Dumfries, Ayr And South-west Scotland: Macdonald's Tourists' Guide 1925
Dumfries, Ayr And South-west Scotland: Macdonald's Tourists' Guide 1925 Originally published in 1925, this guide uses the routes of the Caledonian and Glasgow & South Western Railway companies as a basis for reaching the sparsely populated districts outwith Dumfries and Ayr. The style is entirely practical, and remarkably informative. Every opportunity is taken to refer to associations with Robert Burns, whose poetry immortalises many of the villages and towns featured. By the time of publication, the British railways had been brought into four groups, after the ravages of the Great War. However, what was to prove a more substantial threat to their dominance of the travel and tourist market had already arrived - chars-a-banc and motor 'buses provided the "favourite excursions".

Resolved Question: How can I tell my Dad I love him?
My Dad is getting on but im soft and he is hard. We have never expressed our feelings ever even when my mum died in 1992. He is kind of old fashioned his dad was a shepherd in SW Scotland, Arran, Patna, Thornhill and Dumfries - my grandpa .He was an apprentice jockey Sandy Barclay SNR in Ayr, Scotland before being in the Royal Marines for 23 Years but we have just found out he is dying. I know this question might sound from me a bit impersonal and my da would be mortified but i would really like to know your thoughts. (more...)

Resolved Question: Is this why Scotland is such a proud nation?
The average Englishman, in the home he calls his castle, slips into his national costume- a shabby raincoat, patented by chemist Charles Macintosh from Glasgow, Scotland. En route to his office he drives along a lane surfaced by John Macadam of ayr, Scotland. His car is fitted with tyres, invented by John Boyd Dunlop of Dreghorn Scotland. At his office mail bearing adhesive stamps invented by James Chalmers of Dundee Scotland. The office telephone invented by Alexander Graham Bell of Edinburgh Scotland. At home stands a bicycle, invented by Kirkpatrick Macmillan, a blacksmith of Dumfries, Scotland. At home is a TV, an invention of John Logie Baird of Helensburgh, Scotland, and hears an item about the US Navy, founded by John Paul Jones of Kirkbean, Scotland. He picks up the Bible, only to find that the first man mentioned in the good book is a Scot- King James VI who authorised it`s translation. Continued on next posting. (more...)
