Across The Borders
Across The Borders On this live album, the Battlefield Band is joined by five different guests. Recorded during three concerts at Queen's Hall in Edinburgh, the album features a generous helping of 28 different songs and instrumental dance tunes, but the highlights occur when the guests visit the band on stage. Eric Rigler, a Californian featured on the "Braveheart" soundtrack, plays the smaller, sweeter uillean pipes in harmony and counterpoint with Iain MacDonald's bagpipes on two songs and three tunes. Alison Kinnaird, a frequent collaborator in the past, joins the Battlefield Band again to add her Scottish harp and arrangement to the traditional air, "Tuireadh Iain Ruaidh." Flutist Seamus Tansey adds an Irish flavor on two tunes cowritten with MacDonald. And the Battlefield Band joins Glasgow's Radio Sweethearts for a version of Dave Dudley's truck-driving classic, "Six Days on the Road." --Geoffrey Himes

The Steel Bonnets: The Story of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers
The Steel Bonnets: The Story of the Anglo-Scottish Border Reivers "If Jesus Christ were amongst them, they would deceive him," it was said of the plunders, raiders, and outlaws who terrorized the Anglo-Scottish Border for over 300 years. Theirs is an almost forgotten chapter of British history, preserved largely in folktales and ballads. It is the story of the notorious raiding families--Armstrongs, Elliots, Grahams, Johnstones, Maxwells, Scotts, Kerrs, Nixons, and others--of the outlaw bands and broken men, and the fierce battles of English and Scottish armies across the Marches. The Steel Bonnets tells their true story in its historical context-- how the reivers ran their raids and operated their system of blackmail and terrorism, and how the March Wardens, enforcing the unique Border law, fought the great lawless community. A superb work of scholarship and a spellbinding narrative. George MacDonald Fraser is the celebrated author of the Flashman novels, The Candlemass Road, The Pyrates, and the Private McAuslan stories.

The Reavers
The Reavers

After twelve gloriously scandalous Flashman novels, the incomparable George MacDonald Fraser gives us a totally hilarious tale of derring-do from a different era.

It’s the turn of the seventeenth century (sort of), we’re in the wild Borders of Scotland, and a casket of jewels, an accidental murder, an estate at risk and a plot to overthrow the king are the order of the day. The irresistible and feisty Lady Godiva Dacre and her “chocolate-box pretty” companion Mistress Kylie Delishe find themselves stranded on a desolate road as highway robbers threaten their lives and possessions. Seemingly out of nowhere, the dashing Bonny Gilderoy (think Johnny Depp on a horse) single-handedly defeats the villains, but not before stealing Lady Godiva’s treasured jewels—along with her heart.

After making it safely to their destination, Godiva and Kylie find themselves thrown back together with that charming scoundrel Gilderoy. A mysterious man named Archie Noble comes to their aid and also makes a play for Godiva’s affections. Despite preposterous alliances and uproarious complications of the heart, they must rely on one another as secret identities are revealed and a perilous coup endangers the Scottish throne. It is through equally daring feats of courage and outlandish costumes that our heroes wade through salacious nightlife, confront wizards and witches and endure terrifying and ridiculous odds to preserve national pride and resolve the love triangles that threaten national security.

The Border Hostage
The Border Hostage In The Border Hostage, a titillating combination of historical detail and breathtaking passion, perennial favorite Henley wields her magic yet again, this time setting her tale along the bloody borders of Scotland and England. When high-strung English beauty Raven Carleton runs into Heath Kennedy, the bastard son of a Scottish border lord, trespassing on her family's lands, she's lucky Heath only divests her of her favorite horse and the shirt off her back. But when Raven runs across Heath again while out riding with her betrothed, she doesn't get off so easily. Taken hostage and held for ransom by the rugged Scot, Raven vows to escape as soon as she can. But Raven fails to reckon with her own attraction to the fiendishly handsome Heath. Erotic visions haunt her as Raven attempts to deny her Celtic roots and the images her heritage brings--dreams of passionate embraces shared not with her fiancé, Christopher Dacre, but with the smug Scot Heath whom she cannot abide. Even worse, Heath's knowing grin makes Raven believe he can read her unruly mind. Machinations of the English court and Scottish loyalists threaten not only Heath and Raven's happiness, but their very lives. Those who wait for each new Henley title will not be disappointed. --Alison Trinkle

