HISTORY OF THE PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAPH

Shortly after the invention of photography in 1839, the desire to show overviews of cities and landscapes prompted photographers to create panoramas. Early panoramas were made by placing two or more daguerreotype plates, side-by-side. Daguerreotypes, the first commercially available photographic process, used silver- coated copper plates to produce highly detailed images. The first mass-produced American panoramic camera, the Al-Vista, was introduced in 1898. The following year, Eastman Kodak introduced the #4 Kodak Panoram camera that proved popular with amateur photographers. In 1911 Sears, Roebuck and Co. sold the Conley Panoramic Camera through their catalog. Mass-produced panoramic cameras worked on the swing-lens principle, used roll film, and did not need a tripod. They made small panoramas, measuring no more than twelve inches long with a field of view of almost 180-degrees. The Cirkut camera was patented in 1904. It used large format film ranging in width from 5in. to 16in. and was capable of producing a 360-degree photograph measuring up to 20 feet long. Both the camera and the film rotated on a special tripod during the exposure. Cirkut cameras were used mostly by commercial photographers to capture city views, group portraits, and special events. Survey Of Historic Costume: A History Of Western Dress
Survey Of Historic Costume: A History Of Western Dress In the Preface of the 5th Edition of Survey of Historic Costume, Tortora and Eubank conclude
with the following: In the history of dress at the beginning of the 21st century,
costume might be compared to a constantly moving river. This river divides into many narrower
channels that separate, cross, come together, and separate again, and yet that river
continually moves on. Building on the previous editions, the authors update their analysis
of Western dress to 2008. With each new edition some elements of the title change. And
those changes provide an opportunity to focus on some aspect that adds to the usefulness
of this best seller. Survey of Historic Costume has, from its beginnings, taken seriously the
need to accompany the text with appropriate illustrations and the major change in the 5th
Edition is the move to full color throughout the book to enrich the text and the concepts.
Perfect for anyone interested in historic costume, fashion, textiles, drama, and design, this
beautifully illustrated book is full of interesting facts and commentary.

Unknown Waters: A First-Hand Account of the Historic Under-ice Survey of the Siberian Continental Shelf by USS Queenfish (SSN-651)
Unknown Waters: A First-Hand Account of the Historic Under-ice Survey of the Siberian Continental Shelf by USS Queenfish (SSN-651) This title tells about charting the Siberian continental shelf during the height of the Cold War.This book tells the story of the brave officers and crew of the nuclear submarine USS Queenfish (SSN-651), who made the first survey of the remote and important Arctic Ocean region. The unpredictability of floating sea ice, shallow waters, and possible Soviet discovery, all play a dramatic part in this fascinating 1970 voyage.Covering 3,100 miles over a period of some 20 days at a laborious average speed of 6.5 knots, the attack submarine threaded its way through underwater canyons of ice and rolling seafloor, at one point becoming lodged in an "ice garage." Only cool thinking and skillful maneuvering of the nearly 5,000-ton vessel dislodged it. The second phase of the journey began 240 nautical miles beyond the North Pole with a detailed survey of the Siberian shelf, working back to the Bering Strait through the Laptev, East Siberian, and Chukchi seas. The skipper of the Queenfish had been trained and selected by Admiral Hyman Rickover and, inspired by this polar experience, McLaren became one of the world's foremost Arctic scientists, studying first at Cambridge University, and obtaining his doctorate in polar studies from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Resolved Question: How bad do you think the Racial Divide is in America?
Poll Shows Gap Between Blacks And Whites Over Racial Discrimination WASHINGTON (AP) ? Since the nation's birth, Americans have discussed race and avoided it, organized neighborhoods and political movements around it, and used it to divide and hurt people even as relations have improved dramatically since the days of slavery, Reconstruction and legal segregation. Now, in what could be a historic year for a black presidential candidate, a new Associated Press-Yahoo! News poll, conducted with Stanford University, shows just how wide a gap remains between whites and blacks. It shows that a substantial portion of white Americans still harbor negative feelings toward blacks. It shows that blacks and whites disagree tremendously on how much racial prejudice exists, whose fault it is and how much influence blacks have in politics. One result is that Barack Obama's path to the presidency is steeper than it would be if he were white. Until now, social scientists have not closely examined racial sentiments on a nationwide scale at a moment when race is central to choosing the next president. The poll, which featured a large sample of Americans ? more than 2,200 ? and sophisticated survey techniques rarely used in media surveys, reflected the complexity, change and occasional contradictions of race relations. More whites apply positive attributes to blacks than negative ones, and blacks are even more generous in their descriptions of whites. Racial prejudice is lower among college-educated whites living outside the South. And many whites who think most blacks are somewhat lazy, violent or boastful are willing or even eager to vote for Obama over Republican John McCain, who is white. The poll, however, shows that blacks and whites see racial discrimination in starkly different terms. When asked "how much discrimination against blacks" exists, 10 percent of whites said "a lot" and 45 percent said "some." Among blacks, 57 percent said "a lot" and all but a fraction of the rest said "some." Asked how much of America's existing racial tension is created by blacks, more than one-third of white respondents said "most" or "all," and 9 percent said "not much." Only 3 percent of blacks said "most" or "all," while half said "not much at all." Nearly three-fourths of blacks said white people have too much influence in American politics. Only 12 percent of whites agreed. Almost three times as many blacks as whites said blacks have too little influence. Far more blacks than whites say government officials "usually pay less attention to a request or complaint from a black person than a white person." http://news.yahoo.com/page/election-2008-political-pulse-race-in-america (more...)

