Seeing Islam as Others Saw It: A Survey and Evaluation of Christian, Jewish and Zoroastrian Writings on Early Islam (Studies in Late Antiquity and Early ... (Studies in Late Antiquity and Early Islam)
This book offers a new approach to the vexing question of how to write the early history of Islam. The first part discusses the nature of the Muslim and non-Muslim source material for the seventh- and eighth-century Middle East and argues that by lessening the divide between these two traditions, which has largely been erected by modern scholarship, we can come to a better appreciation of this crucial period. The second part gives a detailed survey of sources and an analysis of some 120 non-Muslim texts, all of which provide information about the first century and a half of Islam (roughly A.D. 620-780). The third part furnishes examples, according to the approach suggested in the first part and with the material presented in the second part, how one might write the history of this time. The fourth part takes the form of excurses on various topics, such as the process of Islamization, the phenomenon of conversion to Islam, the development of techniques for determining the direction of prayer, and the conquest of Egypt.
Because this work views Islamic history with the aid of non-Muslim texts and assesses the latter in the light of Muslim writings, it will be essential reading for historians of Islam, Christianity, Judaism, or Zoroastrianism--indeed, for all those with an interest in cultures of the eastern Mediterranean in its traditional phase from Late Antiquity to medieval times.

Resolved Question: How Do I know if a company to invest in is a scam or the real deal?
I was thinking of investing in a company with my friend which was doing an IPO ( 25 cents per share ) and they were drilling in the east coast of canada( Vancouver based company ). I met with the president of the company and he pitched his company or whatever and after that I said no. My friend said yes and invested 20 grand. Anyway later on my friend who invested in the company said that the company did well on the drilling.
Now they are doing a secondary offering ( 0.75 per share )and have videos on their website about the company and how well they are doing. They also state to have a 43-101 report thats states a $500m value with less then 15m shares outstanding. and that they have a take out transaction happening very shortly but they wish to remain private as of this moment.
I have trouble trusting people with money so how do I know if this company is the real deal?
does the 43-101 report , evaluation , and take out transaction mean anything ?
will my friend make alot of money or could this all be a lie? like just because the company says they have all this does it mean its true?
all comments would be helpful THANKS !

Voting Question: Do you agree that these four issues should be addressed in the Presidential debates?
"Foreign Policy: The Iraq War must end as quickly as possible with removal of all our soldiers from the region. We must initiate the return of our soldiers from around the world, including Korea, Japan, Europe and the entire Middle East. We must cease the war propaganda, threats of a blockade and plans for attacks on Iran, nor should we re-ignite the cold war with Russia over Georgia. We must be willing to talk to all countries and offer friendship and trade and travel to all who are willing. We must take off the table the threat of a nuclear first strike against all nations.
Privacy: We must protect the privacy and civil liberties of all persons under US jurisdiction. We must repeal or radically change the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act, and the FISA legislation. We must reject the notion and practice of torture, eliminations of habeas corpus, secret tribunals, and secret prisons. We must deny immunity for corporations that spy willingly on the people for the benefit of the government. We must reject the unitary presidency, the illegal use of signing statements and excessive use of executive orders.
The National Debt: We believe that there should be no increase in the national debt. The burden of debt placed on the next generation is unjust and already threatening our economy and the value of our dollar. We must pay our bills as we go along and not unfairly place this burden on a future generation.
The Federal Reserve: We seek a thorough investigation, evaluation and audit of the Federal Reserve System and its cozy relationships with the banking, corporate, and other financial institutions. The arbitrary power to create money and credit out of thin air behind closed doors for the benefit of commercial interests must be ended. There should be no taxpayer bailouts of corporations and no corporate subsidies. Corporations should be aggressively prosecuted for their crimes and frauds.
The two major parties are not addressing these issues because they don't want to disturb special interests. Yet all of the sizable third parties agree that these issues are of paramount importance, regardless of whatever other issues they may disagree on. Ron Paul put this statement of issues together, but Nader, McKinney and Baldwin (as well as Jay of the Boston Tea Party) agree to them.
Why are we rationing debate access so we never get our issues addressed?
Serenely Someone - truly a beautiful thought!