Resolved Question: Which one of these 13 cryptids are more credible to exist?
Ahool Giant unknown bats are reported to reside in a region of western Java, plus similar reports under different names from Vietnam and the Philippines; possibly known as Orang-bati in Seram, Indonesia. Andean Wolf These unrecognized mountain dogs are seen in South America. Bigfoot The classic Sasquatch of the Pacific Northwest is well-grounded in hundreds of years of sightings, encounters, folklore, traditions, hair samples, and footprint evidence, for starters. The Patterson-Gimlin footage captured images in 1967 of what appears to be a good type specimen of this animal. Caddy These unknown Sea Serpents (perhaps Mystery Cetaceans?) living off the coast of British Columbia are a popular figure in Canadian cryptozoology. Champ Giant prehistoric-looking creatures supposedly lurk in Lake Champlain, a 109 mile lake that borders New York, Vermont, and Ontario. Chupacabras Also called ?Goatsuckers,? these bizarre Caribbean and South American cryptids are five feet tall biped creatures with short grey hair that have spiked hair and reportedly drain the blood through throat punctures of the livestock they kill. Giant Anaconda Reports have been made of 100 feet long snakes on the Rio Negro of the Amazon River basin. Jersey Devil This regionalized name hides these perhaps a variety of creatures that have been haunting the New Jersey Pineland forest for over 260 years. Mokele-Mbembe For over two hundred years there have been reports of living Sauropods (dinosaur) in the remote Congo area of Africa. They may be confused with accounts of other local cryptids, including aquatic rhinos and monitors. Mothman A local name for giant owls (also called Bighoot) which have been sighted for over 100 years in the West Virginia-Ohio area, and elsewhere in North America. Ogopogo This is Canada?s most famous type of water monster, the specific inhabitants of Lake Okanagan in the south central interior of British Columbia. Thunderbird Large condor-like birds, perhaps Teratorns, appear to still roam the skies of North America, along regular migration routes. Loch Ness Monster Nessie is the most famous Lake Monster in the world; they are said to inhabit this loch, an extremely deep Scottish lake. (more...)

Voting Question: Does it depress Canadians that their cultural icons often desert/ leave to go abroad?
It's not that they just leave and then return, but over 90% of the time they leave and never come back. Countless Celebrities, Singers, Directors. I remember James Cameron coming back for the Canadian award show, and saying (nearly exact quote): "Yeah. So Im here. And well, hey, I guess I still have a Canadian passport in my house. So thanks". (has stated many times to be proud to be an American) Same for Jim Carrey (let go of his Canadian citizenship, etc). Sports figures: Lennox Lewis (fights for england, returns with British accent), Owen Hargureaves (last year's interview while in Italy for CL clash :" I just dont feel Canadian". Plays for England, considers himself English). Why is this? In Scotland, people go down south (as often), but yet they are extremely proud of their Scottish heritage. I have often attributed this to their distinct accent (which brings them together). Canadians obviously dont have this. But as a Canadian, i often feel depressed and even ashamed of this. It's as if Canada has become the bitter reject colony of the United States, left outside their borders, wishing they could be let in. :\ (more...)

Voting Question: Should I get a collie?
I'm thinking about adopting a collie (scottish collie, not border), but I'm not sure if I should. I'm concerned about how much exercise they need. I'm a moderately active person, but is that enough? I'm getting lots of information on the web, some say they need only a moderate amount of exercise, other say they need 60-80 minutes! Which one is right? (more...)

Voting Question: Question about my heritage and facial features?
Question about my heritage and facial features? I was wondering if anybody could help me by telling which of my ancestries gave me my certain facial and body features. I am a mix of German, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, English, Scottish, Welsh and French. I have really pale skin, but not really sickly looking. I also have dark brown hair that borders on being black. I also have eyes that are mainly a dark blue with a hint of green. I have what people have called a "patrician nose" (what exactly does that mean?) I am also tall about 5'7. So, could anybody help me with what nationality gave me what? Thanks! (more...)
