Spring in Action
Spring in Action Spring in Action 2E is an expanded, completely updated second edition of the best selling Spring in Action. Written by Craig Walls, one of Manning's best writers, this book covers the exciting new features of Spring 2.0, which was released in October 2006.

Spring is a lightweight container framework that represents an exciting way to build enterprise components with simple Java objects. By employing dependency injection and AOP, Spring encourages loosely coupled code and enables plain-old Java objects with capabilities that were previously reserved for EJBs. This book is a hands-on, example-driven exploration of the Spring Framework. Combining short code snippets and an ongoing example developed throughout the book, it shows readers how to build simple and efficient J2EE applications, how to solve persistence problems, handle asynchronous messaging, create and consume remote services, build web applications, and integrate with most popular web frameworks. Readers will learn how to use Spring to write simpler, easier to maintain code so they can focus on what really matters-- critical business needs.

Spring in Action, 2E is for Java developers who are looking for ways to build enterprise-grade applications based on simple Java objects, without resorting to more complex and invasive EJBs. Even hard-core EJB users will find this book valuable as Spring in Action, 2E will describe ways to use EJB components alongside Spring. Software architects will also find Spring in Action, 2E useful as they assess and apply lightweight techniques prescribed by Spring. and learn how Spring can be applied at the various layers of enterprise applications.

Zend Framework in Action
Zend Framework in Action From rather humble beginnings as the Personal Home Page scripting language, PHP has found its way into almost every server, corporation, and dev shop in the world. On an average day, somewhere between 500,000 and 2 million coders do something in PHP. Even when you use a well-understood language like PHP, building a modern web application requires tools that decrease development time and cost while improving code quality. Frameworks such as Ruby-on-Rails and Django have been getting a lot of attention as a result.

For PHP coders, the Zend Framework offers that same promise without the need to move away from PHP. This powerful collection of components can be used in part or as a whole to speed up the development process. Zend Framework has the backing of Zend Technologies; the driving force behind the PHP programming language in which it is written. The first production release of the Zend Framework became available in July of 2007.

Zend Framework in Action is a comprehensive tutorial that shows how to use the Zend Framework to create web-based applications and web services. This book takes you on an over-the-shoulder tour of the components of the Zend Framework as you build a high quality, real-world web application. This book is organized around the techniques you'll use every day as a web developer "data handling, forms, authentication, and so forth. As you follow the running example, you'll learn to build interactive Ajax-driven features into your application without sacrificing nuts-and-bolts considerations like security and performance.

This book is aimed at the competent PHP developer who wants to master framework-driven web development. Zend Framework in Action goes beyond the docs but still provides quick access to the most common topics encountered in the development of web applications.

Computing in the Middle Ages: A View From the Trenches 1955-1983
Computing in the Middle Ages: A View From the Trenches 1955-1983 Computing in the Middle Ages is designed for the lay reader who wishes to understand some of the background of the computer revolution. It provides an easily understood and amusing account of what took place in computer research between the 1950s and the 1980s. The achievements of those days were later exploited by companies like Apple and Microsoft, which brought personal computers to the consciousness of the general public.During that era ... when both the design of computers and expectations about the ways in which they could be used were undergoing dramatic change ... the author was 'in the trenches' where seminal experiments were taking place, first at MIT and later at other universities and research centers. His unassuming story ... a breezy and irreverent memoir enlivened by amusing anecdotes from his professional and personal experience ... gives a human dimension to the otherwise dry and often obscure process of scientific and engineering innovation. Developments are brought to life and explained in terms that can be understood by anyone. Along the way you'll meet a number of memorable characters who, although often overshadowed in the public mind by entrepreneurs, are widely recognized as pioneers in the field of computer research.

Open Question: My mp3 player appears empty but still has space being occupied & it will not work---please HELP!!?
I was transferring mp3s to my Philips mp3 player yesterday and suddenly in mid-transfer there was an error and I'm guessing that what happened next was this: the file being copied to my player only got half-way through its transfer and left only a fragment on my player's hard drive. As a result, my picky mp3 player would not let me delete the half-sent mp3 from it...the mp3 itself had now taken on an ominous run-of-the-mill "file" icon, like the ones that you see when the computer can't find an application to open the file in question. I exited the mp3 player menu from My Computer & disconnected it, then re-connected it and this time the screen on my player flashed "Wait for USB connection" and then went a sexy purple. The player still showed up in My Computer, but all of the contents were invisible. If I view the player's properties, though, the space occupied by my music is still filled, but I have NO WAY AT ALL of accessing it. I really do not want to purge the hard drive because I don't own most of my music on CD and there are at least 800 songs on my player I don't want to lose. Can anyone make suggestions? Could a computer expert extract my mp3s? Whether I get a solution or not, thank you so much for at least reading this. (more...)

Open Question: What notebook should I buy?
Ok... I'm getting a laptop for college... and I was hoping to spend up to $1500 on a good machine that I can depend on for years. I'm a windows user, but I get frustrated with the general hiccups of my computer and was thinking of switching to Macs. Here's my issue. Looking at what the machine is for the price, the Macbook doesn't have the big specs that a similar PC has at the same price. For instance, it only has 2 GB of RAM and a 120 GB hard drive, whereas a PC notebook at the same price has 4 GB of RAM and a 320 GB hard drive. I know my computer will need to run for long periods of time often with lots of windows open. I'm not a gamer, but I am definetly into music and movies... so my computer must be able to handle lots of downloads and viewing and listening without breaking a sweat. I always seem to have at least five windows open on my current computer, and I'm sure that habit will only get worse. I currently have a Dell desktop PC that runs Vista Home Premium with 2 GB of RAM. It is alright, but the slow start-up time and general lag of downloading and viewing constantly annoy me. I have heard that Macs can run much better than PCs with better specs because it the software and hardware were made to work together, but I;m not sure if it's such a good idea to get a computer that doesn't have really good RAM because it seems like computers become obselete in a few years, and I want this computer to last. So basically I need some experienced or educated opinions in which way I should go, Mac or PC. And if you choose PC, could you also possibly touch on Windows 7 and which brand of notebook PCs are typically the best in dealing with lots of multimedia applications. Oh... I don't think I mentioned this, but since I'm going to college, portability is a MUST! I can't have a notebook with a screen bigger than 16"! Thank you for your helpful advice! (more...)