Resolved Question: For the second time, Proof for God?
The Bible claims that it is the inspired and accurate Word of God. Therefore, it is vital that we compare the Scriptural records against the archeological discoveries uncovered at actual sites where many of the thrilling events of the Bible actually occurred. The results of these detailed investigations are available for anyone to examine. The archeological record provides overwhelming confirmation of thousands of detailed statements and facts recorded in the sacred Scriptures. Scholars have not found one single confirmed archeological discovery that absolutely disproves a statement of the Scriptures. To the contrary, as the evidence in The Signature of God reveals, the scholars have discovered literally hundreds of objects, inscriptions, and sites that confirm the accuracy of biblical statements in even unimportant areas. The most important thing for believers in God is that these archeological proofs of scriptural accuracy confirm the accuracy, the inspiration, and the authority of the Word of God. No one should expect that archeology will be able to provide detailed proof of such personal events like the sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham. By their nature, it is unlikely that such events in the lives of private individuals would ever leave any archeological evidence. Most personal events recorded in the Bible would never have left evidence that could be discovered thousands of years later. However, whenever the Bible dealt with the rise and fall of kingdoms, cities, buildings, etc., the spade of the archeologist has been able to discover wonderful confirmation of the truth of Holy Scripture.
Only fifty years ago many disbelieving scholars totally rejected the historical accuracy of the Bible because they claimed that the Scriptures talked about numerous kings and individuals that could not be confirmed from any other historical or archeological records. Recent discoveries, however, have shown that they should not have abandoned their faith in the Word of God so easily. If they had only trusted in the truthfulness of the Bible or waited a little longer they would have been rewarded with the recent archeological discoveries that confirm many biblical details, events, and personalities.
Recent archeological investigations have demolished the position of those who rejected the biblical account of Israel's kings such as King David. In 1993, archeologists digging at Tel Dan in the Galilee in northern Israel found a fragment of a stone inscription that clearly refers to the "house of David"˙and identifies David as the "king of Israel." This is the first inscription outside the Bible that confirms the Bible's statement that David was the king of Israel in the ninth century before Christ. Many Bible critics who had rejected King David as a myth were upset to discover their position could no longer be defended. Some critics suggested that the fragment was a "fake." The following summer, two additional fragments of the original inscription were found that provided scholars with the whole inscription, confirming that it referred to David as king of Israel.
The Walls of Jericho
During excavations of Jericho between 1930 and 1936, Professor John Garstang found one of the most incredible confirmations of the biblical record about the conquest of the Promised Land. The results were so amazing that he took the precaution of preparing a written declaration of the archeological discovery, signed by himself and two other members of his team. "As to the main fact, then, there remains no doubt: the walls fell outwards so completely that the attackers would be able to clamber up and over their ruins into the city." This fact is important because the evidence from all other archeological digs around ancient cities in the Middle East reveal that walls of cities always fall inwards as invading armies push their way into a city. However, in the account in Joshua 6:20, we read, "the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city every man straight ahead, and they took the city."
Dr. Millar Burrows, a professor at Yale University, studied the evidence that indicates the historicity of Abraham and the other patriarchs of Israel as recorded in Genesis. "Everything indicates that here we have an historical individual. As noted above, he is not mentioned in any known archaeological source, but his name appears in Babylonia as a personal name in the very period to which he belongs" (Millar Burrows, What Mean These Stones?, [New York: Meridian Books, 1956], pp. 258-259). Burrows wrote about the underlying reason most scholars reject the authority of the Bible, "The excessive skepticism of many liberal theologians stems not from a careful evaluation of the available data, but from an enormous predisposition against the supernatural. . . . On the whole, however, archaeological work has unquestionably strengthened confidence in the reliability of the scriptural record."
The English scholar, William Ramsay, travel

Resolved Question: Ivy league admissions?
I am going into my senior year at a fairly small, private high school. I got a 32 on the ACT (35 English, 32 Reading, 30 Math, 29 Science), an A grade average GPA, taken as many honors, accelerated, or AP classes available, 150+ service hours, pep club leader, varsity sports captain, summer part-time job, Spanish club, interact (community service), highest honors awards every year, and will receive GREAT evaluations from teachers, college counselor, and principal. I am taking the SAT II Subject tests this October (U.S. History, Math 1, and Spanish) and am expecting to score in the 760-800 range on all of them. I am also taking the SAT Reasoning test in November and expect to get at least a 2200 on that. I plan on majoring in either Economics or Finance and possibly minoring in Philosophy. If it helps at all, I have a family member who has largely donated to and hosted many events at his home for political candidates such as George H.W. Bush and other Virginia politicians. I'm pretty sure I have many connections on the East Coast. I am taking the most rigorous course schedule available at my school my senior year and am also planning on founding an investment club. I am completely enthralled with investment banking and Wall Street and know a few people who work/have worked there. Does anyone have a vague idea of my chances at any of the Ivies, NYU, Northwestern, MIT, Michigan, University of Virginia, Notre Dame, or Georgetown? Also, any ideas on how I can improve my resume during my senior year?
I was planning on majoring in Economics at the schools that do not have an undergrad B-school. Ranto, any insider tips on giving me an edge at Wharton or the others?
Bill, thanks for the advice on the actuarial exam. Is that offered just about anywhere? And would that give me a big edge on the competition?
I am taking two high math classes, will that help with the business schools?