Resolved Question: People are not falling for Mccain's " straight talk." What are the republicans gonna do?
Obama hits 50% mark in Gallup poll David Paul Kuhn Tue Sep 2, 6:46 PM ET Barack Obama met the 50 percent threshold for the first time Tuesday in the Gallup daily tracking poll, a symbolic hurdle that until now had eluded the Democratic nominee. The Gallup daily tracking poll has found that since the conclusion of the Democratic convention, Obama has risen 5 percentage points in the polls and now leads John McCain 50 percent to 42 percent. That represents a positive turn for Obama, after a couple of days in which he appeared to have peaked at the 49 percent mark while McCain was showing slight improvements. The survey indicates that Obama?s overall post-Democratic National Convention bounce now appears to be roughly at par with the norm of past conventions. Though smaller than several of the sizable bounces of recent decades, the new polling suggests that perhaps the Democratic convention bounce has yet to subside. While an improvement from 49 percent to 50 percent is statistically insignificant, the 50 percent mark holds significance for a party seeking to win its first majority since 1976, when Jimmy Carter won with 50.1 percent. Polling will likely remain in flux until early next week, after the conclusion of the Republican National Convention. On Saturday, Gallup reported Obama was ahead by 8 percentage points. By Monday, that lead had shrunk to 5 points. Today it returned to 8. Obama and McCain were evenly split at 45 percent prior to the Democratic convention, according to Gallup. Should Obama maintain a 5-point bounce in the polls, that would meet the 5- to 6-point norm earned by a typical party nominee, by Gallup?s measure, since 1964. That also means, however, that Obama?s historic acceptance speech before more than 80,000 people at Invesco Field in Denver Thursday night, a political event seen by about 40 million television viewers, has not vaulted him above the norm of past nominees. But Obama now has his firmest political footing of the campaign, according to the polls. Daily tracking polls by Gallup and Rasmussen Reports demonstrate that Obama has taken his greatest lead since the beginning of the general election in June when Obama clinched the Democratic nomination. Rasmussen also recorded an uptick in Obama?s standing on Tuesday, and he now leads McCain 51 percent to 45 percent. CBS News reported Monday that Obama is ahead in its poll, 48 percent to 40 percent, a 3-point increase in Obama?s standing compared with its poll prior to the Democratic convention (more...)

Resolved Question: Has Senator Obama pulled ahead in the polls?
...and is this a real bounce or just a blip, an anomaly? Gallup Daily tracking reported Friday that Obama holds a 49 percent to 41 percent lead. When the Democratic convention began, the candidates were knotted up at 45. Thursday, Obama had gained 6 points in the polls. Friday's results ? which include three days of phone surveys from Tuesday to Thursday ? show that lead increasing by two more points. That bounce does not include any potential effect of Obama?s much-hyped and widely praised convention speech Thursday night. The Rasmussen Reports daily tracking poll also finds that Obama has taken his greatest lead since July. Rasmussen pegs Obama with 46 percent of the vote to McCain?s 43 percent, a lead that expands to 49 percent to 45 percent when ?leaners? are included. Rasmussen?s latest poll also was conducted too early to show any effect from Obama?s acceptance speech. There were some early indications, though, that Obama?s speech may have enhanced his public appeal. The Democratic polling firm Democracy Corps tracked undecided voters in Nevada as they viewed Obama?s acceptance speech. Follow-up focus groups revealed that one in four so-called swing voters who had been leaning to McCain moved to undecided, and one in four who had been undecided moved to favoring Obama. But the first national surveys following Obama?s speech will not be available until Saturday. For Obama, who came into this convention facing down high expectations, the polling indicates that he has so far slightly bettered the baseline for a convention bounce. ...Gallup?s tracking from Monday to Wednesday, when Obama's 6-point bounce first appeared, indicated that Obama?s gains were largely due to increased favor among conservative Democrats. Those same Democrats are more likely to be onetime Hillary Rodham Clinton supporters. Palin?s status as potentially the first female vice president could draw some Clintonites ? particularly middle-aged or older white women ? away from the Democratic ticket. It remains to be seen if adding Palin to the ticket will have a long-term effect in the polls. Walter Mondale?s choice of Geraldine Ferraro in 1984 may have been historic ? marking the first time a woman ran on the ticket of either major party ? but after a 9-point post-convention bounce, the Democratic ticket went nowhere fast. http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20080829/pl_politico/12986;_ylt=AruOB1Uybupx.WzUo5.xuX2_w5R4 (more...)
