New Best Friend
New Best Friend A breath of fresh air in a stale genre, Zoe Clarke-Williams's canny look at the catty world of college cliques is the smartest dissection of the complex world of class envy, social acceptance, and the seduction of privilege since Heathers. But this drama plays it for tragedy. Local working-class girl Mia Kirshner is transformed from social outcast to campus Cinderella and adopted into the hedonistic party world of a trio of rich fun-loving sorority princesses (Meredith Monroe, Dominique Swain, and Rachel True), and comes out the other end in a drug-induced coma. Confidently directed and elegantly constructed in puzzle-piece flashbacks, this sensitive, sympathetic, smartly made drama is refreshingly free of glib moralizing, the rare young-adult film that twists the usual clichés and leaves its audience with more questions than answers. The DVD also features an audio commentary track by director Zoe Clarke-Williams. --Sean Axmaker

And Still We Rise: The Trials and Triumphs of Twelve Gifted Inner-City Students
And Still We Rise: The Trials and Triumphs of Twelve Gifted Inner-City Students The typical image of South-Central Los Angeles doesn't lend itself to peaceful and productive high schools. But as Los Angeles Times reporter Miles Corwin chronicles in this troubling yet uplifting book, the ills of the inner city have not completely defeated Toni Little's advanced-placement students at Crenshaw High School, with whom Corwin spent the 1996-1997 academic year as a silent observer. Having grown weary of writing about gang violence, drive-by shootings, and drug arrests, Corwin wanted "to find a way to write about the other children of South-Central, the students who avoid the temptations of the street, who strive for success, who, against all odds, in one of America's most impoverished, crime-ridden neighborhoods, manage to endure, to prevail, to succeed." He also wanted to show "how truly slanted the playing field remains, how inequality is built into a system touted as a meritocracy." Though 98 percent of the students in the gifted program go on to attend college, it takes a near superhuman effort for them to reach graduation day. In And Still We Rise, Corwin details exactly why.

Corwin's poignant portraits of the students and his sensitive evocation of the effort it requires for them to pursue their education are among the many strengths of the book. There's Olivia, the abused former runaway, ward of the county, and gifted student; Sadikifu, the promising Muslim rapper who constantly fights the gritty allure of gang life; and Toya, who lost her own mom to domestic violence and who struggles to balance schoolwork and motherhood. Corwin further explores the intricate intersections of affirmative action, educational expectations, urban neglect, and racism. By turns shocking and inspiring, this is journalistic work that gets to the core of its subject to reveal students who "value education, sacrifice much to further their educations, and overcome many obstacles--including even their own teachers--in order to obtain their educations." It shouldn't be so hard. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Applying Regression and Correlation: A Guide for Students and Researchers
Applying Regression and Correlation: A Guide for Students and Researchers This book takes a fresh look at applying regression analysis in the behavioural sciences by introducing the reader to regression analysis through a simple model building approach.

The authors start with the basics and begin by re-visiting the mean, and the standard deviation, with which most readers will already be familiar, and show that they can be thought of a least squares model. The book then shows that this least squares model is actually a special case of a regression analysis and can be extended to deal with first one, and then more than one independent variable.

Extending the model from the mean to a regression analysis provides a powerful, but simple, way of thinking about what students believe are the more complex aspects of regression analysis.

The authors gradually extend the model to include aspects of regression analysis such as non-linear regression, logistic regression, and moderator and mediator analysis. These approaches are often presented in terms that are too mathematical for non-statistically inclined students to deal with.

Throughout the book maintains a conceptual, non-mathematical focus. Most equations are placed in an appendix, where a detailed explanation is given, to avoid disrupting the flow of the main text.

Indispensable for anyone using regression and correlation from undergraduates doing projects to postgraduate and researchers.

Undergraduate Algebraic Geometry (London Mathematical Society Student Texts)
Undergraduate Algebraic Geometry (London Mathematical Society Student Texts) Algebraic geometry is, essentially, the study of the solution of equations and occupies a central position in pure mathematics. With the minimum of prerequisites, Dr. Reid introduces the reader to the basic concepts of algebraic geometry, including: plane conics, cubics and the group law, affine and projective varieties, and nonsingularity and dimension. He stresses the connections the subject has with commutative algebra as well as its relation to topology, differential geometry, and number theory. The book contains numerous examples and exercises illustrating the theory.