""Since a year, contact with UAE and Middle Eastern firms was established in an attempt to draw their attention to the investment opportunities in Vienna. A successful foundation has been built since then with not only the WWFF making contacts of their own but also the companies themselves making initial contact (i.e Al Fahim Group, to be explained) from their side, a sign of the increasing trend that the WWFF is becoming recognised in the Arab world.
Like in any business, you are never guaranteed success from the contacts you make but it would be wrong to suggest otherwise based from what the WWFF has undergone. To backup this view, two successful trips to the UAE were completed in which two real estate companies, two investment companies and three Islamic Banks all registered genuine interest to invest in Vienna in the forthcoming future.
With the booming real estate market in Austria, the reaction of our Arab real estate partners could not have been any better. The Aspern Airfield Project has attracted most interest to this point. The notion that Islamic Banking in Central Europe is growing can be seen from the fact that our three Islamic banks partners are seeking investment having been convinced from our presentation that took place in the UAE. The two state-owned investment companies are looking at various ways to invest in Vienna, with particular interest on the real estate business and private equity market. Having said that, ADIA - Abu Dhabi?s investment catalyst whom we met - is looking to buy a large stake in the shares of the Mercedes Corporation. To help our potential investors make their final decision to investment, each received a package that reflected the topics and questions they raised during our visit to the Emirates.
Recently, Al Fahim Group ? a family run business in Abu Dhabi ? independently contacted the WWFF inquiring about the cost of the Aspern Airfield Project which is not only positive from the business side, but also, an indication that the WWFF has indeed made an impression in the Arab region, let alone internationally.
The current status is that the WWFF is awaiting responses from its Arab partners as they undergo an evaluation process in regards to its potential future activity in Vienna. A third visit to the UAE and possibly a new venture to another country in the Middle East or the Gulf is being considered by the WWFF.
Other successful WWFF contacts were made in relation to the Hotel Industry. In an effort to promote Vienna as business location in the hotel business, a meeting with a Four Season official was made. Detailed plans of two buildings were given which would provide much value to any Hotel corporation looking for not only expanding but investment too, provided their location (two buildings) in the city centre of Vienna. An official press release indicates that Four Seasons will be existing in Vienna.
To conclude this briefing, the International Wirtschaftsservice at the WWFF has undergone a great deal of effort to take its contacts in another direction, that being the Arab continent. The organisation understands and recognises the need to establish contact with companies who, traditionally, in the monetary sense, seek for stability, long term security, sound business and importantly great value in its investment. The WWFF is hoping to provide the support for these four pillars of Arab investment in Vienna in the near future. ""

Resolved Question: Fundraising ideas... he still needs $70,000?
Alex was born in December, 1988.
He spent the first week of his life in the neonatal intensive care unit at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke?s Hospital in Chicago. After many tests and procedures he was diagnosed with a neurogenic bladder, requiring catherization around the clock for the first 2 ½ years of his life. He continued to have problems and it was apparent that his intestinal motility was not normal. He was properly diagnosed at 3 years of age with chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction. At that time he required his first central line, which was surgically placed into the main artery in his chest. This was done to give him Total Parental Nutrition (TPN) to intravenously sustain his nutrition, calories, and fat to survive. His digestive system could not tolerate and absorb the food he ate by mouth. Alex had a total of 5 central lines placed in his chest from 1991 to 2001.
In July of 2001, Alex saw a new doctor, Dr. Colin Rudolph, in Milwaukee at Children?s Hospital of Wisconsin. Alex was in such poor health and had major central line access site issues. He was literally wasting away.
In August of 2001, at Dr Rudolph?s suggestion, Alex had a jejunostomy tube (J-tube) placed in his jejunum for nocturnal formula feeds and a gastrostomy tube (G-tube) placed in his stomach for drainage. This worked well for Alex, it was a more natural way for his body to digest the formula, and much easier on his liver than the TPN. He was able to maintain his nutrition with just his J tubes and was thrilled to get rid of his central line. This new feeding procedure gave Alex a more normal life as a teenager.
Despite his health issues, and frequent absences from school, Alex was able to play on the Glenn Westlake Middle School 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams. He also made the honor roll. In high school at Glenbard East, he took advanced classes, and continued to play volleyball. During Alex?s junior year the Varsity team took 3rd in the Illinois State Finals, and Alex was an intricate part of the team. Alex graduated from Glenbard East High School in 2007. Currently, he?s a part-time student at the College of DuPage. His career goal is to become a Pharmacist.
Over the past 7 years Alex?s health has been complicated with many procedures and surgeries as a result of adhesions and large bowel volvuli. He?s had approximately 80% of his bowel removed, and was eventually required to have an ileostomy placed in July of 2007. His intestinal motility has worsened and he now requires a groin central line for TPN nutrition. Alex is only able to tolerate limited amounts of oral food at this time.
Through out his life, Alex has had over 17 major surgeries, and way too many hospital stays to count. If not for Dr. Rudolph, and Alex?s team of doctors and nurses at Children?s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, he would not be here today. It was Dr. Rudolph who referred Alex and his family to Children?s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, in November of 2007, for an evaluation of a small bowel transplant. The recommendation was that Alex would benefit from an intestinal transplant. His intestinal failure is irreversible and his central line access sites are extremely limited.
Alex is as active as his body will allow him to be. He deals with what life has dealt him with determination, perseverance, and with what seems like an unending supply of inner strength.
When asked about his life, Alex says: ?It hasn?t always been easy but, I wouldn?t change a thing. This has made me who I am today.?
Alex needs a small bowel transplant that will cost around $500,000!! He has insurance but they dropped him because he used it all from previous surguries. Before the doctors will even touch him he has to pay $100,000 cash. He only has $30,000 so far and still needs $70,000.
