HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR PHOTOS

A majority of the Civil War photos come from the original glass plate negatives in the holdings at the Library of Congress. The plates depict the activities both during and immediately following the War (1861-1865). The process of taking photographs during the War was complex and time-consuming. Photographers mixed their own chemicals and prepared their own wet plate glass negatives. The negatives had to be prepared, exposed, and developed within minutes, before the emulsion dried. This was a difficult process to master in a studio setting and even more difficult to work outdoors. Photographers transported their supplies in a wagon, improvised a darkroom, and learned to use their chemicals in both the blistering heat and bitter cold. In the 1880s dry plate negatives were introduced. These glass negatives were commercially available and did not need to be developed immediately after the exposure. (Source: Library of Congress)

Open Question: Comments on my poem, The Underground Railroad?
Tice David's a name, you will now know From Kentucky he tried, to make Ohio With his Master behind, not loosing site Just a river to cross, then hide in the night He then disappeared and no one would tell where He now smelt how sweet, was freedoms night air And from that time, his story was told That somehow he found an underground road And from that day, a phrase formed their plight An Under Ground Railroad, was named for that night These trains had no course or a set track These parcels just knew, what lies to their back Now Levi was penned as the rails President Because 2,000 stayed at his residence They all had some names for who carried the cause But they just really cared, that's just what is was But don't think this train was buried back then All over this world it is born again Wherever it's needed these wheels will still role Some wanted North, and some now want Seoul (more...)

Resolved Question: So what is there to do in London?
I've been to London several times before as I live just north of the capital, only this time I go I want some of your brilliant ideas of what to do there. This friday night, I'm taking my girlfriend to London and she doesn't know it just yet, & as Christmas has just passed we're both pretty skint so I was just interested in hearing some suggestions for what fun and enjoyable things we could do, in London, on a friday night (6pm till early hours) without costing us a penny. Except for the underground rail pass of course. Open to anything really, but please keep suggestions within reason. I'm only 17 and don't quite want to go getting in myself into any trouble now. Thanks everybody. (more...)

Open Question: Does human activity really effect climate change?
The mass panic over green house emissions must be put in perspective. Our atmosphere is made up of Nitrogen 78%, Oxygen 21%, Argon 0.93% and Carbon Dioxide poultry 0.036%. Carbon Dioxide levels have risen by .0072% since 1900. The biggest producers of this gas are natural phenomena. Super volcanoes such as Toba, Yellowstone and Taupo are big offenders. Milos in Greece alone produces 2% of the earths CO2. Water Vapour accounts for 96% of the greenhouse effect without which world temperatures of -18 degrees Celsius would be the norm. There is evidence to support a medieval warm period. Between 1050 & 1400 the temperature was 0.75 degrees C hotter than it is now. Factors such as our distance from the sun and the heat of the sun have far reaching effects on our climate. Australia rates 19th out of 20 of the worlds worst emitters. The top 4 emitters account for 63.8159% our share a meagre 1.4971%. The top 4 worst have not signed the Kyoto Protocol. We are amongst the lowest of per capita emitters (17). Brazil, Indonesia and India are the worst culprits. This is due mainly to tree clearing. According to Dr S Fred Singer former director of the US Satellite service ? There is no dispute at all about the fact that even if punctiliously observed, (the Kyoto Protocol) would have an imperceptible effect on future temperatures?one-twentieth of a degree by 2050.? Climate change is inevitable. We have to manage the situation. A massive storage reservoir exists. Lake Argyle formed where the Ord River enters the Carr-Boyd Ranges just south of Kununurra. Lake Argyle is now the largest fresh water storage in mainland Australia. Its storage capacity is 10,760 million cubic metres of water or about 9 times the water volume of Sydney Harbour. The overflow pours fresh water into the sea. In this state the Ord River is a massive source of water and could be piped to irrigate the whole of North West WA as well as Metropolitan Perth. Coupled with a rail line the whole of this huge state could become the granary of the world. (more...)

Resolved Question: News years eve questions answered?
To try and prevent repetitive questions, here's a list of things you may want to know if travelling to London tonight. Public transport: Tube running normal, and free between 11.45 - 04.30 British rail: Mainly to schedule, but check time tables. Buses: Night buses and the 24 hour services running normal, BUT..there will be a reduced service leaving central london between the hours of 1900 - 03.00, this is due to all the road closures. Mini cabs: Always charge double fare, and whatever else they can get away with....be careful. London taxis (black cabs) from 22.00 hrs, there is an additional £4.00 added to the normal fare, (they are not double, nor have they ever been). But remember, the taxi trade will not be allowed into central london until the police remove the blockades, if you are able, walk out beyond the road closures to obtain one. Bogus mini cabs operate at this time of year, so be vigilant and stay safe. Fireworks: the main show will be next to the London Eye, Belvedere road SE1, opposite waterloo station, vantage points will be limited if you arrive LATE (This place get's rammo) so beware of pick pockets. Alternative vantage points: Temple place, next to the howard hotel, on the north side of the river, it is elevated above ground level, and you can even stand on the giant wall which surrounds the gardens. Waterloo bridge, Westminster bridge (the busiest), and the pedestrian millenium bridge. Have a great time, wrap up warm, and a happy new year to you all. PS: If you have any questions, pleasde post it, and i'll respond. PS: If you have any questions, please post it, and i'll respond. Lucy and the answer, yeah, that's why i posted it in the London category........Doh !! (more...)

Resolved Question: Mid 20s young professional moving to St. Louis - where should I live?
I'm relocating to St. Louis for work - I'll be there for about 7-9 months. I'll be working in the 63147 zip code, which is near the river, in the North East part of St. Louis on Hall St. It appears the rail runs East/West -- I'm thinking of living downtown, would I drive up to work? What areas of downtown should I consider? I'm looking to get that "city life" feel - walk to restaurants, clubs, parks... (more...)