Open Question: Good used small SUVs and Compact Cars?
Okay so I am compiling a list of used older model cars from http://www.vhix.com. Budget will probably be nor more then $10,000. All are at least '03s and cars are sedans. I don't like the idea of people being able to see into my trunk. That's why I'm not completely sold on the idea of a small SUV. I am 25, first time driver and first time college student, so I'm not ready for the mom mini van! lol My specs are 4 doors,Automatic trans, A/C, LATCH, lock and retracting seat belts in at least the back seat, power locks and windows, CD player, shoulder belt for the middle seat in the back. Car must also comfortably seat a Graco Nautilus in the middle seat. Great for a college student, I'll be going to community college that is about 10 miles away, by freeway. I live in the city. I can get to all the surrounding cities with in 15 minutes by freeway, but I prefer the regular roads, as the high speed (70 mph in Michigan) makes me feel uncomfortable. Safe and Easy to drive is what I'm looking for. Cars low on my list is strictly for their MPG or lack there of. 2001-2008 Buick Rendevous Low-Mid on list 2003 Ford Explorer Sport very low on my list, 16 MPG 2004 Kia Sorento last on list 15 MPG 2005 and 2009 Chevy Aveo High on list 25+ MPG 2005-2009 Chevy Cobalt mid list 24-25 MPG 2006-2009 PT Cruiser Mid list 20-21 2006-2009 Kia Spectra Mid-High 25+ MPG 2004-2009 Ford Focus Mid-High 25+ MPG 2006-2009 Kia Rio and Rio5 I still don't know the difference in these to cars! 2004-2005 Toyota Yaris Very High... I have fallen in love with it through the website, I will most definitely be Test Drive List! Saturn Ion, I love the looks of it but can't find any specs on it. Any other cars you may think will be good for me? (more...)

Open Question: Is there a way to win his heart?
I'm a high school junior, intelligent (okay, I'm a nerd), into art and music. He's a senior at the same school; tall, dark, handsome, etc. We have both been on the Speech & Debate team since the beginning of last year, and I've had a crush on him for just about that same amount of time. I've actually dated two other guys since I met this guy, but at least part of the reason I've broken up with them has been because I love this other kid. Late last summer I indirectly told him that I liked him (you know the old middle-school tricks with notes and best friends? Yeah. I am that ridiculous). He called me on the phone and told me things like "You brighten my day" and "it's great when you come visit me at work"... but that he didn't want a relationship. I tried to let it go. We actually became closer friends after that; but it really just made me like him more. Sound like a soap opera? I should sell the rights to this story, because it gets better! He actually started to act different; I could never tell if he was just insanely kind or he was flirting with me, which would be sending a serious mixed message. He did things for me like run back to the bus (the parking lot was a mile away in this instance) to get my sweater. He told me he wanted to be my Debate partner. And every Speech practice, he would call my cell phone to let him in the school doors (practice is after-hours). I asked another boy to winter formal last month; This guy was there, too, of course, and we all danced as high school students do and it was super fun. I told him that I liked him still via an ongoing email message; he told me "I don't think you understand, and I don't really either. We need to talk, in person, if that's ok with you." That was a few weeks ago, and though we've seen each other around school and stuff, we haven't discussed this particular matter. There is a two-day tournament coming up; we two are debate partners, so we'll be spending countless hours together, mostly bored out of our minds waiting for the next round to begin. What should I do? (more...)

Open Question: How long before I see results?
I'm 20 years old, 6'8'' and about 240-50 pounds. I'm in reasonable shape save for being overweight -- I can run at least a mile without stopping (though I don't run regularly) and I mountain bike on the weekends. I'm barely ever sick and I'm not usually tired apart from occasions I don't get enough sleep (I'm a working college student, it goes with the territory), so I'm guessing i'm eating the right foods, probably just a little too much of them (hence the extra weight). However, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to fitness and losing weight by exercising. My question is regarding bicycle riding. I used to ride across my city to high school every day, a ride of about 6 miles. I recently re-rode the route, for old times sake, and found I could still do it without pushing myself too hard. The route consists of hills when leaving or approaching my house, but the city in general is on a downward grade when going away from home to my destination. If I were to start riding this route every day or every other day, which would be a total of about 12 miles (along with eating less), how long would it be before I began to see physical results? Open Question: Toyota Vs. Subaru for a starter car?
I am graduating college student looking to go out on my own for my first car. I have heard from all the grown up that Toyotas or a Subaru would be my best bet. I would like to get the flashy sedan but I want something that would be practical, last, and give me the best dollar for my buck. I keep hearing from all the retired people they have had their Toyota/Subaru's greatly exceeding 200,000 miles with no major problems and great in terms of rust (I live in Buffalo). So i was wondering if there was any truth in their claims and what would be my best starter car as an adult. (more...)

