the volunteers and the interviewers are genuine and appealing. The visuals are hip and quick moving. An excellent choice for all schools, community groups and individual teens who are thinking about doing volunteer work. School Library Journal. Blood, Sweat And Tears: An Oral History of the American Red Cross
Blood, Sweat And Tears: An Oral History of the American Red Cross Journalist and former Red Cross employee Michele Turk tells the story of the modern-day Red Cross through the voices of twenty-nine current and former Red Cross paid and volunteer staff from all parts of the country. Stories range from that of a World War II veteran who credits the Red Cross packages with keeping him alive when he was a POW in Germany to Americans who became heroes simply because they signed up for a Red Cross course and were later able to save a life, to volunteers who spent an intense year in Vietnam cheering up soldiers. We hear from the staffer who pulled people from an automobile before the medics arrive; the mom who saved a neighbor’s child when he was drowning, the nurse who took off from her job to go half-way around the world to distribute food and supplies to the victims of the Asian tsunami in 2004 and the Red Cross worker whose home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Blood, Sweat and Tears features more than 70 photographs and illustrations, including vintage Red Cross posters.

Open Question: What kind of job can I get with a biochemistry/cell biology degree from UCSD?
If I decide not to go to pharmacy or medical school I want to see what options are out there for me. I might also just take a break, and work full time while volunteering @ the hospital and studying for PCAT or MCAT for a year. Please be specific to job title, and expected salary. Thank You. Open Question: Where are some places where I could volunteer?

Open Question: Would being a police officer for a couple years hurt my chances of admission into a law school later on?
Some basic info to consider: - 3.4 Undergraduate GPA from University of California, San Diego - Major: Political Science - Public Law - Minor: Management Science (Business) - Score of 170 on the LSAT - My extracurricular activities include volunteer work for Student Legal Services at UCSD, other community service activities, a legal internship at a criminal defense law firm, employment for the UCSD Police Department, and volunteer work for the San Diego District Attorney's Office. I REALLY want to attend law school at UC Hastings, USF Law, or Loyola-Marymount Law. UC Hastings is my school of preference. I have done plenty of research and determined that law is the career field I want to go into. My goal is to study for a dual JD/MBA degree and go into corporate law. However, one of my lifelong dreams is to become a police officer... I want to spend 1-2 years being a police officer, then pursue a law degree thereafter. I love law enforcement and really want to do it (only if it doesn't hurt my chances at a law school after those 1-2 years). I've gone on ride-alongs and have worked for a police department so I somewhat know what to expect. However, I only want to do this for a couple years. So does it affect my law school admissions (specifically to UC Hastings)? Would it help my application? Any insight is much appreciated! If it will affect my chances for admissions adversely, I wont do it... :( Thank you! (more...)

Open Question: Why are there no volunteer programs to Iran?
Why are there no programs for volunteering abroad in Iran? They have them for so many other countries, and there don't seem to be any Middle East organized trips that go to Iran either. Why is this and how can I travel in Iran if I am a young girl by myself? Thanks. (more...)

Open Question: NCAA Age Regulations?
I am 27 and possibly looking to return to school in a year, to complete my undergraduate studies and was interested in trying out for the basketball team at whatever college/university I attend. If I have not competed in any organized sports am I eligible to play, I'd be 29 by the time basketball season rolled around. Is this up to the NCAA or the individual college/university. I'm not looking at going pro, just looking to play while attending school, though should pro scout come knocking, I'd definitely consider it. Would I be eligible for a scholarship? I know there are exemption rules for the Armed Forces, but What about other government departments or volunteer service programs. I don't if I'd be playing D-1 or not, b/c I don't what school I'd be going to. Any info is helpful. Just curious. thanks. Oh yeah, I know 29 is a bit old to play sports, but I'd be in great physical shape before basketball time. thanks. (more...)

Open Question: I am a qualified TESOL teacher. I would like to volunteer some in Sydney. Anyone know how I can do this?
I would like to volunteer some of my time (perhaps 2-3 hours p/w) to help non-native speaking immigrants to Sydney learn English. I am looking to see if there is any group that might need a qualified TESOL teacher to help. It would have to be one night a week as I work during the days. It would also have to be close to the City, as I live in the Inner West and don't have a car. (more...)