Resolved Question: Can my kids father take custody away from me if I live short-term in motorhome with kids while I go to school?
Ex-hubby was a hustler (legal con artist) who has financially ruined me. I'm in school so I can re-enter workforce and will be finished in April. My financial situation is really bad right now, despite child support, with massive student loans. I have been considering borrowing a motorhome from a family member for myself and my children to live in until I obtain work next summer. I can't afford my rent anymore. I don't drink/smoke/party/have a boyfriend, etc. I have had primary custody since he left three years ago but he's furious about having to pay child support and has told me he is going to petition the court to have the children live with him instead now that he has bought a house. He lives 250 miles away. Would he stand a good chance of getting it? I'm expecting to live in the motorhome only short-term (less than a year). I'm trying really hard to provide stability for my children but being as poor as I am is making it very difficult. (more...)

Open Question: What should I do ?
I'm unemployed, student debts, and a Fast-food interview tomorrow. I've got experience so that helps. But it's in another town and I don't own a car. The shifts are from 4pm to 5am, which means after work I would need to wait 2 hours for trains/buses to start running. It's 4.7 miles away, too far to walk daily. If I take the train to get there, and a taxi to get home, that's $20. At minimum wage, I need to work 3 hours just to break even. I'm losing 27% on transport. When it gets warmer out, I can bike. The fastest route is beside a highway, but I'll manage. But for now it would be very dangerous. Do you think I should still try to get the job? (more...)

Resolved Question: Can I stop payment and return a used car I purchased 6 days ago and it broke down?
I live in Florida bought a 99 Chevy Blazer with 105,xxx miles using my credit card for $3,800. I purchased it "as is" and 6 days later it broke down. I have contacted the dealer and made attempts to fix the vehicle. There was water in the oil and it needs a new head gasket. They gave me a quote saying the repair would cost $1,700 and they would pay half of it. I am a student and I have a one year old son, I do not have $850 to pay for the other half. I am considering returning the vehicle using my mastercard rights and disputing the charge, because I am unsatisfied with the quality of it. The salesman told me it was a good car and it would be great for my family. What are my chances of getting my money back and not getting sued? Will false advertising help? On another note I already contacted the credit card company and they advised me to get documentation that I was leaving the car at the dealership, and they would send me papers to fill out to finish the dispute and it would take up to 15 days to complete. I have not gone through with that yet, but it is going to be my last resort. Do you think they are just going through the process, because I asked or is there a chance they will get my money back? Resolved Question: How can I achieve these goals in '09? (Serious responses plz)?
I hate new years resolutions, so I'm going to refer to it as "short term" goals for 2009. These are a couple of things that I'm looking into: 1. Learn a foreign language (preferably Spanish, German or Japanese) 2. Increasing my sales and productivity at my job 3. Relocate to another city (preferably L.A., Atlanta, Dallas, or Miami) 4. Stop Procrastination 5. Mediate more 6. Build more Muscles 7. Pay off debts Now, most of the responses that i'm probably going to get are no brainers, but let me shed a lil light on my current situation. I'm 28 y.o. and i work part time in retail; i sell wireless service. I'm also a student struggling to finish my final two semesters at a college thats 50 miles away; which i drive to daily. I stay at home with my mom and I find it difficult to concentrate on my studies and all. My wages have been garnished about a month or so ago and due to the collapsing economy my sales aren't the same, thus my pay is severly suffering. I am constantly stressed out by all of this. I have a car note that I'm a month behind in and I'm also helping my mom with bills. I really need help because I'm in over my head, but I really want to succeed and achieve the above goals.
